Loved this look at the toxicity famous women faced in what she calls the “upskirt decade” from 1999 to 2013. It was a time of upheaval in how celebrity news was covered and privacy rights. She writes about Amy Winehouse and WWE‘s Chyna‘s descent into addiction and death. She covers the sexualization of Britney and Lindsay, and Paris and Kim‘s sex tapes. She also looks in on the impact of older stars Janet Jackson and Jen Aniston. Highly recommend!

squirrelbrain Oh sounds great! Stacking, although I definitely don‘t need any more books! 🤣 1mo
squirrelbrain Damn! Just went on Amazon to see when the paperback is coming out (ages away) and the hardback is (c8, so I bought it! ?‍♀️ I‘ve been working solid all weekend (and Easter too) so I reckon I deserve it. Even if it languishes on the shelf until after the paperback comes out. ? 1mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain it‘s totally worth (c8!! And of course you deserve it!! ? 1mo

I‘m struggling to articulate this one. Important; intersectional; staunchly anti capitalist and decolonial. I‘m in agreement with much of the book. A lot of it is very academic in language, and very French in its history covered but not inaccessible. A summary could be single issues will not win in struggles for equality, decolonisation must be strived for and respectability politics is futile. I need to read some fiction to feel less glum now.

Some helpful info in here but also several things you‘ll probably just toss to the side. Certainly worth reading and taking what works.

Last night, we went to see “Once Upon A One More Time” - a new Broadway musical where all the songs are Britney Spears hits. The plot centered around Cinderella, Snow White, & other princesses attempting to write their own happy ever after after reading Friedan‘s book (not kidding). Cindy‘s Fairy Godmother was Betty herself. A fever dream but incredibly fun! 💖😂✨🫶🏻🪩🧚🏻‍♀️

Both these items were sold at the merch booth. 🙌🏻 💪🏻

100 years ago today … This is one of the many reasons why feminism continues to be relevant and important. There are women still alive who were born before it was legal for them to wear pants in public.

ChaoticMissAdventures I saw a few articles this year about graduates not being able to walk in the ceremony because as women they were wearing pants. Sometimes I have to wonder how far we have really come. 11mo
Amiable @ChaoticMissAdventures You aren‘t wrong. It really does feel like one step forward three steps back in regards to women‘s rights. 11mo

Updated #14books14weeks2023 list
Next week! How did it come so fast.
I am working on getting some of the oldest books off my TBR bookcase. I have had some of these for seriously maybe a decade. Why have I not read them?

@TheHeartlandBookFairy

TheHeartlandBookFairy Excellent question! I have the same problem but no answer LOL. 11mo

This biography has provoked so many memories for me regarding my own separation from the Catholic Church & my own dawning feminism. Rich writes that “Daly‘s new book [Beyond God the Father: Towards a Philosophy of Women‘s Liberation] was the greatest feminist treatise since The Second Sex.”(Simone De Beauvoir) I experienced a rude awakening when I was a freshman of the first full class of women at a previously all male Catholic college. 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼I called looking for the phone number of a nearby college‘s clinic. The college was not prepared to treat specifically female issues. They did not provide it & the next thing i knew I got a call from the Dean‘s office wanting know why I needed the clinic. I got the impression they thought I was pregnant. I did not reveal why. Instead I called my dad & he sent what I needed ( just RX for yeast infection) & mailed it to me.🔽 13mo
kspenmoll 🔼we also faced some( definitely not all, a minority really) men who followed us calling out disgusting names, & professors who also did not want women these. During college & after I was introduced to Mary Daly & read Two of her books. Reading about Rich has sent me down memory lane in positive ways- to return to my early influences.❤️ 13mo

TheBookHippie OHMYWORD. And my early fights in High School as an activist and being underground women‘s health has been flashing through my memory … also your dad ♥️. It‘s amazing when you look at a scope of a life. Yours and mine included. It‘s just phew… 13mo
jlhammar Just wow. I haven‘t read Daly yet. Sounds good. 13mo
SamAnne I was in college in the mid-80s and was introduced to Rich, Daly, etc. This bio is bringing up a lot of memories for me too. 13mo

There were an embarrassing number of women in music that I didn‘t know about. Here they are: Alexina Louie, Gaelynn Lea, Isabella Colbran, Jada Watson, Kassia, Mary Youngblood, Odetta, Quilla, Selena, Tanya Tagaq, Ulali, Valerie Capers, Wendy Melvoin, Xian Zhang, Yuja Wang, and Zenobia Powell Perry.

I'm glad I read this book. It was a long one, some parts were a bit outdated, some were a little weird (the comparisons to the Holocaust, for example), but many were very interesting and valuable. I loved Friedan's critique of Freud.
Also, though the situation was very different in Hungary in the 1960s, the book is eerily relevant in my country today, with the current government's family policy.

RedCurly Imádtam ezt a könyvet 💟 1y
