2½✨

Teen drama and turmoil at full throttle

The way this story was told from three different perspectives—first, second, and third person—really threw off the flow. It felt like I had to reset my brain with every chapter.

Texreader Oooh hard read. I was excited at first to see a book starting with #letterX but that would too much resetting of the brain 2w
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Texreader It's only 250 pages, but it feels like 500 with all the switching. X really is a hard letter. 2w
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! 2w

Sace Originally I was going to read Xibalba in Spanish, but time is ticking and I think I need to find something a little quicker. 1mo

I heard a lot about this writer and book since I live in Japan. I didn't expect much. Not only did it surpass my expectation but I have to admin that it might be one of the most compelling detective stories I have ever read. It's great when the “classic“ lives up to it's reputation. Highly recommended, check out our discussion the podcast: https://bit.ly/45f499C

KathyWheeler I‘ve heard so many good things about this that I bought it. I haven‘t read it yet and need to find it so I can do so. 1y
mindduckbooks @KathyWheeler hope you won't be disappointed, I went in with zero expectations as almost never read detective stories :D 1y

I was really enjoying this book but then there we two plot twists in the last 40 pages that felt forced. It felt like the author wanted to say a lot of things in very few pages. Not a bad read, just not a great one. Definitely a fast, easy read for #litsyatoz #x and my #doublespin book

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y

This is the first Wright novel that I have read & I was admittedly a bit apprehensive of this unpublished novel. My reservations were due to the fact that the plot made me think of Ellison's picaresque of Black identity Invisible Man & I am always a bit leery of unpublished works by acknowledged masters. Although I don't have another Wright to compare this to, I found it to be an effective, surreal & memorable journey through America that👇

vivastory exceeded my expectations. Fred Daniels is picked up by police shortly after leaving for work & questioned. The interrogation quickly turns violent as they accuse him of a double murder. Shortly after signing a false confession he escapes into the sewers where he undergoes a metaphysical journey that is transformative for him. Having only existed in truncated versions, the publication of Wright's novel should be celebrated as one of '21 pub events 5y
vivastory Sidenote: Wright's novel was pub the same day as the Chauvin verdict, Fitting. Wright's daughter on CBS speaks about book:

Completed: #2019 #LitsyAtoZ #ReadingChallenge

I completed the required track (title) but missed the optional challenge (all women authors) by 1 book. Shoulda stuck with my original plan to read Grafton's X for #X ... oh well, there's always next time.

@BookishMarginalia

BookishMarginalia You did great! 6y
