Wow what a great memoir. Thought provoking, honest, raw, sad, heartwarming and inspiring. This book is soooo many things but boring is definitely not one of them. So glad I finally read it, it had been on my tbr for quite a while and now it will stay in my mind and with me forever. I was excited to discover that Westover learned the word “frivolous” the same way I did. As an educator, I think this book should be opening up discussions about how we teach kids. I‘m not suggesting we do what her parents did, but this woman has a PhD from Cambridge with no formal schooling before age 17. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics No further proof than this story (which is more common than many believe) is needed to prove that all the testing and early academics are ridiculous and useless. If you still can‘t see that after reading this book, either put down the koolaid or get some new campaign donors, and read it again. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 4y

GingerAntics My only real complaint with this book is that when she was talking about her sadistic brother calling her the n-word, she used it probably 20-30 times for no good reason. It seemed to be for shock value. About half way through, I couldn‘t help thinking “we get the point. Stop.” For someone who supposedly knows now why that‘s not an appropriate word for a white person to use, she sure did use it A LOT. 4y
