Cinfhen I LOVED it @Kalalalatja @Reviewsbylola but I‘ve also been to Masada where the story is set, so it was extra captivating for me!!!! Alice Hoffman did an amazing job on all the research, history, details, descriptions ~ really breathtaking!!!! 6y

DefLeppard @MaGoose I feel your pain. I am a quick reader and also an insomniac but still I cannot get through as many books as I would like. Plus it doesn't help I have soooo many books looking at me with disdain mentally shouting "pick me next." ?? 6y

The Red Garden | Alice Hoffman

Less a novel than it is a collection of interrelated short stories all taking place over almost 250 years in one small town in the Berkshires. This is the second Hoffman book I‘ve read in this style and I quite enjoy it because she does it so well. The book served as nice palate cleanser as well after the intensity of Killers of the Flower Moon.

It's a fact that Alice Hoffman never disappoints. While this #middlegrade tale about a 12yo girl called Twig & her life in a small town in Massachusetts isn't necessarily her strongest showing (my favorite #teamAlice #childrenslit remains the Green Heart duology), I can't deny what a lovely little book it is. Charming & beautifully written, full of the lovely prose you expect from Hoffman. Will definitely recommend to students.

JillR Do you think this would be suitable for a 10 year old? (Sorry I'm UK so always get confused about middle grade age range 😳) Amazon says 12 and up but I often find their age recommendations way off... 7y

lauren.lerner I think it's absolutely appropriate for a 10yo, @JillR! I actually think it could be appropriate for 9yo and up, 8yo if it's a precocious reader (like I was and some of my students are.) 7y

From then on, I didn't cry when I was disappointed. I just stored up my hurts, as if they were a tower made of fallen stars, invisible to most people, but burning brightly inside of me.
