Well, this is a surprise! I got a package slip yesterday, telling me I had a package waiting at the post office from Germany. So I thought my #JolabokaflodSwap sender must be a German Litten. But when I picked up this festive parcel, I saw it was from the very sweet @BarbaraBB and I‘m very excited to see what she picked out for me 😄

squirrelbrain Hooray! How exciting! 2d
BarbaraBB Yay, I hope you will like it. And I am sorry it was just me for your #Jolabookaflodswap... Not very exciting maybe! But the chocolate 🍫 is good 😉😘 2d
BarbaraBB I don‘t know about the book, I haven‘t read it. But it seems good! Also: I love the tagged book you used! ❤️ 2d

Okay, this case is 🍌👖!

What Ulbricht did and how he did it is unbelievable, but how different law enforcement agencies were too busy taking credit instead of working together blew my mind! This case could have been solved much faster if people actually spoke to each other! And didn‘t turn rogue, of course.
Also, the author‘s foreshadowing annoyed me. Yes, I know things are going to end badly, but stop spoiling it!

Thanks for the rec @Cinfhen

Megabooks Fantastic book, isn‘t it?? 3d

Okay, I‘m doing it! I need to post this and get it over with before I change my mind again (for the 12th time). These are my #Top10oftheDecade #FictionEdition. I went with books published between 2010 and 2019, because most of my reading have been done in this decade anyway, so there were too many books to choose from otherwise 😅

And now I kinda want to reread them all. Maybe a plan for 2020? 🤔

AmyG A Little Life ❤️ That was my favorite of the decade. 4d
MicheleinPhilly I can‘t even begin to contemplate this. It‘s too stressful! 4d
Amiable I'm so glad to have discovered John Boyne in the past few years -- I am in awe of his talent. 4d

ljuliel You‘re putting an idea in my head when you mentioned a plan for 2020. I‘m half tempted to make a 2020 list of everyone‘s combined lists they‘re doing in here, then pick entirely off it for the next year. I‘ll do some thinking on it. 🤔 4d
Cinfhen Ohhhh, Pachinko!!! I didn‘t see that coming!!! And a few people have chosen this one, that I wasn‘t familiar with 4d
Cinfhen That would be so interesting @ljuliel to see how many of the other‘s books you enjoy!!! 4d
Kalalalatja @ljuliel that could be fun! If you do make a list, please share! In 2018 (I think), I did a recommendations reading challenge, in which I had littens recommend me their must read books, and then I picked 25 from that list to try and read. I didn‘t finish, but most of the books I did read were amazing! 4d
julesG It's soooooo hard to pick just 10 4d
Cinfhen Also I love the cover for this book which im not familiar with Deathless 4d
ljuliel @cinfhen @Kalalalatja I‘ll see what I can come up with for a huge list. I think others might jump in on this yet. ( I hope) , that way we‘ll have an even bigger selection to choose from ! 📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 4d
4thhouseontheleft Great list! 4d
4thhouseontheleft @ljuliel @cinfhen That‘s a fun idea, reminds me of a challenge earlier this year (last year?) where people swapped top 10 lists and read off each other‘s list for a month. I can‘t remember which Litten organized that. (edited) 4d
monalyisha @4thhouseontheleft It may have been me? I think the rules allowed a few more than 10 but that was the basic idea! I‘m organizing it again this year. #newyearwhodis 4d
4thhouseontheleft @monalyisha Yay! I didn‘t participate last time, but wanted to if you ever did it again! Was it a list of 20? Fuzzy memory 🤣 4d
monalyisha @4thhouseontheleft My memory is also fuzzy. I have a Google doc that I‘ll be leaning *heavily* on. 😅 (edited) 4d
BarbaraBB Such a great list Katja. I should definitely read the ones I don‘t know yet! 4d
Kalalalatja @AmyG it is just so good 💔 @MicheleinPhilly it helped me to set some “rules” like published in the decade, no graphic novels or poetry and so on. Maybe you could make your own rules? @Amiable me too! I just need to read more of his books 😊 @Cinfhen I loved Pachinko. I think I was my absolute fave of the year when I read it. And you know, I‘m a big fan of Sarah Moss Catherynne Valente, so I can highly recommend Bodies of Light and this 👉 4d
Kalalalatja @julesG I think I started with 30+ and then narrowed it down from there, but I had 3 I kept going back and forth on. It was so difficult! @4thhouseontheleft @monalyisha that seemed like such a fun challenge! @BarbaraBB thanks! I‘m so inspired by everyone‘s lists, my tbr is exploding! 😅 4d
RachelO ❤️ 4d
Rissreads I am loving reading all these lists. My tbr list is exploding but it's getting me excited about next year's reading! I've added a few from your post! 2d

