This book did not live up to the #goldenbooker hype for me. Well-crafted writing but not enough heart. #bookerprize #1001books
I‘m about to start this book that just won the #goldenbooker. It‘s been sitting on my shelf forever because #worstcoverever. Finally checked out the kindle version from the library and will donate the book with the terrible cover!
Ordering this book I wasn‘t aware that I ordered author‘s revised edition, and that the original (awarded) book was collection of three short stories. My edition have only one - In a Free State which is set in Africa, in unnamed state that has recently acquired independence. The tension between white and black residents is described in a very tangible way, and I think that this is the strongest part of the story. #goldenBooker
A superb story with the main theme about the perceiving general history which is shaped by personal intimate memories, and this is the story of a woman on her deathbed who, while pondering about her life, writes her history of the world. Captivating story, a complex structure, challenging characters and elegant prose - all you need in a good book. #GoldenBooker
The story takes place right after the end of the WWII in, ironical - peaceful Italian villa around four people, each carrying and pondering about painful memories/losses and sadness, what takes us to different periods of time and places. I think that this very thoughtful, dynamic structure is the strongest point of this story, besides the rich and sensual prose. I don‘t love it, but I like it enough (despite very forced end) that is pick for me.
This is my second reading of this book and my opinion remains the same – an interesting construction, a sad story... I understand the enthusiasm around that book, but it wasn‘t for me. This time I listened to the audiobook which was also unique experience. Without prior knowledge, this story would be without meaning for me, and therefore - a bow to all of you who only listened to the audiobook and love it. #GoldenBooker
My first Hilary Mantel book. I hope I love it. I'm going in ❣
The story where intrigues take place for #EightDaysAWeek is very rich, broad-based and with focus on Thomas Cromwell, which is presented this time more positively than in any other book. The story is packed with all kind of details, subjects, characters, dialogues... and author has managed to connect all this in an excellent, very fluent story about power.

Cromwell is also some kind of #UnderdogHero at least in the first book. #booked2018
