David Markovits is Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at Yale University and director of the Yale Center for the Study of Private Law. This interesting but infuriating book convincingly argues that the USA‘s middle classes are locked out of opportunities to advance to the professions and elite education and the elite are forming a self-perpetuating clique but relies on such a narrow view of meritocracy that I was unconvinced by the propose solutions

A small number of people and institutions control most of the world‘s wealth. Yes, the world. Phillips reveals how they are interconnected and details the systems they use to protect and grow their fortunes. While the book can be dry at times, especially when listing wealth managers, their biographies, or major corporations, it remains highly insightful in showing how wealth enables individuals and corporations to achieve their aims.

julieclair Did it make you sad? Angry? Frustrated? I‘m interested in reading this, but I‘m not sure I‘m up for it right now. So I‘m wondering how you felt… 5mo

TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair The first 1/4 or so made me so depressed I wanted to vomit from hopelessness. But as I read on, I felt more thoughtful and hopeful. Some of my initial reaction has a bit of a personal bend to it. Hope that helps 😊 5mo

Deblovestoread It is so good, I learned a ton. 5mo
TheBookgeekFrau @Deblovestoread The learning is real!! 5mo
ncsufoxes Lawmakers should have this as required reading, maybe they‘d have better insights into what many people in the US face 5mo

TheBookgeekFrau @ncsufoxes Agreed!!! Though part of me thinks they either wouldn't believe, or are laughing even louder all the way to the bank. 5mo
KadaGul During grad school, I read and wrote a paper about "Evicted," which explores the housing issues in some struggling neighborhoods in Milwaukee. I really enjoyed the research process and put lots of effort into making the information engaging and interesting. The author pours his heart into the writing, which makes the topic hit home even harder! 5mo
TheBookgeekFrau @KadaGul He really does! I've added Evicted to my wish list. 5mo

This short book taught me so much about our “democracy”. I did find myself losing focus at times & thought it was a little weird in how it was written. Afterward, I realized that‘s because it‘s written from interviews Chomsky did, so that‘s why it‘s more casual in its tone. Enlightening for me though & only about 4 hours in audio format.

#12Booksof2024 February

Choosing a book didn‘t get any easier for February, but since I highlighted a fiction book in January I thought I should highlight a nonfiction in February

Other honorable mentions are: Christmas at the Beach Hut by Veronica Henry, The Swifts by Beth Lincoln and The Strangeworld Travel Agency by L. D. Lapinski

Andrew65 Poverty is something we shouldn‘t need to discuss in the mid 21st century but is a growing problem due to the greed of corporations. (edited) 11mo
AnneCecilie @Andrew65 I couldn‘t agree with you more. This book looks at the mechanisms that keep people poor 11mo
Andrew65 @AnneCecilie That greed seems to get worse by the year! 11mo

#AuldLangSpine #2024

💙 I read 8 off this fantastic list from @Christine this year and have a few more on my TBR. My favorite Fiction was All the Sinners Bleed and nonfiction Finding Me but all 8 were excellent.

And as inspired by @Amiable my favorites from past years:

2020. @Jerdencon We Were the Lucky Ones
2021 MadDashReading The Glass Hotel
2022 @thewallflower0707 The Book of Longings (F) & All the Young Men (NF)
2023 @Amiable ⬇️

Deblovestoread Count the Ways (F) & The Family Roe (NF). I can‘t state enough how much I love this “swap”, so many wonderful books I might not have found on my own. So my thanks to you all for enriching my reading life. 💙💙💙 (edited) 11mo
Deblovestoread I‘ve had trouble all year tagging Christine and can‘t again today so I hope you see this. And I think MadDashReading has a new handle but I can‘t remember it so if someone does would you mind reminding me and tag her in the comments? Thanks! 💙 11mo
monalyisha @Deblovestoread I‘ve been using my desktop computer to tag Christine (she‘s my match this year, as well). 😅 It works if you search her last name in conjunction with her first. I don‘t think it‘s possible on the app, though! 11mo

Deblovestoread @monalyisha Thanks for the full name tip! 11mo
Amiable @Deblovestoread I‘m so happy to hear that you enjoyed several of my picks —and I totally agree with your comment about the discovery of fabulous books we might not have found on our own! 11mo
Christine Oh yay, this is such a thrill to read!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙 Wasn't Finding Me incredible?? I kind of want to reread it right now. BUT, I won't be doing that, in part because I'm going to sneak in a few more from your list before the end of the year and am so excited to do so!!! 11mo
Christine And ugh, my evil username strikes again!!! 🤣 I'm sorry! I had no idea what I was doing when I (lazily) chose it. (And yes, searching for Christine Crofts works when tagging, I think - thanks @monalyisha !). 11mo
Christine Now I'm very curious to see @Amiable 's current and previous year lists, too! 😁 I don't know if I'll get to The Family Roe in 2024 but absolutely will eventually! 11mo
Amiable @Christine Email me at AmyBF45@ gmail.com and I‘ll send you the list I compiled for my swap partner this year! 11mo
Christine @Amiable You are so sweet! Emailing now! :) 11mo
Megabooks What a great list! I highly recommend An Immense World. I still think about it daily. 11mo
Amiable @Christine Sent you an email -- sorry it's so ... um...excessive. 😁 11mo
Christine @Amiable Not excessive in the least, and I can't wait to pore over and respond soon!! (In the throes of end-of-term grading for the five college courses I'm teaching, but the end is in sight!!) 11mo
Amiable @Christine Yikes! May the Force (of the red marking pen) be with you! 11mo
