Folks, you're in for a treat in the spring. The Secrets of Hartwood Hall by Katie Lumsden is so, so good. I started it last night and am half way through (after staying up way too late). With beautiful evocative writing, it's intriguing, unusual, with gothic mystery and brilliant characterisation. A widowed governess, a lonely little boy, house full of secrets. I have no idea where it's going

Three Gothic Novels | Peter Fairclough

1. That's a tough question - favourites are psychological thrillers & magical realism as well, but I think eerie gothic novels win.

2. The last half! I need to know the ending - I can make up the backstories that lead up to it.

Just finished rereading Mary Shelley‘s classic Frankenstein and loved it as much as the first time!! It‘s so beautifully written I could go on reading for another 200 pages! And I‘m not even a fan of gothic literature. Forget your prejudice stemming from movie adaptations and comics. This tale is fantastic. I highly recommend that you give it a chance! #maryshelley #frankenstein #classic #fiction #horror #gothicnovel #1818 #alchemy #switzerland

LaraReads I love this! Your enthusiasm is catching!! 💕📚🤓 5y
Palimpsest Great review. I agree the book is really nothing like the movie versions. I‘d read it for the themes of the sublime alone. 5y

Starting my next chronological gothic novel. I have never read any of Ann Radcliffe's novels so this should interesting. I'm going to count this for February, but getting a start on it now since it's a longer novel and I'm reading it on #serialreader.

New Ruth Ware ft.s a tarot reader who answers a mistaken summons to collect on an estate that she isn't entitled to after the death of someone she doesn't know 💀☠️ She thinks she's going to pull off a master con, but then things turn ⚰️🕯️ This is gonna be an amazing contemporary gothic featuring a creepy house & you know I love that shit!

I picked this one up because I needed to read a #GothicNovel for #AroundTheYearIn52Books and I knew it had been influential to Austen when writing Northanger Abbey. As this was all I knew of the novel I decided to Google its plot and found this character description in Wikipedia. The last line is priceless.