My #Top10oftheDecade #NonFiction edition. I have read all of these within the last three years, and while I might not have given all of these 5 stars when I read them, these are the ones I remember having the biggest impact on me.

Now it is on to the dreaded fiction list. I‘m not really sure I can make a top ten, but you can bet your sweet behind, that I‘m going to try! 😅

I‘m so conflicted about this, I don‘t really know how to review it. On one hand, it was compulsory readable. I just couldn‘t stop. On the other hand, Joe‘s obsessiveness, jealousy, and sexism scared me so much, because that‘s real. It isn‘t a fictionalised monster, they are real problems in the world. And it made me so uncomfortable to read about. So yeah, not really sure how I feel right now.

#SocialMediaFocus last book for #Booked2019, tho! 🙌

4thhouseontheleft Great review! Congrats on finishing up the challenge! 1w
MicheleinPhilly I couldn‘t agree with you more. I enjoyed reading this book but the fetishization of Joe that I see all over the internet makes me want to puke. 1w
squirrelbrain I agree with your review - it made me quite uncomfortable.... 1w
See All 9 Comments
Christine Well said. 1w
batsy Yup, I agree. I felt the same. Compulsively readable and as a book I liked it a lot, but the way in which the book is talked about by fans is deeply unsettling. 1w
Cinfhen Congrats on completing #Booked2019 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉I approached YOU as a totally fictional story but I can see your point about Joe. (edited) 1w
Kalalalatja @batsy reading your comment makes me so happy, because I realise I wanted to use “compulsively”, not compulsory 😅 I knew it was wrong, I just couldn‘t remember the right word, so thanks! 1w
Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen thanks! Now I just have to start planning for #booked2020, but I‘m waiting to see which books I get for Christmas before I settle on anything 😄 1w
Kalalalatja @MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain @christine @batsy Joe gave me a big Incel-vibe, the way he blamed everybody else for everything and his misogynistic attitude. Just beyond creepy 1w

My Saturday #BookReport. I turned out, I needed to watch tv and series a bit more than I needed to read this week, so I didn‘t read as much as I expected. However, what I did read was great!

My two finished books are both 4⭐️, Frankissstein seems like it is going to be great, I just need to get into it, and I can‘t stop listening to You, even though it makes me mad and scared.

So all in all, a good week 👍

Cinfhen You is super disturbing / I can‘t imagine what the audio must be like 😱 1w
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen it is beyond creepy! It feels like the narrator is talking directly to me because he keeps saying “you”, but he does a horrifyingly good job at narrating Joe‘s anger, sexism, obsessiveness and creepiness 😳😱 1w

Sace I read this one. I think listening to it would be too scary! 😱 2w
ElizaMarie I read it at first then I relistened to it and I really preferred the audio. Joe is so so creepy! 1w
Leftcoastzen It seems like he‘s kinda yelling at the listener sometimes. 1w
Kalalalatja @Sace I haven‘t gotten to the really scary parts yet, I‘m just so creeped out by how stalkerish, misogynistic, obsessive and possessive Joe is. @ElizaMarie @Leftcoastzen I like the narrator, so far, but he gets intense at times! 1w
ElizaMarie I liked it both narrated and read. Also liked how he talks to the audience in the show. The second season comes out soon. I‘m super excited! 1w

I took a day off today just because, and celebrated with possibly the biggest croissant in town, a second cake (because why not), and finishing this wonderful book from @erzascarletbookgasm ❤️

These tales take well known fairytales and flip them on their head. We get a tale from Rumpelstiltskin‘s perspective, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and the title story, 7 Wild Swans. Very well done, I enjoyed them a lot!

