Alice Hoffman does it agin! This haunting and tender love story showcases Hoffman‘s talents at their best. The story is unusual but based on true events. An incredible and engrossing read.

I keep trying to like Hoffman‘s writing more, but I‘m just not a fan of the structure here and the switching perspectives from two first person POVs to third person... And the characters themselves aren‘t very realistic to me... the historical setting is interesting but the sideshow/human oddities didn‘t feel all that fresh... but the audio is performed well and I enjoyed it for some fun #AudioColoring!

I am a sucker for any kind of circus/carnival/side show type story but throw in #mermaids and I‘m in heaven! Shocked to see this book got crappy reviews on Litsy- I really enjoyed this one and gave it 4 ⭐️. However, seeing as how I live in a mermaid house, I may be a little biased lol 🤷‍♀️

#firstsnowonbrooklyn made me homesick. Images of my High School- (FK Lane HS)3 halls in Brooklyn, One in Queens. Cypress Hills Cemetery has an entrance in Brooklyn and Queens, surrounded two sides of my HS and is where Harry Houdini is buried. #winterwonderland

After reading The Dovekeepers I had high hopes for this book yet I‘ve been left feeling somewhat disappointed. The writing is really nice but I feel the story is rather thin: each chapter is so long yet so little seems to happen. The historical side of this book - based on fact - is quite interesting but I couldn‘t buy into the mystical element of the story, it simply wasn‘t to my taste. ⭐️⭐️

Continuing with these two today - one for my commute to and from work and the other for the quiet parts of the day.

Next up, I purchased this book over a year ago. Time it was read 📚

Finished my first audiobook. I really enjoyed this story. Loved the characters and the writing. Alice Hoffman has never let me down.

Road tripping home with my kiddos in t-30 minutes for Thanksgiving weekend at my parents. They get the DVD player so I am going to audio drive with This one.

My 1st Hoffman book & certainly will not be my last one! Albeit a slow burn story, I enjoyed this book immensely:

✔ Beautiful & lustrous prose
✔ Character driven story
✔ Circus/oddities themed story with great descriptive writing
✔ Quotable book

❌ Good but not great plot
❌ Italic font used for 1st person narration is harsh for the eyes!

I read it in two days, so hopefully my slump has ended! I really enjoyed this book. It's my first Hoffman, but not my last. I've always been drawn to characters that are outcasts. I found the writing atmospheric. It will be on its way to you soon @SkeletonKey .

I listened to the audio and there are three narrators: Coralie, Eddie, and a generic narrator (voiced by Judith Light). Of the story itself, only Coralie‘s story interested me. (Which is why I have said next to nothing about Eddie in my summary, as I can‘t tell you much more, as my mind wandered during his parts.) Cont in comments...

Interesting but lacked detail overall.

May stats. 5 books. 3 were book club books. I enjoyed them all with a few notable problems in The Loch and All Our Wrong Todays. All in all, a good reading month.

Starting the #8intwo #readathon at LaVeggio with a tasty mocha. #bookandcoffee

For this weekend‘s #8intwo #readathon I‘ll be reading this book for Thursday‘s Books and Beans Book Club (we meet in a different coffee shop near Binghamton NY each month).

This book is worth reading but very slow moving. I also didn‘t like how every other chapter was in italics. It took me out of the story. Still, lots to learn here about the history of New York in 1911. 3.5 ⭐️

I'm sort of mirroring my #FreakyFriday twin. @Penguininflight has injured her back and is laid up. I've been sick all week with bronchitis. ?

While Bev is busy Litsy-ing, I'm not able to focus, so not much reading for me, and no Litsy. (At least I didn't suffer on Tuesday while you all were having Litsy withdrawals.)

Anyway, finished "The Museum of Extraordinary Things" early in the week and enjoyed it immensely.
