Such an interesting concept to send out 1000 journals in the public to see what people write, draw, etc.

While the main focus is on how to draw animals, plants and landscapes (step by step instructions), the first 100 pages introduce the reader to writing about nature. The goal of nature journaling is to see, to remember and to stimulate curiosity, to move through the world with joy. Pay attention not only to the happenings in the natural world, but also to the happenings within you. Write with the goal of knowing yourself and the world better. 🥰

I am an avid journaler, but apparently an even more avid journal purchaser. At my current rate of journaling, this is 3.5-4 years' supply. I have decided that I am not allowed to buy any more journals until 2027 (unless I start using them faster and need another sooner than that).
In addition to the physical history, Roland also discusses how notebooks were used throughout history - in accounting, art, natural history, writing, etc. and various ways notebooks were perceived. I.e., in the 1200s when clergy refused to use anything other than parchment being suspicious of paper's novelty and its infidel and recycled origins: “one opponent fulminated against the idea that the word of God could be written on menses-stained rag.“
I am attending me second writing course this week. Super inspiring! Found my flow, and I am absolutely loving writing 🥰🥰
In this book Manson argues that once we stop trying to be “happy“ all the time, and instead become extremely familiar with what deeply pains us, we will discover what truly makes us happy.
I appreciated Manson's brutal honesty and his tell-it-like-it-is attitude really spoke to me. He advocates the importance of embracing our true selves in a world obsessed with perfection.

2.5/5⭐ There is some specific information for crafting a journal and drawing in it at the beginning, but the majority of the book is more for generic inspiration. Everything is basically “sit still and draw what you observe“ without much more detail. There are lots of examples with the author's notes about when she drew them. The book is more an exploration of the author's art journal than a how-to.