I‘m so happy this book excists, even though I hate it have to excist. What Weinstein did, what way too many men continue to do to women is beyond horrifying, and we need to talk about it. Because silence lets the offenders keep harrassing, hurting, raping, violating women. I have more respect for the work journalists put into exposing men like Weinstein. Spaces, where women‘s stories can be told, are needed, and journalists can provide that space.

4thhouseontheleft Excellent review. I just read it too, and thought it was one of the best NF books I‘ve read this year. 2w

Heart Berries: A Memoir | Terese Mailhot

Sorry book, it is me, not you! I never read ebooks, but I decided to try with this because I got it through my library. But the format didn‘t help me take the content in, I just kept swiping the pages. I need to reread it again at some time, because Mailhot writes beautifully and poetically about tough subjects, and her words need to be taken in, thought over and felt, and I wasn‘t able to do that at the moment.

#IndigenousAuthor #Booked2019

Cinfhen I‘m surprised this book didn‘t resonate more strongly with you. I get it though about reading an Ebook. There is definitely a level of detachment. 2w
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen I‘m surprised, too! Some of it hit me right in the gut, which makes me think this is more a timing-and-format-issue more than it being the book‘s fault. I think I need to reread it in print or audio at some point, to really appreciate it! 2w
Pricel101 Ebooks and audio have to be in the right application, do you agree? This is the kind of book where every once in a while you have to look away and think about what you just read. 😓 2w
marleed When well written books don‘t rank above a solid B (4 stars), it really causes me to reflect because I often think it says more about me in the moment than the book itself. 2w

I was worried this would be dry and a bit boring, but it wasn‘t (However it might be more interesting if you have a professional interest in the subject). Grisel uses her own experiences of struggling with addiction, and it works really well. It makes the science easier to understand, and it makes Grisel more relatable.

I read this book in a day, and that says quite a lot about it, since I can‘t remember the last time I did that. I didn‘t get to Frankissstein this week, so on it goes to next week‘s reading list. But I‘m most excited about Sadie (from the sweet @BarbaraBB ❤️), so I think I‘ll start it today!

BarbaraBB I hope it lives up to your expectations 💕 (edited) 1mo
TrishB I really enjoyed Sadie 👍🏻 1mo
Cinfhen I was NOT a fan of Sadie but that‘s a very unpopular opinion! Enjoy your birthday gifts 🎁 ❤️🎁❤️ 1mo

A Piece of Danish Happiness | Sharmi Albrechtsen
post image

I just signed up to #ReadingEurope2020, and I‘m excited! 🙌

@BarbaraBB asked for inspiration for Danish authors, so I thought I would compile a little sample of both classic and contemporay Danish authors, that I have read a liked/loved. There‘s a lot of crime/mystery writers in Denmark, but that‘s not my genre, so you‘ll have to find those for yourself 😅

List of authors in the comments 👇

Kalalalatja 1. Hans Christian Andersen - read his fairytales!
2. Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) - most known for Out of Africa
3. Hans Scherfig - The Stolen Spring is the only book I had to read in High School Danish, that I ended up loving
4. Jakob Ejersbo - his Africa trilogy is considered a bit of a masterpiece in Denmark
5. Lene Kaaberbøll - YA Fantasy writer
6. Olga Ravn - contemporay, poetic, and a bit weird
1mo
Crazeedi Thank you so much for the list! Very helpful to me for the challenge ❤ 1mo
Kalalalatja Other noteworthy Danish authors (but not really my jam): Helle Helle, Dorthe Nors and Naja Marie Aidt - very Nordic, very contemporary, very minimalistic, very Danish 🇩🇰 1mo

