#7days7books Day 2

This is a raw, visceral book that left a deep impression on me. The scenes are still so vivid in my mind. And my brother and my husband felt the same way about this book, so we also have a shared language and experience around it.

@Ruthiella @BarbaraBB

Ruthiella Oof. I *have* to read this for The Super Rooster but am dragging my feet .😬 I don‘t want to go there...that bleak dystopia. 4y
thebluestocking @Ruthiella It is rather bleak but, for me, it had hopeful moments too. I‘m so excited for the #supertob! I still need to read Wolf Hall, A Visit from the Goon Squad, The Accidental, and The Sellout. 💙 4y
BarbaraBB Hi Jessica, just checking in! Hope all is well 💚 4y
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB Hi, Barbara. Thanks for checking in. Things are going okay. I‘m just distracted and not reading much. I hope you‘re doing well too. 💙 4y

#TOB2020

The finals! I‘m not sure if anything anymore in this tournament but let‘s say I hope Normal People will take away the Rooster!

rockpools Hm. I hadn‘t heard of Optic Nerve til your last ToB post. Have you read it? 4y
BarbaraBB @RachelO Yes and the concept is great but I didn‘t enjoy what it led to. 4y
Cinfhen What a weird tournament! I just downloaded the audiobook for 4y

merelybookish Surprised by Optic Nerve but I wanted Normal People to win from the start! 4y
Redwritinghood I‘d be happy with either one of these winning. 4y
BarbaraBB So we have our winner. Normal People won the tournament. I am looking forward to ‘normal‘! (edited) 4y
AceOnRoam I'm glad that Optic Nerve didn't win, I couldn't finish it, I didn't enjoy it at all! 4y
thebluestocking I‘m glad Normal People took it over Optic Nerve, but I was really hoping Lost Children Archive would take it. 💙 4y
thebluestocking Also, can‘t wait for #superToB!! 4y
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking I was voting for Lost Children Archive too. When does the #superToB start? 4y
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB I think they said October for #superToB. Plus #campToB this summer. 🎉 4y
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking O, it‘s after camp! Something to look forward to 💚 4y

#bookreport
I finished four books this week, plus a great Audible original. Book 1 was for #tob20; book 2 was an impulse library read; book 3 is for the #supertob; and book 4 was announced as the 2020 #Newbery winner this week.

#weeklyforecast
I FINALLY started The Testament my last #ToB book, and I started Invested on audio this morning. I want to continue reading down my #BotM pile, so I hope to get to A Woman is No Man this week.

Cinfhen Wow!!!! Congrats on tackling the #ToB20 list 🙌🏻💕🎉 what‘s the #SuperToB???? (edited) 4y
thebluestocking Once this year‘s #tob winner is crowned, there will be 16 total winners. So there is talk about doing a whole tournament with the winners! 💙 4y

Mehso-so

In this book, a young, orphaned slave recounts his time at the side of American vigilante-abolitionist John Brown. For some reason, the young narrator pretends to be a girl throughout. The tone, especially with the narration on the audiobook, is a bit of a farce on the stereotype of the black slave. It also calls into question how history is told: was John Brown a genuine fighter for human dignity and justice or was he a maniacal terrorist? 👇🏻

Redwritinghood Many other famous abolitionists in history also come out looking a little tarnished here. While there is a lot to commend the messages in the book, it did go on a bit long, though, and I got tired of the book. Had it not been an audiobook, I may have bailed on it. 3⭐️ 4y
ljuliel I think John Brown was a character that some people worshipped and others hated. I also don‘t like it when narrators try doing a different voice and they‘re not good at it. There are a few really talented ones that can pull it off, but not many. I‘m not sure what‘s the most irritating : a man with a deep voice trying to sound like a female , or a female trying to lower her voice like a man‘s. 4y
Redwritinghood @ljuliel The narrator was really good, I just think it was trying to be the stereotypical voice. 4y

Suet624 Have you ever read Cloudsplitter? It‘s a long one but really informative about John Brown and the work that he did. I found it fascinating. 4y
Redwritinghood @Suet624 I haven‘t read that. Will have to check it out. In this book, though, I think he was trying to show how history often only shows one aspect of a figure. His portrayal of Frederick Douglass here was also not as shining as history has often shown it to be. 4y
thebluestocking Check one off of the #supertob list! I read this back the year it won the Tournament and really enjoyed the questions it asked about history and the audio narration. I agree that I could‘ve been shorter though. 💙 (edited) 4y
