So...at the beginning of the year I set a goal to read one book per quarter that was at least 700 pages; I even made a hashtag. Well, 1st quarter '17 is in the books & I didn't achieve that goal so I decided to change the rules to 600+ 🙃My goal, my rules, right? 😉To those who posted with 700+ books so far, I am impressed!Well done! For everyone else, I just made it a little easier 😊#bigbooks17 #bigbooks Do tag me so I can see your big books!📚

Lola Shout out to @Notmacaroniandcheese (who I believe already has two 700+ page monsters read this year) and @Marchpane who read one of my big books from last year (edited) 7y
Lola My first quarter book weighed in at 628 pages 7y
SusanInTiburon My husband likes to read aloud; first quarter this year we got through Middlemarch; now we're on Moby-Dick. 7y

Lola @SusanInTiburon That sounds fantastic! And those are two big books that have been on my list since...forever 😑 7y
SusanInTiburon @Lola you need your own personal reader! 7y
Lola @SusanInTiburon Truth! I should recruit my teenagers. I'm sure they have some big books for assigned class reading. Two birds/one stone 😛 7y

Finished Anna Karenina last and finally decided my next big challenge book. You know it's going to be a long haul when, after finishing the first issue, it still says you are 0% through the book. #bigbooks17

Reviewsbylola I will say a prayer for you. 😂 8y
Notmacaroniandcheese @Reviewsbylola Haha! Thank you! I might need it! Though from what I can tell it doesn't look to be as bad as Anna Karenina! 8y
Reviewsbylola It doesn't sound like it but I've never read it, so I can't say for sure! 8y
Verity I've read a couple of Dumas' others and they've been a lot of fun even if long. 8y

We're on the final stretch guys! I feel like this one has taken a year to read, but it is well worth it! #bigbooks17

Megabooks My ex-boyfriend reads it every year. I was impressed by his ability to get through it that frequently! 8y
TheNextBook I have bailed on it at least twice... 8y
Reviewsbylola It took me 4.5 months to read on serial. I wasn't a fan. 8y

Finally getting to this book, which survived the first round of the #TOB17. I've had the ARC since May and I've heard nothing but great things, but the size of it has kept me from picking it up. I did resolve to read more of my #bigbooks this year and we are closing in on the first quarter, and it's still a contender, so here we go! #bigbooks17 #tob #tob2017 #bookandcoffee #morningreading

Pickpick

#bigbooks17 I didn't guys! I've finished this 800+ page monster of a book and I've never felt more accomplished in my life. I have debated for the longest time wether or not to pick up this series since I've already watched the show. If anyone is asking themselves the same question, then trust me, it's so worth it. I didn't think anything could be better than this show, but as always, the book is better.

Pickpick

When a book is 860 pages it had better be good and this one's a cracker. No boring bits!

The time travel angle had a pretty good logical consistency, which is always a plus. I like that sort of thing to be well thought out. King has a plausible explanation for every twist and turn of the plot.

60s nostalgia, tinged with sinister foreboding in the King style, plus the JFK thriller propelling the plot along, adds up to a top read.

CogsOfEncouragement This was my first King! Loved it 😃📚❤ 8y
Lola Well done! 👍🏻❤ 8y
Marchpane @Lola thanks for starting this challenge! Gave me the kick up the butt I needed to finally read this 😂 8y

Lola @Marchpane I'm so glad! And that's exactly why I started it- to kick my own butt to read some of the chunksters I have on my shelves. I did read 11/22/63 last year and loved it. Still haven't decided on my first big book for 2017. 8y
Marchpane @Lola I'd almost forgotten how good chunksters can be - it's a different feeling being immersed in one book for so long. 8y
kristinshafel My husband and I just watched the miniseries! Pretty well done 😊 8y
Tanner I really enjoyed this book! 8y
vivastory @Marchpane I've been enjoying big books the past few months, especially at the very beginning of the month. Last month it was Don Quixote & this month it is Dune. It's a great way to begin a new reading month. 8y
SaraFair I am listening to this one and I have gotten stuck with the stuff in the middle. Ready to back to the action! Need Readers Digest condensed version! 8y

This big book surprisingly isn't as slow paced and intimidating as I thought it was going to be. Also, not as graphic as the show so far, which is surprising.

