The APA (American Psychological Association) wrote an article in July about the importance of kids reading diverse books. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2025/07-08/fighting-book-bans-censorship?utm_source=...

IriDas Had that conversation with a conservative acquaintance once who was a reader and espoused that idea that reading makes a person more sympathetic toward others, but she hated all the “out groups” and absolutely refused to read about anything different than her own worldview. Reading doesn‘t help unless we read broadly. 3w
ncsufoxes @IriDas I was just having a conversation with our 16 yo about more diverse stories & movies. He was talking about how the new Percy Jackson series has more diversity than the books. We went over who writes the stories & what does that mean for kids that aren‘t white to not see themselves as heroes. I was saying to him it‘s only been in recent years that there has been a push for students to read more diverse stories & authors. He is reading I Am 3w
ncsufoxes Malala for English right now. When his older brother was a Senior in HS (2022) for his English class he took a trial course that they were piloting (this was in San Diego) on diverse stories. He loved it. I wish that all schools would do this. He learned a lot but also these are frequent discussions we have in our house, so he excelled in the class. It makes me so sad to know that so many people are fearful & unwilling to listen & learn from 3w

ncsufoxes others. But that is how my MIL is, she doesn‘t want to think outside her narrow narrative. I love all the stories coming out & learning so much that I didn‘t know about. The problem is I can‘t keep up with all the books I want to read in the amount of time I have in a day to read. So, alas I keep buying too many books. 3w
IriDas @ncsufoxes That program sounds great. When I was a kid in school if we read a book by woman (white, of course) it was a big deal. lol. As for too many books, I‘m going to make my kids read them to me when I‘m old and in a home. ;) 3w
AnnCrystal Having these conversations both in schools and at home is so important. Bravo 📚👏🏼🥲✊🏼💝. 3w

#CharacterCharm #Librarian Nancy Pearl started recommending books on a Seattle public radio segment. It grew into a series of books . She recommended so many great books over the years , fiction, non-fiction, historical, series etc. Her books were always fun to browse, it‘s fun to pick a category you may not have tried before, she always has a knack for finding a good title to try to see if you might want to read further!

Worst. Slump. Ever.
My reading challenge goal is so disappointed in me! 😭
Cant seem to get into hardly anything. Tried new genres, going to the library, Kindle books, audiobooks, book books. And I‘m starting to get twitchy. Grrrr. What should I read?

BookmarkTavern Go back to an old favorite! That usually works for me. 6mo
Posh_Salad I‘ll give it another go @BookmarkTavern ! 6mo

I read 154 books this year! At the beginning of the year I started drawing the spines in my book journal with a stack for each month & am proud to say I kept it up all year long. I‘m definitely going to continue to do this in 2025 as I love the way these pages turn out… plus it‘s good practice for my art.

In the middle of 2 more books but I don‘t know if I will finish them today. Might wait to post my StoryGraph wrap-up tomorrow just in case.

Your 'year of reading' from Goodreads has a different look this year.
Edit: 😆, it doesn't. It's the same at the website.
