This was a really good book with lots of tension, but it‘s also pretty dark. Tons of trigger warnings! And there were some really good twists towards the end.

#bookspinbingo - this is my #bookspin for this month

This was EXCELLENT. It‘s the story (or rather, the stories) of a house and its surrounding forest in New England; a multigenerational saga of sorts—but of a place instead of a family. We follow the people who come and go, but also the trees, the beetles, a catamount—as they both shape and are shaped by the unique history of the place in which they dwell, a place that outlasts them all. Each section has a very different feel, and between each, ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …there are photographs, letters, and other ephemera from which readers piece together connections and digressions and clues about the place as we follow its story through time. Usually interconnected stories like this can feel disjointed to me, but the connections and clues kept me engaged and eager to read on. I loved the way the pieces added up to an interlinked whole, the structure echoing the known and unknown connections we forge ⤵️ 9h
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …with the places we inhabit and the people who‘ve gone before us.

Thank you to @Librarybelle for the #AuldLangSpine rec, thank you to @monalyisha for the Auld Lang Spine match, and thank you to @TheAromaofBooks for picking the number that made this my February #BookSpin (yes, this is a very belated review 😆)

Librarybelle So glad you loved this one! It was such an unusual book. I still think about it! 8h
Cheryl_Russell I finished this one not long ago. It is fantastic. I think it will be one of those books where you learn more every time you read it. 8h
BarbaraJean @Librarybelle It was fascinating and so well done! @Cheryl_Russell I agree—I‘m hoping to re-read it with my book group at some point. 3h

A story that explores what defines us as “human”. Love in all its forms is at the center of it all.

I didn‘t realize this is a reprint of an earlier publication (pre-popularity). I can see the bones of what will eventually become The House in the Cerulean Sea. The banter is there but some parts were a little disjointed. Overall a great read but please check the trigger warnings.

May #bookspin is complete! @TheAromaofBooks

Book 4 in the series and definitely better than book three. The characters were much better in this one and I felt the plot and development improved over the previous book. Not my favorite of the series but close. 3.5ish ⭐️

A woman wakes up exhausted every morning, limbs aching, with unexplained bruising. She eventually finds out that she‘s sleepwalking. Strange things are happening - cats start to run away from her - and she tries to ascertain what is happening. It‘s a short read, a bit creepy, and one that keeps you hooked. The ending? Yeah, who knows what happened but I have several theories and I‘m okay with that. #offtheshelf #bookspin

Cathythoughts Sounds good. I have a sample on my kindle .. I‘ll try it 👍🏻😁 3d
CBee This was definitely creepy. Normally I can‘t do sad animal things but, for some reason I could with this book? And after a minute of being mad about the ending, I decided I was okay with it 😂 3d
Suet624 @CBee I know what you mean about the sad animal thing. She just breezes over it so quickly that it kind of didn‘t sink in as hard as it could‘ve. 3d
CBee @Suet624 that‘s exactly it! Didn‘t have time to really ponder it before it was over 🤷‍♀️ 3d

This short book packs a lot of emotion! Rocky and her husband and two adult children are vacationing on the New England shore for a week. Her menopausal experience and memories of having and raising the kids blend with what they are all going through in the trip to create a whole atmosphere. There isn‘t a plot to speak of, but if you‘re around her age you‘ll likely relate to the bulk, even if you didn‘t have kids. Excellent.

Suet624 I could so relate to this story. 3d
KAO I enjoyed this one! 3d

Another absolutely beautiful day to be outside. Kids are playing some Tball and I'm going to start this book as my #BookSpin with dark blue on the cover. I've read mixed reviews on this book so we will see if I like it. This is my first Richard Powers book.

I didn‘t see that coming! You think it‘s going to be a coming-of-age story, then a family epic, but then Smiley goes meta. It starts sneakily, but then she fully owns it by the end. I don‘t want to spoil it for you, bro I won‘t say more. Great writing. Stick with it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

What day is it? j/kI know this happened a week ago. Time just flies by. #bookspin #doublespin

Mean Spirit was a #bookspin pick on another year too. The Crossing is also a #husbandpick that I should have read last year. 😂

BkClubCare Oh!! I am so pleased/heartwarmed? To see Mean Spirit. 🤗 4d
Reggie 15 years ago I was all about Cormac McCarthy and now I can‘t be bothered. And there‘s plenty to read from him. Maybe you‘ll inspire me to read him again. 4d
Bookzombie @BkClubCare 🙂 Have you read it? I have had a copy for a while. 3d

Bookzombie @Reggie I enjoy McCarthy and I‘m sure I will like this one. I just don‘t seem to have the mental capacity for some books lately. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3d
BkClubCare @Bookzombie YES!!! I read it after reading that famous version that had the famous movie 🎥 made. THIS is better!! (But KotFM is good companion read) AND I told everyone to read Mean Spirit 3d

JenReadsAlot @AmyG This is the only one I've read by her so far. 4d
BkClubCare Heft was so good! (Theory that the first one you read by a favorite author will always be a favorite 😂) Enjoy the entire oeuvre 4d
AmyG I so agree with the first one you read. Works for me with music, too. @BkClubCare (edited) 4d
