The Ten Teacups | Carter Dickson
Mehso-so

Oh, infuriating, as usual with Carter Dickson/John Dickson Carr. Not a favourite, very over-engineered, though I found the footnotes pointing back to the clues an interesting touch.

The Ten Teacups | Carter Dickson

When I first read books by Carter Dickon (John Dickson Carr), I really couldn't stand them. I don't know what clicked, but I quite enjoyed the last few I read, even though they're very much over-engineered. The mystery in this one so far is definitely intriguing. 👀

I tried a murder mystery which was not written by Christie or Doyle and enjoyed it very much. I liked the idea of the locked room murder und how cheeky journalist Rouletabille tries to solve the case. There are funny scenes as well, e.g. when Rouletabille climbs a tree to eavesdrop and finds the investigating inspector already in the tree. 🤪 And halfway through the book I realized the author did write The Phantom of the Opera. 🙈

Ruthiella This is one of the classic mysteries that is on my list. 4mo
Bookwomble The Rouletabille novels are good fun. I've only found three of them in English translation, and there are five more that I really wish somebody would have a go at! 4mo
MariaW @Ruthiella It has been on my list for a long time as well. I definitely enjoyed it. 😊 4mo
MariaW @Bookwomble There only three in German as well, only two available as ebbok and the third can only be ordered as used paperback - but a zillion different version of The Phantom of the Opera. We have to learn French now, I guess. 🤣 4mo
Bookwomble @MariaW Zut alors!! More work to do! 😄 4mo

Trying to get hold of my actual book piles - yep, there‘s more than one (and more than the two ins this picture) - and the virtual ones. I am switching from one to the other.

Gissy Welcome to the ones happily trapped in a book maze📚🙌😂I hope translated right😳🤷🏽‍♀️ 5mo

This 1949 Japanese classic locked room mystery is finally translated into English! If you love Agatha Christie - you‘ll appreciate the twist at the end. It‘s short, a little traditional in parts, but overall a fun quick read.

I don‘t generally get along with impossible crime mysteries, and this was unfortunately no exception. I preferred the supernatural explanation. Also the “romance” between Rogan and Sherry made my skin crawl (which is why this is a Pan raher than a So-so).

1. If I drink something with alcohol while reading, it's in company of other people or with my boo. Gin Tonic or Espresso Martini then, mostly. Or something with Baileys...😋
2. Tagged.

Started out slow, ended with a bang. Hated most of the characters, but they made great antagonists.

An old seaside mansion. Dark gothic atmosphere. An exotic setting. Sinister locked-room mystery. Depraved and broken characters. A public prosecutor in search of the truth. Unreliable narrators.
Japan, unsettled nation during the aftermath of WWII. Multiple elaborate murders. Elegant, refined prose. An outstanding translation.
...

Yuki_Onna Continued:
Eerieness creeps through the pages like the seaside mist underlying the story.
Historical murder mystery, social commentary, character study, domestic thriller, gothic literature.
Maybe the perfect book for the perfect time exists. The Noh Mask Murder has it all.