This was a fun and informative GN, but I have a feeling it would work better for a younger audience. I knew a lot of the women and the history told in the book, so there were no surprises for me. But nice artwork and a feminist history is enough to earn a pick from me! 🙌

Ever wondered what Penelope did all those years Odysseus was out adventuring, waring, tricking and exploring? This book gives Penelope‘s point of view, from being married off, always being in the shadow of her cousin, being disregarded, left behind and left to fend for herself in a world where a woman‘s word doesn‘t count for much. And in typical Atwood style, this is feminist, strong and a new take on a classic tale, and it was great!

When a book makes ypu tear up in your car on the way to work, you know it is a good one. This book felt like a squeeze to the heart and a big hug all in one. It was sweet, diverse, sad at times, and fun at times. Lily and Dunkin felt, to me, like great representations of a transcender child and a child with mental illness in the form of bipolar disorder.

In a maybe-not-so-distant #future we might end up in a situation like Peter - he is going as a missionary to a new planet to preach the word of the bible. At Earth he leaves his wife Bea, and slowly, and from a universe away, Peter learns how life on Earth has been changing in drastic ways. Will there even be a home for him to return to?

Also, this cover is so shiny, I can‘t even 😍

When Dunkin sees a #beautifulstranger in the form of a blond girl, in a red dress, with eyes as blue as forest lakes, he becomes instantly interested in learning more about her. But the next time he meets the girl, she is wearing boy‘s clothes and says her name is Tim. Which is the name Lily was given at birth, but not the name of her real self.

And so begins the story of Lily and Dunkin, which is shaping up to be just wonderful ❤️

My #WeeklyForecast consists of three library books that are due in a couple of weeks and whatever audiobooks I feel inspired to listen to during my drive to and from work.

I‘m pretty sure I won‘t read both of the novels, but I might have a bit more reading time the next week than usual, so I‘m keeping my hopes up 🤞

Caterina We read the Penelopiad in undergrad the semester that we read the Odyssey in Greek! I really enjoyed what Atwood did with female characters who have very little voice in the original! 😊 It's also a super quick read as I remember. 👍 1mo

Phew, this felt like a punch to the gut, but in a good way. I expected a sweet, YA love story, which I definitely got, but I got a whole lot more, too. I hadn‘t expected the darker sides of the story - bullying, racism, violence, abuse - but they brought some rawness and realness to the story, which I really liked!

Megabooks It‘s definitely more than your average YA romance! 1mo
GypsyKat This is one of my favorites! ❤️😭 1mo

A quick audiobook for my commute. I‘m so not ready to not be in this world, so I‘m trying to find every read-a-like I can. So if you have any recs for a big fan of Rothfuss‘ work, please post it in a comment! 🤞🙏

1. Bring able to connect with book lovers, getting to know people from all over the world, getting honest book recs
2. I just scroll past, everyone likes something different
3. Grids, as suggested by @BarbaraBB and only one edition of each book. I hate having to stack a book again and again.
4. It has become less after I started working, but I try to post at least a couple of times a week
👇

Kalalalatja 5. I liked a lot of the activities in the beginning, as it was a great way to connect to other littens. I really like readalongs, photo challenges and reading challenges, as they inspire me and makes me want to read more than I do. (edited) 1mo
Kalalalatja 6. Everything change, and I try to enjoy Litsy for what it is. But my use of the app has changed as my life has changed, and that‘s okay 1mo

The Glass Town Game | Catherynne M. Valente
post image

This book is about a boy and three #GirlsGoneWild in the fantastical Glass Town. Where Napoleon is riding around on a porcelain rooster, suitcases can transform into transportation and people are more often made from iron or wood, than from blood and bones. Oh, and all of this is an imaginary world made up by the Brontë siblings.

Valente reimagines the Brontës childhood, and it is a delightful read for both young and old ?
