A mesmerizing novel of two sisters on a Pacific Northwest island whose lives are upended by an unexpected visitora tale of family, obsession, and a mysterious creature in the woods, by the celebrated, bestselling author of Disappearing Earth. They were sisters and they would last past the end of time. Sam and her sister, Elena, dream of another life. On the island off the coast of Washington where they were born and raised, they and their mother struggle to survive. Sam works long days on the ferry that delivers wealthy mainlanders to their vacation homes while Elena bartends at the local golf club, but even together they can't earn enough to get by, stirring their frustration about the limits that shape their existence. Then one night on the boat, Sam spots a bear swimming the dark waters of the channel. Where is it going? What does it want? When the bear turns up by their home, Sam, terrified, is more convinced than ever that it's time to leave the island. But Elena responds differently to the massive beast. Enchanted by its presence, she throws into doubt the plan to escape and puts their long-held dream in danger. A story about the bonds of sisterhood and the mysteries of the animals that live among usand within usBear is a propulsive, mythical, rich novel from one of the most acclaimed young writers in America.

Another great #camplitsy24 pick that I would not have read on my own. Two sisters trying to better their lives while feeling stuck on their island and taking care of their sick mother. Then a bear shows up. You can kind of guess where it‘s going but I still was enthralled and entertained. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BarbaraBB Glad you loved it. I am reading it right now. 16h
AmyG I just started this and am really enjoying it. Happy to read your high praise! 16h
Megabooks Yay! Glad you loved it! 16h
squirrelbrain Hooray - that sounds promising! 13h
Clare-Dragonfly Sounds like the fairy tale Rose-White and Rose-Red! Are there similarities beyond the sisters and mother struggling and then a bear shows up? 9h

I might‘ve gone a bit crazy with the book buying recently! Of course, I got Bear for #CampLitsy24🏕️ plus 2 other #botm AND 2 from #aardvark.

The remainder are from Amazon. Long Island was a preorder, but most others were from the 3 for the price of 2 deal. I‘ve almost finished Martyr!, which #CampToB is discussing right now. It‘s a #LikeNotLove for me. I‘m reading Jackpot Summer, too, and it‘s cute and light. 🏖️

marleed There‘s been an abundance of great book releases this summer! 1w
Susanita That‘s some nice composition! 1w
JamieArc I‘ve been on a book buying spree lately too 🫣. Here‘s hoping I actually read some of them soon! 1w

Bookwormjillk It seems like there were so many good new releases this summer! I‘m reading Lion Women now and like it. Also liked Long Island. 1w
squirrelbrain Ooh, some great books there! 1w
BarbaraBB Great stack! I have been buying a lot of books too, prepping for Japan 🤦🏻‍♀️. I‘ll share my stack later this week 😃 1w
TheLudicReader Book buying is the best kind of “crazy” there is! 1w
Megabooks @marleed @bookwormjillk Agree! Lots of good books this summer. Even more authors I love coming up in the fall, too. 1w
Megabooks @Susanita Thanks! I need to power wash the porch, but otherwise I'm happy with the photo. 😂 1w
Megabooks @JamieArc That's the flip side of the coin -- getting around to reading them! 1w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I'm excited to read them over the summer! 👏 1w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB oooo...can't wait to get a look at that stack! 1w

Sam and Elena are struggling 20-something sisters on San Juan island, trying to make ends meet as their mother is dying. Then one day, a bear is sighted when there typically aren‘t any on the island. Each sister has a different reaction to the animal. I liked this but I don‘t think it was as unique or special as her first book. I suspected from early on where it was going, but that didn‘t alter my enjoyment of it.

sarahbarnes I just finished her first book and really liked it. I‘m looking forward to this one. 2w
BarbaraBB So glad it‘s a pick for you. So far I‘ve only read mixed reviews and I want to like it like I did 2w
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I loved Disappearing Earth. This book is quite different. It‘s good but it isn‘t special in the way that one was. I think you have to approach this as its own thing and not expect DE. This was quite good but suffers in the comparison. 2w
BarbaraBB That‘s good to know, thanks!! 2w

I managed to get on the hold list for this as soon as my library said they would be getting a copy, so I listened to it early. I enjoyed the descriptive writing, but I just kept waiting for Sam to give people more of a chance or more to happen until close to the end.

📷: I listened to part of this as I took a walk along the creek with Luthien this morning.

#audiobook #CampLitsy24

Graciouswarriorprincess I received an arc of it and am looking forward to reading it. 2w
Megabooks Gorgeous creek! I loved her debut, so I‘m hopeful about this, but I‘ll temper my expectations. 2w
Daisey @Graciouswarriorprincess @Megabooks @BarbaraBB It‘s hard for me to specify more clearly what I disliked without spoilers, but I tend to need characters I like or at least can relate to in a way. I had a really hard time with the character of Sam in this book. I‘m so curious to see more reviews. 2w
Graciouswarriorprincess @Daisey I can understand that about the characters as I am the same. 2w

I‘m so proud that I didn‘t peak at the numbers this morning before posting my list 🫣😆. July‘s #Bookspin list features books I need to get through (so sorry @KateReadsYA but I WILL get through Slewfoot soon!), #CampLitsy24 reads, lots of summer vibes, and a Christmas cozy because comfort is a top priority right now!

