Plowing through and finally getting to the good stuff! I have read this book so, so many times and I'm hoping I enjoy the ride this time, too! #JulyTradition #TheBoyWhoLived

TheAromaofBooks For some reason a lot of people seem to associate this series with Christmas (I guess because they always play the movies at Christmas time??) but for me it's totally a summer thing because I always read them in July as well!!! 3y
Andrea313 @TheAromaofBooks Yes! The release of books 2-7 were all in July, and I would read and re-read them ad nauseam throughout the entire rest of the summer. And while I'd also read them the rest of the year, the strongest memories I have are of late summer nights and days on the beach with each of these. ❤️☀️ 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I didn't start reading them until the 5th book came out. I was housesitting for friends who lived near a huge metropolitan library and I went back almost every day that week to get the next book & spent most of my time on their screened-in back porch with their snoozing dog. Housesat for them the next few summers & reread the series + the new book each time. I love when certain books bring back specific reading memories!! 3y

I love a rainy Sunday for reading all day long! Today I move onto Book 3 and finally start getting into the heart of the story. I'm still feeling ambivalent about finishing all seven books, but then, Books 1 and 2 are my least favorite; it's likely I'll pick up steam here. Either way, I'm pressing on for now into what has historically been one of my favorites in the series. #JulyTradition #TheBoyWhoLived

BookishMarginalia What a pretty edition! 3y

Returning to a series that once meant so much brings out a lot of emotion- especially now, when my feelings about the author have been incredibly negative. I'm not quite sure how to re-engage and I find myself scrutinizing the text for anything reductive or harmful instead of losing myself in the story. Littens, how do you approach problematic faves? Is there any point in returning? Anyway, here goes Book 2; onward! #JulyTradition #TheBoyWhoLived

BookishMarginalia I agree. I still love Harry Potter, but I am over JKR and her anti-trans views. It‘s a shame, really, that she has doubled-down on her pseudoscience bs… in my mind, I have totally divorced the Harry Potter series from its author. It helps that the series is complete; I wouldn‘t be able to do that with an ongoing series, such as the Cormorant Striker mysteries. 3y
Andrea313 @BookishMarginalia I hope to get to the space where I can divorce the work from it's creator! I'm hoping that's what happens on this re-read: that somehow I can recapture some spark of excitement, nostalgia, anything! I seem able to look beyond the creators in some areas (Midnight in Paris is one of my favorite movies though I loathe Woody Allen) but have struggled to get there with JKR. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts! 3y
janeycanuck You might consider checking out the Witch, Please podcast - specifically, this second time through the series. I have very similar feelings to you and I‘m really enjoying their highly critical lens and analysis. 3y
janeycanuck @BookishMarginalia Same. No new JK for me but I think HP has really been taken over by the fandom and that makes it much easier to separate her out. 3y
Andrea313 @janeycanuck Thanks for that tip! I will absolutely tune in and take a listen. 3y

I used to read this series every July, but I haven't for several years. The author's transphobia really upsets me and I"ve had no desire to re-visit her world, to be excited about a story that preaches inclusivity and love while the author uses her platform to harm marginalized people. But I want to reclaim these books, for my own memories and for what the story has meant to me. We'll see how far I get; here we go! #TheBoyWhoLived #JulyTradition

bookishbitch It is rather bizarre isn't it? That the story is about love and empathy and yet the author lacks it so completely in real life. It is so upsetting. 3y
Andrea313 @bookishbitch The disconnect is astounding to me. 3y
bookishbitch @Andrea313 It really is astounding! 3y
WomanistBibliophile The story is about courage. Which JKR has. She hasn‘t used her platform to harm anyone, she‘s spoken out in defence of people‘s freedoms and women‘s rights 3y

I love the way the Audible covers of HP #conflate some of the story's iconic images. If they made physical copies with these covers, I'd have to buy yet another full series! #BeautifulWords #theboywholived

Catherine_Willoughby Its happening with other books too. Annoying as some are better or worse than paperback/hardback editions out there (especially a book printed a few time over multiple of publish houses) 4y
