Fight Like A Girl
Fight Like A Girl | Clementine Ford
'With wit, insight and glorious, righteous rage, Clementine Ford lays out all the ways in which girls and women are hurt and held back, and unapologetically demands that the world do better. A passionate and urgently needed call to arms, Fight Like A Girl insists on our right to be angry, to be heard and to fight. It'll change lives.' Emily Maguire, author of An Isolated Incident A friend recently told me that the things I write are powerful for her because they have the effect of making her feel angry instead of just empty. I want to do this for all women and young girls - to take the emptiness and numbness they feel about being a girl in this world and turn it into rage and power. I want to teach all of them how to FIGHT LIKE A GIRL. Clementine Ford Online sensation, fearless feminist heroine and scourge of trolls and misogynists everywhere, Clementine Ford is a beacon of hope and inspiration to thousands of Australian women and girls. Her incendiary debut Fight Like A Girl is an essential manifesto for feminists new, old and soon-to-be, and exposes just how unequal the world continues to be for women. Crucially, it is a call to arms for all women to rediscover the fury that has been suppressed by a society that still considers feminism a threat. Fight Like A Girl will make you laugh, cry and scream. But above all it will make you demand and fight for a world in which women have real equality and not merely the illusion of it.

Just walked home from the last evening of the Newcastle Writer‘s Festival. Oh how I ❤️ a writer‘s festival. My brain is full of new ideas. I didn‘t buy any books! Hard to pick a favourite but Helen Garner was very entertaining. Clementine Ford is nothing like the media portrays her. If I do buy a book as a result of this festival it will be Inga Simpson‘s The Last Woman in the World. She read a passage from it and I need to know what happens next.

MrsMalaprop Oh how fabulous. It looked like a wonderful line-up. 😍 2y

#WeeklyForecast

Most of my picks for the week are nonfiction, hoping to finish strong for #NFNov.

I bailed on Scrappy Little Nobody earlier this fall with the plan to go back to it when I was in the right mood. I am now!

bullbunny Oh really? Scrappy little Nobody was one of the first autobiographies I actually enjoyed! Maybe it will work out this time around 4y
alisiakae @bullbunny I actually really liked it, but Radium Girls came off my hold shelf at the same time, so I switched to that. We watched the Noelle movie this week, which reminded me I needed to go back to Kendrick‘s memoir! 4y
Cinfhen I read her memoir a few years back and she was very relatable 💕 4y
CarolynM I'll be interested to see what you think about Clementine Ford. 4y

#BFC wk 2 I finished my first book but I didn‘t go to pilates as I was away at a Professional Development course in reading and working memory which was fantastic. Afterwards I went to the op shop not far from the school & got all of these goodies for under $20. This wk I went over my minimum of yoga and stretching sessions, I kept my wine drinking in check & went for my walk so I‘m definitely on the up. I commented on 10 individual posts. 42 +10=

A really engaging book that weaves together Ford‘s personal experiences and wider issues with Australian society. I really liked the chapters on rape culture and the language that goes into silencing women. She also presents a meaningful analysis of why women hesitate to identify as feminist.

Another fantastic book from feminist Clementine Ford.
Quote: ‘Why is the measure of a mans worth meant to be the size of his integrity while the measure of a woman‘s is the size of her waist?‘

I really wanted to love this book as I really admire the author. She has faced some of the most horrendous online trolling I‘ve ever seen. Her responses are priceless. This book makes some incredibly important points. However, I just didn‘t really like the way it was written. It was a bit repetitive and just didn‘t grab me. Saying that 2 chapters really stood out. ‘The good guys‘ and ‘When will you learn‘ are spot on and really worth reading

I was going to get my daughter to put on her Melbourne Rebels hat and scarf to be a Rebel Girl but Clementine Ford is a better choice. I admire her outspokenness and her resilience in standing up to the vile attacks to which she has been subjected.

tif This is one of my favourite books 6y
CarolynM @tif I haven't got around to reading it yet, but based on her newspaper articles and social media posts I'm sure it will be worth the time. I just need to be in the right mood. 6y

Fortuitous that this pic popped up in my FB memories from one year ago today.

Clementine Ford fights back against the patriarchy, abuse and rape culture (among others) pulling no punches in her assessment of women's experiences in Australia. There's a lot that resonated strongly with me, there were some frightening realisations of just how insidious this stuff is and there's an awful lot to be angry about. This was a powerful read.

Clementine Ford is considered to be an "outspoken" feminist by a lot of Aussies, and when my local indie bookstore tweeted in support of her new book about toxic masculinity, they found themselves at the centre of a targeted campaign by a "men's rights" group. The group posted 247 negative reviews of the store, but the store's supporters came out in their droves posting an additional 2500 ish positive reviews.

Re-reading bits of this for a book club discussion on Monday. Chapter Seven: The Belle Jar. 😍 😥💪Bloody brilliant.

Jeg So much in this book. Each chapter could be a book club discussion on its own. I've given the book away to several people who have said they found it hard to get into. Must go back and tell them just to read one chapter at a time and rest! 😊 7y

It was so good! Ford has this dry sense of humour and I loved hearing her narrate the book, because she put so much emotion into it. It made me angry, sad, smile and rage.

I was pre-disposed to liking this book. I've followed Clem and her writings since she was a columnist in Adelaide, and it is only infrequently that I don't wholeheartedly agree with her. Bonus: this made me remember many cringe-worthy things I said and did as a teen, in the hope of being accepted by society. We've all been there; it wasn't pretty.

This is the book How To Be A Woman wishes it was.
