I found this copy of Carrie for $2 while travelling. I‘d not read it before so the timing was perfect for a small village AirBnB read. I love the cover of this one.
It‘s much more fulfilling and multi-dimensional than the movie(s). Not my favourite of his work, I think he got a lot better but it‘s the perfect size for what it is, the story & characters & torment of Carrie developed well. I thought the closing line was stupid and unnecessary.

Started our movie marathon with some classic Stephen King. The book of Christine is so much creepier than the film. 15pts for spooky films plus an extra 15pts as all based on books. #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter @Clwojick

The story is told in a very interesting way. It pops back and forth between characters experiencing the story in real time and news, academic, and court reports after the prom. I did not appreciate the vulgar parts, so I skimmed through those. But it‘s definitely a classic, scary high school tale of a telekinetic girl, poorly treated by her mother and classmates, who gets her revenge not just on her classmates that abused her but the entire town.

Jotting down some spooky movies I hope to watch next month! Scream is our official team movie (yay!) and I have more classics but hope to watch some new stuff as well.

Any Netflix or other streaming suggestions? My last binges were You and All of Us Are Dead, and I also enjoyed the new Predator movie, Prey. 😊

As problematic as Carrie is by today's standards, it's still an amazing read, and representative of the best in Stephen King foreshadowing, which he employs to great effect throughout. The first time I read this, I was in middle school and had no knowledge of what would happen. On that read, the foreshadowing served to heighten my anticipation. This time around, knowing how it would all end, the foreshadowing only evoked a sense of sadness. 5/5

Another fantastic read by Stephen king , every iv spoken to said this book scared them but for me I found it incredibly sad every page I just wanted to protect carrie . Also a nice quick easy read so a good book as an introduction into King's work 🥰

KathyWheeler I felt more the way you did when I read this book. Not scared just angry for Carrie. 3mo
emmalouise1 @KathyWheeler yes the anger I had was unreal she had no one and nowhere to go ,school was just as bad as home . Just screaming the whole way through for somebody to help her to save her . 3mo
KathyWheeler @emmalouise1 Exactly! People often miss the human story amid the horror in Stephen King‘s books. This was a tale of abuse where the victim had no escape, and she was forced to extremes. 3mo

1. I don‘t read much horror.
2. 👮🕵️‍♂️🌂💼🩸🗡🗝🖊🚨⚰️🧐
3. I like mysteries because, while there are usually recognizable characters and tropes, the story can still go in many different directions and take place nearly anywhere.
4. If it‘s a true impulse read, interesting cover art would be more intriguing.

My first #ReadKing book is complete! This is a reread for me and a very low pick. Probably just above the "meh" stage. I've always liked this story and it's a quick read but there are just So. Many. Words! That's King for you though ?‍♀️

The colours in this edition just go great with this picture and the fire/water contrast are perfect!

I've officially made it official so now I have to do it! 🤣

I've been wanting to do this for years and got in the LosersClub when it started but I can't stick to monthly reads and only made it to The Shining. So I'm at it again and making it a real challenge! Every book in the King catalog, either by pub date or in any specific order. I start Jan 1 and go until I'm done! My reward for reading a book? Buying the next one! #ReadKing

FantasyChick If anyone wants to join in, I've made a StoryGraph challenge to keep me honest 🤣 Each prompt is a different book. No check ins, no rewards, just the joy of getting through this massive list! https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/9ebdabd9-e867-4019-b94c-72b7c89... 11mo

Feels like it took me forever to get through Carrie even though it‘s such a short book. Honestly, I went into it without knowing anything about it (I‘ve never seen the movies) and I wasn‘t sure what to expect. This is only the 3rd King book I‘ve read so far and I‘m anxious to keep diving into his writing.

Day 21 of #21DaysofHorror
My Stephen King origin story has two different timelines. For as long as I can remember I have loved King in theory. I was raised on the movies & made for tv adaptations of his works. We are living in a second golden age of King adaptations. The first occurred in the late 80s-early 90s with such works as the Children of the Corn, Cat's Eye, Sometimes They Come Back, Dead Zone etc, . As far as his books go, I recall👇

vivastory reading a few of his stories here & there but it was a little over 5 years ago when I sat down & read one. It was the Cycle of the Werewolf. Honestly what I remember most about it was the Bernie Wrightson illustrations & wondering if Silver Bullet would be worth watching. Fast forward 6 months later when I read Carrie & everything changed. Although I had read Dracula several months prior, Stoker's inclusion in his classic novel of journal entries 13mo
vivastory & shipping manifests was still fresh in mind. Now I see King using the same format in his debut novel & would discover in subsequent books that King has a fondness for the epistolary format. Plus, the ending of it was just absolute no holds barred chaos. Several years later, & 30 books into King's catalog, this remains my go to book to recommend to people who want to try Stephen King for the first time. (edited) 13mo
vivastory It's no longer my favorite book by him. It's not even in my top 10, but it literally changed my life. Thanks to everyone who joined me on this macabre & fun journey over the past 3 weeks! A big thanks to @reggie for joining in & posting his favorites as well! This has been a real blast! 13mo

ValerieAndBooks I was a big SK fan through HS and college—- basically all the 1980s for me. But then his books started getting bigger and that was about when I was married with kids. Now that I‘m basically an empty nester (and have a son who is a fan), have been reading him again. 13mo
vivastory @ValerieAndBooks That's wonderful that you & your son can have that experience! A few weeks ago when I dropped off groceries for my grandpa he tried to pass me his copy of Billy Summers since he'd just finished it. I already own it, so I declined, but we had a nice conversation about King's books. 13mo
Bookzombie Awesome post! I‘m not sure how many I have read now. I had been reading them randomly over the years, but I started trying to read them in order of publication a while ago, so I need to get back to it. 13mo

#LittensDressedInBlood Today's prompt is Revenge

There is not another book that I can think of that deals with revenge on such a massive scale. Bullied, teased, tormented, Carrie White just wants to fit in. And just when it seems that might be happening... a bucket full of pig's blood on prom night undoes her dreams. “They're all going to laugh at you“ turns into screams.

Honestly, if I didn‘t already know the story I probably wouldn‘t have finished the book itself. I was curious to see how the original differed from the movie. I really didn‘t like the way it was written. I‘m sure the die hard King fans wont be too happy about that 😂 but I like chapters 🤷🏻‍♀️

Finished reading this before work this morning. Stephen King‘s first published novel. Some of the writing was dated of course, but overall this book was different than I expected. His style of providing character thoughts within the narrative took me a little getting used to. By the end, I was hooked and invested in this story. 4⭐️

I wondered while reading this if King was bullied in high school, his vision for retaliation is deadly. 😅 I like reading about cults and religious fanatics so any parts with Carrie's mother I enjoyed. As my first King while I enjoyed his writing I wasn't blown away. Maybe its because I already knew the story, or maybe it was just his first book and he hadn't honed his craft yet. I did find it hard to put down though. #bookreview

💛💛💛💛 I feel like most people know the story of Carrie without reading the book necessarily, and I enjoyed reading King‘s first novel! I would say it‘s a bit of a moralistic story aside from the horror in the sense of how we treat other people and the consequences (although pretty drastic in terms of this story!) of being unkind.
