This book had me ugly crying but with happiness at the end. I borrowed it from the school library where I work. Such an important book for children to show them empathy and respect for the animal world. It‘s heartbreaking because a lot of it is true.

“I am Ivan, just Ivan, only Ivan“

I loved this book as a kid! I think students would enjoy learning about Ivan and his challenges. I could also pair it with the movie.

Historical fiction, 2012. Ivan has spent most of his life in a small cage, along with other animals, including an elephant named Stella and a young elephant named Ruby. The novel explores Ivan's thoughts, memories, and relationships as he reflects on his life in the mall, where he has been part of a display for human entertainment.

"Sometimes, I want to tear the walls down and run free."

This is a great choice for sparking discussions about empathy and the importance of freedom in the classroom. Its engaging narrative encourages students to explore themes of friendship and resilience through meaningful activities and reflections.

"The One and Only Ivan" by Katherine Applegate tells the touching story of Ivan, a silverback gorilla living in a mall. Through his eyes, we see the importance of friendship and the longing for freedom. Applegate's simple yet powerful writing makes Ivan‘s journey both heartwarming and thought-provoking. It's a beautiful reminder of compassion and hope.
