Mine is an #unpopularopinion, but I was bored to tears through most of this. I‘m sure the audiobook narrator didn‘t help, but there are nonfiction authors whose writing is more compelling, IMO. It wasn‘t until the last visit to the Hawaiian islands and Cook‘s death that things got interesting. I struggled to convince myself to pick it up, as evidenced by the fact that I finished with only 2 hours left on my Libby check out.

Of the ones I‘ve read I only feel like The Warmth of Other Suns belongs on the list.

#unpopularopinion #100bestbooksofthe21stcentury

BkClubCare Warmth is the only of these I need to read. Gave the other four all 5 stars. Gilead would be my fave of the 52 I‘ve read. 3d
PaperbackPirate 52! Wow! 👏 Thank you for the recommendation @BkClubCare ! 3d
BkClubCare @PaperbackPirate - well, if you didn‘t love Olive Kittridge, we might not have similar tastes. And that‘s okay 👌 2d

I liked Six-Thirty, but the rest of this book was a hard pass for me. #UnpopularOpinion but I found this to be a condescending, preachy, emotionally manipulative, white-feminist fantasy. It beats you over the head with how horrible structural misogyny is, yet can be overcome if you are good enough and smart enough. I never connected to the Zott/Evans romance, a couple odd food-shame-y moments, and anachronisms. Finished just to complain about it.

Karisimo Totally agree!!! 4d

Pickpick

Finished this on the treadmill this morning, and like others by Egan that I‘ve read, it almost worked for me, but not quite. Maybe it would have been better in print, or maybe I‘m just not rock‘n‘roll enough for it. Low pick for me. #unpopularOpinion

I can‘t put my finger on what annoyed me so much about this one that I can‘t even make it a soft pick. We get Ned, Bess, George, and lots more Carson Drew, but this one was even more predictable than usual and I just wanted to shake Carol the entire time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #nancydrewbr

Librarybelle I plan to start this one later this week! 2w

I know this is a beloved book and, frankly, I‘m perplexed. I found the depiction of the main character to be wildly inconsistent and far younger than his stated age. Also, everything a teen might struggle with was depicted, but not in any detail, almost like a checklist. I do think the afterword/thinly veiled author‘s note is really worthwhile, which saves this from being a pan. #unpopularopinion

BarbaraBB Some books are better left unread 😀 3w
Ruthiella I also read this as an adult and was disappointed. Maybe it‘s best read as a teen or young adult. 3w

CarolynM For me, this is a rare example of the film being better than the book. 3w
Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella I was thinking that, too. 3w
Hooked_on_books @CarolynM I completely agree! The only other I can think of is The Silence of the Lambs. Great movie, super weird book. 3w

This seems to be an #unpopularopinion, but this didn‘t do it for me. This is another character-driven book where not much happens. It‘s just a bunch of privileged or bohemian people doing a lot of drugs and having a lot of sex. I need plot! Or some semblance of a plot. I would‘ve bailed but was reading this for #pop24, a book about a 24 year-old. I‘m just glad it‘s over.

#unpopularopinion here, but I was mostly bored with this. I appreciate that Hughes puts the reader in the mind of a serial killer, how she made the LA fog feel like a character, and this definitely had strong noir vibes. And the writing itself is fine. It just seemed like the whole book was the MC was driving around, eating, drinking, and obsessing over his bombshell neighbor. The killings were in the periphery-just not a lot of action.

Bailedbailed

#unpopularopinion A lot of people seemed to enjoy this book, but I'm bailing after 75 pages, past my usual 50 page make or break point. I don't like any of the characters and it's just not keeping my attention.

JamieArc Perhaps the audio version makes it better. It was excellently done, with a full cast. 2mo
RamsFan1963 @JamieArc I have heard that the audio is very good. Maybe when I finish my current audio book I'll see if it's available on audio at Libby or Spotify. 2mo
