In 1933, William E. Dodd becomes the first American Ambassador to Hitler‘s Germany. He was a mild mannered professor who had studied in Germany. The Germany that he had loved was in the midst of a tremendous change and horror. His daughter,Martha plays a pivotal role,as she becomes popular with the Nazis. A glimpse into the minds of those in power at the time, and what was assumed would just go away. A superb title. #authoramonth2023 #eriklarson

No One Goes Alone | Erik Larson

#NoOneGoesAlone #ErikLarson
#DoubleSpin #NovelNovember

This is Erik Larson's first attempt at Fiction. It is a ghost story grounded in history. Psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? It is only available on audio, because Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

EadieB This book really didn't work for me. It wasn't really scary and I was a bit bored at times. I enjoyed the story but I think he should stick to what he does best, historical mysteries. 2y
Andrew65 Shame it wasn‘t a bit better. 2y
EadieB @Andrew65 I love 💕 his other books 📚 but this just didn‘t work for him! 2y

I picked this book up out of curiousity. The title sounded interesting and sounded like something out of the Twilight Zone.
I've only just started it. So far, I find it interesting even though I don't read historical stuff often.
If you've read this, what did you think?

Thunderstruck | Erik Larson

#Thunderstruck #ErikLarson #BookSpinBingo

In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men; Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of wireless means of communication; whose lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time. There is fascinating detail of Edwardian London which causes the story to start out slowly.

EadieB I'm not sure everyone will enjoy this book as much as The Devil in the White City but mid-point Larsen merges these subjects and the story finally takes off. Larson's ability to make the 1890's come alive through his research is no small fete and proves Larson to be the great writer that he is. I have read all of his books and have enjoyed all of them. If you love historical accounts of true events then you should read his books. 3y

#IsaacsStorm #ErikLarson #BookSpinBingo #August2021

This is the story of the 1900 hurricane that hit the island of Galveston, Texas on September 8th. Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the US Weather Bureau, failed to predict the immensity of the storm as the storm made a sudden turn towards Galveston after hitting Florida. The book is well-written and researched using telegrams, letters, reports and testimony of survivors.

EadieB We learn about the making of the storm, the wrath of the storm which killed 6,000 people and the cleanup aftermath. It still remains the greatest natural disaster in American history. It is a powerful and gripping account which brings the hurricane to life for the reader. If you love history with a mixture of science, then you will enjoy this book. 3y

#BookSpinBingo #July2021

This is an excellent account of the Nazi's bombing of London WWII during Churchill's first years as PM. Interaction with family members & staff & interesting anecdotes. Larson‘s an excellent researcher & this one is well done. I love the fact that Churchill taught his people "the art of being fearless." Having a leader like Churchill was a great comfort to the people. I look forward to reading more books by Larson.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y
Daisey I‘ve enjoyed a few of Larson‘s books and think I need to add this one to the list. Stacked! 3y
