The Testaments: A Novel | Margaret Atwood

The 2019 #booker shortlist was announced today. Sadly, the two I was rooting for, Lost Children Archive and Frankisstein, did not make the cut. #booker2019

Have you read any of these finalists?

Ruthiella I‘m using people I follow on goodreads be my guide as to what I should ultimately try first. I am interested in reading the Shafik however . I‘ve never read anything from her but have been curious for a while. 5mo
BarbaraBB I have read none of these and I am so disappointed that Lost Children Archive didn‘t make the shortlist. 5mo
Redwritinghood I‘ve read 7 of the 13 on the longlist. These are the 6 I didn‘t get to yet. I‘m also sad about LCA not making the shortlist. 5mo

mklong I've read the Shafak and Evaristo, and am currently reading both Ellman and Rushdie. I have liked all of them, Shafak probably being the weakest of the bunch for me, but was really disappointed that Lost Children Archive and Lanny both missed out! I'm excited to read The Testaments next week though. 5mo
Severnmeadows Loved Girl, Woman, Other! 5mo
thebluestocking @Ruthiella That‘s my approach too. I may not read any of the shortlist for a while. 💙 5mo
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB I‘m right in the middle of LCA right now and am really loving it. Adoring it really. We‘ll see tomorrow whether it wins #camptob. 5mo
thebluestocking @Redwritinghood Oh man! That‘s rotten luck. What is your favorite from the ones you‘ve read? 5mo
thebluestocking @mklong Wow! That‘s amazing progress. I‘ve heard really good things about Lanny too. 5mo
thebluestocking @Severnmeadows Good to know! I haven‘t heard a lot about that one. 5mo
Redwritinghood @thebluestocking Probably Night Boat. I also thought Lost Children and the Levy book were excellent. 5mo
thebluestocking @Redwritinghood Thank you! I‘ll keep an eye out for those. 💙 5mo
BarbaraBB I so hope it will! 5mo
andrew61 I've only read girl woman other and liked it a lot. I've reserved Orchestra of minorities but now sure how many others ill read. 5mo
thebluestocking @andrew61 Yes! Another pro-vote for GWO. 💙 5mo

Pickpick

I read this for #camptob even though I‘m not really following along. I was hooked quickly and really liked the main character. I also thought it was a cool mash-up of spy thriller and literary fiction but what I enjoyed most was the detail regarding Burkina Faso and Thomas Sankara, which I knew very little about. The ending was slightly unsatisfying but I still recommend it.

July Wrap-Up🎉🎉🎉. Tagged book was my only 5⭐️ read of the month. 4⭐️ for Dutch Girl, American Spy, and Princess Bari. The rest were 3⭐️. Gotta live a month with no duds! 8 books, 2 nonfiction, 2 in translation (from Korean and Swedish), 3 #camptob, 2 ARC/Galley, 4 by women, 5 diverse reads. #wrapup #monthlywrapup #julywrapup

Mehso-so

So I managed to read this entire thing—all 600+ pages. It was fine. I don‘t love fantasy, and this book is full of witches, shape shifters, trolls, etc. You find out some things, there is lots of violence, and it all sort of circles back around to the beginning. Just not my thing. #camptob #tournamentofbooks #fantasy

Pickpick

Finished the last of the #camptob books for tournament of books and I thought this was pretty good. It is largely set in Burkina Faso and Martinique, two countries I have not yet had the chance to read books from, and I always enjoy learning more about places. Despite the alternating time periods and the fact that it is a spy novel, it's a pretty slow burn. I set it aside a few times to read other things but was ultimately glad I came back to it.

I finished the book over the weekend (sitting in one of the chairs in the pic) but I had to sit with it a few days. It took me awhile to get into it, pretty much until the POV change I think. I can‘t say I “enjoyed” most of it but it was very powerful and the elegies of the Lost Children were just heartbreaking. A very timely novel and I wish some of the people who support the detention centers would read it. #campToB

AlaMich That is a lovely picture! 6mo
Rachel_nyc @AlaMich Thanks! It was taken on a friend‘s farm in Vermont. Such a relaxing trip. 6mo
BarbaraBB Great review. I am starting this one now and will keep it in mind if I find it hard to get through! 6mo

Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB I can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on this one! 6mo
Suet624 Exactly how I felt after finishing the book. The TOB did a great discussion on it if you‘re interested. I‘m in VT. What part did you visit? 6mo
Rachel_nyc @Suet624 I need to go back and read the TOB discussions. I have read most of the books (not the James novel and just started American Spy) but was always a bit behind. I spent a few days in North Pomfret on a farm which is where this photo was taken (close to the border of NH) and then Stowe. It is so beautiful up there! 6mo
Suet624 I live 20 minutes from Stowe. If you come again, let‘s meet up! 6mo
Rachel_nyc @Suet624 Yes! I was visiting friends of friends but we discussed possibly going back in the Fall. I‘m sure it is absolutely gorgeous that time of year! 6mo
Suet624 It sure is. 😍😍 6mo

A little gimmicky, but this novel is the perfect beach, poolside, or airplane read. It‘s fast, easy, and pulls you forward. This is the story (in interview format) of a fake 70s band based in Los Angeles. #camptob #tournamentofbooks

It‘s lines like this that have me wanting to continue but at 30% in, I just do not care about this family at all! I love the idea of this book but I want more of a balance between the family and the “lost children” that I thought would be the focus of this novel. I‘ve heard enough good things that I want to keep going but I only have a few days left before the library snatches it back. Deciding whether to continue or set aside for now.

Cathythoughts I just got it ... only read the kindle sample , but I‘m looking forward to it 👍🏻♥️ 6mo
Rachel_nyc @Cathythoughts Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! 6mo
Ruthiella I think this book is more a thought exercise than a novel. I appreciated it for how it made me consider current US politics. 6mo

Rachel_nyc @Ruthiella I think that‘s a great way to describe it. I am still parsing through my feelings but I am glad I read it, even if I didn‘t necessarily enjoy it. 6mo
BarbaraBB I am somehow not looking forward to it but I will read this one soon. It probably wins #CampToB and shall be shortlisted for the #Bookerprize I expect... 6mo
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB I suspect you‘re correct. I still need to write my review but while I didn‘t love it, I‘m glad I read it. 6mo
