His Only Wife | Peace Adzo Medie

Pickpick

I was intrigued by the premise and opening line of this book. “Elikem married me in absentia; he did not come to our wedding.” While I didn‘t get a cat fight between wife vs mistress, I did get a good feel for the vastly different lifestyles of the little village of Ho and the bustling capital city of Accra, both in modern day Ghana. (To be fair, the mistress was there first and Eli DIDN‘T attend his wedding to Afi.) Afi is a 21-year old ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick seamstress who has been arranged to marry Eli, the favorite son of her & her mother‘s benefactor, Aunty Ganyo. Eli already has a girlfriend & daughter, but Afi is swayed by the Ganyo family‘s reports of her being ugly, cold, crazy, and not suitable. Afi is young and poor, so she faces a culture shock when she gets to Accra and placed is in a fancy apartment with nothing much to fill her days and an allowance to spend on anything she wants. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick When WILL Eli come to her?I don‘t agree with some of Afi‘s actions and feelings regarding her marriage and her place in Accra, but those are opinions from a middle-class, North American white lady twenty years her senior. The story kept me reading, wanting to know how it all played out, how Afi‘s life turns out? The book reads a bit like the autobiography of a fictional character, but the depictions of Ghana were my favorite part of this. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The book coupled with a few quick internet searches make me feel like I have a good idea of the world Afi lives in. The customs and actions of some of the people we meet - Eli with his polygamous relationships, Uncle Pious & his AUDACITY, and even Aunty Ganyo, the fickle mother-in-law with money to throw around. It‘s good to know that even in Ghana, money makes the world go round.
@TheAromaofBooks this was my January #Bookspin book

Completely delightful! As you might expect from a story of two Lexicographers, it is VERY wordy but just so much fun! It‘s erudite, yet silly... full of hilarious observations, clever wordplay, and charming characters. Full of fascinating etymology, I was imagining Stephen Fry as Winceworth and Sandy Toksvig as Mallory - humor and smarts in perfect harmony. It‘s a book to savor every wonderful word. Loved it.
