night_shift @moranadatter I feel you. Anyone posting anything even remotely positive is getting SO much heat on Goodreads. I just feel like I can't automatically one star a book if I haven't read it. And if it doesn't sound up my alley.. I just won't read it or rate it. Can't judge a book by its cover or other people's auto-one-star reviews. 7y

moranadatter @UnidragonFrag The whole thing feels toxic. People posting negative reviews got backlash too. I picked up the book because two people I trust liked it and, looking at the negative reviews, most are people who haven't read the book just pointing to two actual reviews. One of the two negative reviews looks to me like a deliberate misrepresentation of the book's content. Maybe it's not and the book is what people say, but I'm going to read it myself. 7y

night_shift @moranadatter I agree, it totally does, unfortunately. I feel so bad for the author getting all this heat on her debut book! A lady whose reviews 9x outta 10 I agree with liked this book, so I'm going off of that. It feels like a lot of the negative reviews are people hating just to hate. I'm going to post a review no matter how I ending up feeling about it. 7y

night_shift @moranadatter also, it seems people are crying racism when all the races in the book are fabricated races and even still.. aren't books supposed to challenge you? And isn't the point that the main character, who grew up prejudice like a lot of people IRL do, meeting other folks and growing beyond that? Main characters don't have to be perfect.. that's boring. I dunno.. there IS so much toxicity around it :/ 7y

moranadatter @UnidragonFrag I've definitely seen cases where a fictional race is coded as a marginalized group - the goblins in Harry Potter are one example - so I'll be watching for that as I read. 7y
