A Clockwork Orange
A Clockwork Orange | Anthony Burgess
Anthony Burgess's stage play of his infamous cult novel and film of the same name. Alex and his vicious teenage gang revel in horrific violence, mugging and gang rape. Alex also revels in the music of Beethoven. The Gang communicates in a language which is as complicated as their actions. When a drug-fuelled night of fun ends in murder, Alex is finally busted and banged up. He is given a choice - be brainwashed into good citizenship and set free, or face a lifetime inside. Anthony Burgess's play with music, based on his own provocative 1962 novella of the same name, was first published in 1987. A Clockwork Orangewas made into a film classic by Stanley Kubrick in 1971 and was dramatizes by the RSC in 1990.

This was my bookclub's pick for last month and I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it. But it was so strange that it was engaging and I ended up baffled but satisfied. It was weird lol. It definitely made for an interesting discussion with my friends. Overall I'm glad I finally read it.

I'm so happy I got this complete edition way back in the day because it feels so much more complete narratively.

There were definitely times I had to pause because the things described on paper were horrific and made me out right uncomfortable, but I am also so glad I finally got to read it.

My only criticism so far is the slang doesn't use the right conjugation. I'm going to give the author the benefit of the doubt and say that this was done on purpose, but it's still funny to me when people are “govoreeting“ instead of “govorat.“ and “Malenky“ instead of “nimnoga“

Doppoetry I completely understand that it's supposed to be like an “oooh scary foreigner speak“ type thing and like slang, and the meaning is not always clear, so it's an “If you know, you know“ but sentence-wise, it always throws me off when what's written is

“The boys see man in the street listen to words on the radio and eyes the girls small bit“

This is yesterday's! Oops!
#OnThisDay in 1917, English author Anthony Burgess was born. A gifted linguist, Burgess once translated T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land into Persian, and created the language of Nadsat for his best known work, The Clockwork Orange. That title is said to be a play on words, it is speculated that Burgess misheard "chocolate orange" while in Glasgow Pub and liked the mondegreen so much he used it for his book. #HistoryGetsLIT

4 ⭐️s!
I could not put this book down! I read it over the course of two days. Not sure what I can say about it that hasn‘t already been articulated in a much better way by much smarter people than I. Suffice it to say I thought it was an excellent study of human nature and what “evil” we all allow in ourselves and therefore, in our world. Burgess wrote using the Nadsat language in such a way that the story flows almost like a work by ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Shakespeare. Alex is a cruel, dangerous wretch, yet seeing him stripped of his choice, his humanity, turns him into a sympathetic character. Our failings as individuals add up to our failures as a society, which perpetuates the broken system and continuously churns out wicked monsters. Is removing the choice and turning us into mindless drones the path to good, or the path to an even greater evil? My 3rd read for the August #BookSpinBingo! 4y

Mother-Daughter Book Club Verdict: A pick for the brilliant, chilling writing, the Nadsat language, the dystopian setting, but less so for Burgess‘s thesis on criminality/free will and Alex‘s character development. The influence of Cold War paranoia is strong as is the white male misogynistic POV. We both disagree with Burgess‘s defense of Ch.21 which feels tacked on and weak and doesn‘t demonstrate true character development. ⤵️

KVanRead Further, the ‘boys will boys‘ explanation it offers of Alex‘s youth feels pretty damn offensive. (edited) 4y

This book disappointed me! I thought all the main themes are grossly obvious. I also am just not really a huge fan of violence in general, so duh it didn't really click with me. I didn't hate it completely though. Alex was one of those characters that you hate but love, is terrible, but you kind of root for at the same time.

This book was OUT THERE, I‘ll readily admit. In just a few short chapters, I had effortlessly adapted to this brand new language, utilizing words that don‘t even exist outside of this novel. It is incredibly sophisticated and unique in what it does with language, separating it from every other book I have read. Love this book!

A Clockwork Orange is not an enjoyable read. I don‘t think that I could recommend it, but simultaneously I wouldn‘t discourage anyone from reading it either. My tl;dr summary would be that everyone is evil, there are no good guys, and everything sucks. If you can accept that reality with a heaping serve of extreme violence then this might be the book for you. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/a-clockwork-orange-anthony-burgess/

TrishB Great summary. I would agree and would never read again. 5y
Bookwomble Ah, I love this book, for its language and poetry, and for its unflinching look at the ease with which the casual evil of an authoritarian society infects the body of the people. I think it's such a relevant book for the unfortunate direction in which the West seems to be slipping. 5y

This was a very strange reading experience. The nadsat language really distanced me from the story - I kept having to stop and think about what a certain word meant - but as most of the story was fairly awful subject matter, maybe that was for the best.