sprainedbrain I'm in. My copy will be here Tuesday. 👍 8y
JenP @sprainedbrain 👍Excellent! 8y
SuperPunkNinja I'm scared but you can count me in! 8y
JenP @McShelfington 👏🏼Strength in numbers! I hope it will be a fun experience with all us us cheering each other on 8y
mauveandrosysky One of my favorite books of all time! So glad to see that this is happening. Can't wait to see all the posts about it. 8y
JenP @mauveandrosysky that's good to hear! Any tips for us first time time readers? 8y
mauveandrosysky Honestly, the way you're doing it (50-60 pages a week) is perfect. I did it similarly (100 pages a week) and it made it feel very doable w/o consuming me (i.e. I could read other books while I read IJ). I also read it with a buddy so I can vouch for the fact that buddy reading it helps with accountability. 8y
mauveandrosysky But aside from that my biggest tip is to not get discouraged in the first couple hundred pages. Things will start coming together and it'll pick up. Also, this is one of those books that you read just as much for the journey as the destination, so try to just enjoy the brilliance of certain passages w/o being too overly focused on how it all comes together. 8y
BookishTrish I've got an ebook copy and I'm up for giving it a try. It'll be my first David Foster Wallace. Do you repeat readers recommend the paper version? 8y
JenP @mauveandrosysky thanks, really helpful! 8y
JenP @BookishTrish great! I am a first time reader but have heard from many friends (who have read it) that a physical copy is the way to go. But I think have an expound might also be helpful -for looking stuff up. If you do stick with ecopy I would recommend making a photocopy of page 223 that you can keep handy after you read past that page 8y
BookishTrish @JenP Thanks for the heads up! 8y
Currey I have an e-book also, but I am going to look for a used physical book and attempt to keep up with you. We will see. Have plenty of post it's on hand. 8y
JenP @Currey sounds great! 8y
LeahBergen I'm in, too. I'll be buying my copy today or tomorrow. Woo hoo! 8y
Hooked_on_books I'm in. I'll be removing my bookmark from page 104, where it has resided for many years, and plan to push through to the end! 8y
JenP @Hooked_on_books 👏🏼👏🏼 8y
slategreyskies I'm in! My copy has been sitting on my bookshelf for too long! It needs some attention! :) 8y
Skeebies05 I'll join in! I thought Id get a print copy but then realized If I do the kindle version I can read a few pages at work too :) 8y
Grzebra I'm in, I looked into the audio version and it was $65! Er no 8y
sisilia Can I still join in? I have the book since ages ago 8y
JenP @sisilia of course! We start reading on Feb 1st and I'm thrilled to have you join us. 8y
JenP @Grzebra wow! 8y
JenP @Skeebies05 excellent. Welcome! 8y
sisilia @JenP Yay! Looking forward to start reading it with all of you. Do we discuss with each other in a group chat? 8y
JenP @sisilia I think we can probably just chat by using the hashtag since there are a lot of us. I was going to post some questions if needed to spark discussion but I figure that everyone else will also be posting questions and discussing. But maybe at the end of each week we could do a group chat? I hadn't thought that far ahead ☺️ but I do like that idea 8y
Godmotherx5 I tried reading it last year & DNF. A buddy read may make it easier. Great idea! 8y
JenP @Godmotherx5 hope you join us! 8y
Godmotherx5 @JenP I am considering it. 🤔 8y
Robothugs I'd like to do this with all of you! 8y
JenP @Robothugs 👍happy to have you join us! 8y
Purple610 I love we have such a large group!! So glad to have all you along for the ride! @JenP THANK YOU for putting all of these resources together. Even though I go into books blindly I will be sure to reference these things as we go along. 8y
Gleefulreader Oh - I love this! Definitely going to pick up a copy tomorrow and join in. Thank you so much for organizing! 8y
JenP @Purple610 I know, right? Great to have so many join us. I do think some prep will help us make it through but I know lots of readers will be just diving in too. 8y
Purple610 @JenP I was thinking I might consider giving Hamlet a quick read at some point. Literary parallels are always enjoyable and would love to pick up on that. I read Hamlet too long ago to grasp subtle bits. 8y
JenP @Purple610 I'm rereading it now! I read it in high school although I've seen the play several times in the last 5 years. 8y
Simona I decided to try! I look forward to this buddy reading experience. 8y
JenP @Simona wonderful! 8y
wonga i'd like to try if i can get a book by Wednesday 😀 I've been interested in reading it it ever since seeing the movie The End Of The Tour. it would also fit in with my #bigbooks17 reading challenge 👍 8y
JenP @wonga great! We're also reading at a slow pace so even if you get a copy later, you should be able to catch up easily! 8y

Needed a book to listen to during work today, so I'm now switching from serial reader to audiobook for this one. It is certainly going much quicker. #bigbooks17

candidates (from my shelves) for #bigbooks17. the plan is to read 4 books this year that are at least 700 pages! i'm behind already, since I'm finishing up some library books 😬 #readinggoals @Lola

Cinfhen I used to LOVE chunky reads but now, I have reading A.D.D ~ can't focus for so long 😜 8y
Lola That stack is a thing of beauty!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻 8y
Zelma Agreed with above that chunky reads are awesome. I like short quick books at times but there is something so satisfying about diving into the world of a chunkster for awhile. 8y
