Fairy Tale | Stephen King

#UnpopularOpinion

I didn't really like it. I might have bailed after the first third, but it was a #buddyread.

Anyway, I think the first third is good, and the Fairy Tale part was predictable. A YA novel with a bit of an edge. 😬

PS: story does not contain a black cat, but #ShadowCat thinks it should have. 😉🐈

julesG Getting rid of the baddie felt anticlimactic, very deus-ex-machina. 3d
squirrelbrain I already said to @TrishB that I preferred the first part, before the ‘fairy tale‘ kicked in…. Haven‘t finished yet though! 3d

sarahbarnes Omg this cat is beautiful! 😻 3d
TrishB Well you finished 😁 3d
Caroline2 Yeah I nearly bailed too. I just couldn‘t get into the fairy tale world at all. 🤷‍♀️ 2d
Kangaj1 I absolutely loved the book, and your cat is gorgeous! 2d
Balibee146 Love your cat one of mine looks very similar. I'm just about to read the last chapter and have really enjoyed it 2d
julesG @RaeLovesToRead @Graywacke @sarahbarnes @Kangaj1 @Balibee146 Thanks. I think #ShadowCat just grew half an inch from all that praise and love. He's a very introverted cat and camera shy. 2d

I'm Glad My Mom Died | Jennette McCurdy

#unpopularopinion time! This did not work for me. I appreciate that McCurdy has been through a lot but I agree with @jdiehr that it would‘ve been a stronger, more interesting book for me in 20 years. At times, it read like lists of things that happened without the greater context and more nuanced reflection that comes with age. The #audiobook narration sounded detached and flat to me, which didn‘t help either.

An #unpopularopinion here, but this was disappointing for me. I‘ve loved other books by this author, but I just did not connect with either of the MCs, and I thought their relationship was more dysfunctional than anything else. The back-and-forth between Sam and Sadie was tedious and exhausting.

Likely an #unpopularopinion but while I found this debut to be readable & more entertaining than not, I didn‘t love it. The writing is solid, setting fantastic, as is everything we learn about Ojibwe culture, it has a strong female lead, & the story is timely, but there‘s little mystery, narrative threads with no real conclusion, & a scene incorporated so inelegantly & unnecessarily it completely derails the story. A great book with more editing.

About to bail on this one. Boring and I don‘t think I have it in me to hang in long enough to finally get to the point of it all. Really wanted to like this one, but stealing slips of paper and letters containing others‘ work and calling it your dictionary isn‘t doing it for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ #unpopularopinion #literarycrew

Ann_Reads Oh, that's too bad the novel didn't click with you. I can understand your pov. I listened to it on audio, so I think that helped me connect with the main character more. 3w
LapReader I‘m find it dull too. 3w

jlhammar Wrong Place is more thrilling than spooky/scary, but a fun read. I did print, not audio. Haven‘t read the other yet. 1mo
julesG Women in the Library was more cozy mystery for me than spooky. 1mo
IndoorDame @jlhammar @julesG Thanks so much!!! Sounds like I should wait more patiently for my library holds, and find some properly spooky October reads. 1mo

julesG Have you read any of Grady Hendrix's recent books? Or 1mo
IndoorDame @julesG I haven‘t read that one, even though it gets such great reviews, cause I‘ve never liked a Grady Hendrix book I‘ve read. I know writer‘s styles change over time, but I think I just have an #unpopularopinion on this author. 1mo
julesG The Only Good Indians is by Stephen Graham Jones. So not Hendrix. Maybe read a few reviews? It's definitely spooky. 1mo
IndoorDame @julesG okay, thanks! I‘ll definitely look that one up! 1mo
jlhammar Have you tried Wendy Webb yet? I enjoyed this one on audio 1mo
jlhammar This was a pretty good, spooky listen (though I heard there are actual creepy drawings in the print version) 1mo
jlhammar I also enjoyed this one on audio 1mo
jlhammar I thought this one was fun and kind of spooky. I did print though so not sure how the audio would be. 1mo
IndoorDame @jlhammar 🤩 this is such an awesome list, thank you!!! 1mo

#unpopularopinion I didn‘t love this. I didn‘t connect to Craigie or his coworkers and I did not care for the resolution. I loved the audiobook narrator‘s voice, but this may be something that works better in print. I may also just need a break from crime procedurals. Reading the McIlvanney Longlist is draining. 😂

This book has received so much praise and I can understand because there's a lot about it that I truly loved. However, about midway through I just got a little tired of "the strings" and wished the author had chosen something a little more substantial to be in the box.

I loved the premise though and the exploration of prejudices that arise when the boxes are discovered.

This read like The Name of the Wind with a South Asian twist. That might not be bad. Yet, my tastes have changed since I first read TNOTW. Lots of people will love this epic high fantasy, but the voluble prose couldn't hold my attention. I DNF'd at 28%.
