Excellent
I started this in April at the park on a mood, and finished in August. Fast-paced (for me, I'm slow), good characterization, fun that Spenser consults his degreed, therapist wife on cases to gauge the psychology and possible motivations behind people, and so that he can think about all the details of the case he's learned and piece some sort of puzzle in how to fix the problem and close the case. Odd I'm going for these tough guy characters.
I'm still not sure how to feel about a white man writing about black topics. And how could I as a white person possibly be able to judge? But still, I loved the atmosphere in this book. It's all dark, very dark, and comes with a lot of triggers warnings. It comes with racism, it comes with alcohol, it comes with sexism. It's an uncomfortable book, but that's Lehane writing here.

Written in 1971, I can definitely see how influential this novel must have been on many of the recent noir revival in American crime. Fizzing with witty dialogue this is the story of how Eddie is at the centre of gun running for various criminal gangs, including those involved in cross state border bank heists, while there is also ref to black panthers and hippy gangs. The book also features fbi officers hunting the crims. Short but v satisfying
On any given day in 1919, Babe Ruth, whose observing background presence is the best part of the story, can hit a ball to the sky. He can also strike out. The lives of characters here can change in the flash of a gun, the birth of a child, the spreading of sickness, a sudden trade. Hope, however, begins with arrival in a new home, a city that itself is arriving in a new era, where despite the world‘s present ugliness, anything seems possible.
Absolutely beautiful in its character development. I wish it had been longer. This has been the summer of Ann Patchett for me. I‘m so glad I finally got on board!
Meet the O'Briens. There's Rosie and Joe plus their four adult children. JJ, Patrick, Meghan and Katie. Each character is individual and vibrant, the sibling relationships are hilarious and heartbreaking, the parent / children dynamics are raw, real, relatable.
Genova took me on a journey of science with well thought out characters which is assessable to my non medically trained brain and all the while breaking my heart.
An exceptional book.
This is my 7th Patchett, and I have loved all but one of them (State of Wonder). This one read a bit like an Anne Tyler, another favourite author.
An accident is the catalyst for a story of grief, love and separated family. The novel takes place over 24 hours, with Ann embodying each character at different times to develop the story. Bravo 👏😭❤️