JamieArc @KateReadsYA Slewfoot is picking up for me, and I‘ll be sitting in a chair for a hair appointment for 3 hours this afternoon so I anticipate lots of progress! Thanks for your patience 😊 3w

I‘m glad I have both Aardvark and BOTM because this month, none of Aardvark‘s choices grabbed me while too many of BOTM‘s did. I think I was craving summer vibes. Really excited to see Bear, as I was hoping it would be a #CampLitsy24 pick.

Megabooks Yes, I‘m happy to see Bear, too! 3w
AmyG Great books! 3w
BarbaraBB Would they notice an unusual amount of Bear ordered?! 3w

JamieArc @BarbaraBB Good question. Though I feel like Bear is not what the average BOTM subscriber goes for. From the polls I saw, most did not choose it. 3w
BarbaraBB Somehow I am glad about that haha, it shows our obscure taste 😉 3w

Despite the feeling of being a tourist or anthropologist reading about close-knit familial relationships and the a-little-too-extended ending, I really enjoyed this novel. I love the flow of Phillips's writing, and the way the characters veer along their poorly chosen paths had me reading with my hands over my eyes (figuratively). #CampLitsy24

BarbaraBB This is the first review of this book I come upon. It sounds good! So glad we‘ve chosen it for #CampLitsy24! 3w
ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB I got the audiobook on preorder through libro.fm, and I couldn't wait to start it. I definitely enjoyed it, and I'm interested to see what comes up in the discussion (although I have trouble following discussions in comments so I tend not to comment). 3w

I don‘t think I‘ve ever been first in line on Libby right off the bat for a newly published book!

I was worried I wouldn‘t get my #CampLitsy24 books in time—but instead I‘ve had the opposite problem: everything is coming in early. I just started James and it‘s due back on 7/9. Oh, the capricious timing of library holds—I guess early is better than late!!

squirrelbrain Definitely better earlier than late…. Not even sure I‘ll get hold of it in time here in the UK…and I‘m hosting! 🤦‍♀️ 4w
TrishB @squirrelbrain it‘s looking unlikely isn‘t it! 4w
squirrelbrain @TrishB - I‘ve ordered a copy on Amazon and it‘s currently saying delivery on 17th July. I keep looking elsewhere for it but no luck! 4w

squirrelbrain Thanks for promoting me Barbara and @TrishB - just found a copy on eBay for delivery next week. Trish - you might be able to get a copy too as it said more than 10 copies. 4w
TrishB @squirrelbrain will keep an eye out as still quite expensive! Why isn‘t there a kindle version 🤷‍♀️ 4w
Megabooks Glad you‘re able to get a copy so easily! 4w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @TrishB yikes! I hope we‘re able to get participation from UK/Europe because it wouldn‘t be the same camp! Come on affordability!! 4w
Kitta Oh wow! I‘m 76th in line for James but there‘s 169 copies in use! Fingers crossed I get it this week. This is through the Manhattan public library and almost 1000 people are waiting in line for it! 4w
BarbaraJean @Kitta Libby is doing that guilt-trip thing with me on the copy of James I have checked out—it‘s telling me there are 13 people waiting for that copy. Well, they‘re gonna have to wait, Libby! I‘ve got 11 more days on my loan and Camp Litsy discussions on my calendar!! (edited) 3w

Just went into the BOTM app and noticed that they added hints for July (hoping The God of the Woods is one of them). Did I miss some of these extras last month or are these new? Looks like one of our August #camplitsy books is an extra! #BOTM

Well, #CampLitsy, I've only gotten through the B's on the longlist & there are already 5 books I want to vote for. This is going to be a *process.* 😅

I'm so excited about the tagged, though, which I didn't nominate and which I am ABSOLUTELY selecting. I loved Disappearing Earth so much and I didn't realize she had a new book coming! Thanks to the nominator!

Bookwormjillk I think that‘s a must for me too! 3mo
jlhammar I also loved Disappearing Earth so can‘t wait for Bear. This is going to be impossible! 3mo
squirrelbrain It‘s so difficult to choose isn‘t it?! I ended up with 28 books on my first round of highlighting. 3mo

ChaoticMissAdventures I am planning on taking allllll week to the very last day to vote. There are so many options! 3mo
monalyisha @ChaoticMissAdventures That sounds like a healthy and reasonable plan! I'll probably just hyperfixate all morning while drinking endless cups of coffee. 😉 3mo
squirrelbrain So funny that you have entirely opposite approaches to this! @monalyisha @ChaoticMissAdventures 3mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain monalyisha I easily get “Overwhelmed paralysis“ or what I wlike to call, “This is too much I am taking a nap Syndrome“ LOL I took one look at the list and went and took a walk 😂 😂 I am so cuper excited though! My TBR is already growing. 3mo
monalyisha @ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain What was it that Tolstoy said? “All obsessive readers are obsessive in their own way“? 3mo
BarbaraBB I love this! I was super hyped too! I am still in the midst of narrowing it down! But Bear will definitely get my vote (I was one of the people norminating it!) 3mo
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures I love your approach too and how in real life I know no one who would react to a longlist like we do, in all our different ways. And that is what I love about Litsy 🩵 @squirrelbrain 3mo
monalyisha @squirrelbrain After making my way through the whole list, I've got 24. I wondered how near my number would be to yours! I'm going to pause for a little road trip but I'm both looking forward to and dreading narrowing it down later. 😊 3mo
Megabooks I'm so excited for Bear as well. I've signed up to see her on book tour at Parnassus! 🎉 🎉 🎉 Glad you're enjoying the longlist. 3mo
