Be forewarned that this is not a cosy mystery. There is a lot of domestic violence and rape as well as traumatic birth covered in this book. The cover and title are misleading in their cutsieness. I liked the author's descriptive writing style, and I liked the main character very much, but the ending was overwhelming, and I felt yanked around.

DogMomIrene Yikes! Somebody in marketing has some explaining to do. Not cool! 1w
LibrarianRyan I ended up DNFing this book. I‘m glad you made it to the end. 1w
bookandbedandtea I had the same thoughts when I read it last year: it was a decent story but it was NOT AT ALL what I was expecting, and wanting, to read. 1w
LiteraryinPA Yikes! That cover is WAY off! 1w

An enjoyable thriller with good characters. The isolated situation of a stranded train added to the tension nicely.

I tried a murder mystery which was not written by Christie or Doyle and enjoyed it very much. I liked the idea of the locked room murder und how cheeky journalist Rouletabille tries to solve the case. There are funny scenes as well, e.g. when Rouletabille climbs a tree to eavesdrop and finds the investigating inspector already in the tree. 🤪 And halfway through the book I realized the author did write The Phantom of the Opera. 🙈

Ruthiella This is one of the classic mysteries that is on my list. 1mo
Bookwomble The Rouletabille novels are good fun. I've only found three of them in English translation, and there are five more that I really wish somebody would have a go at! 1mo
MariaW @Ruthiella It has been on my list for a long time as well. I definitely enjoyed it. 😊 1mo
MariaW @Bookwomble There only three in German as well, only two available as ebbok and the third can only be ordered as used paperback - but a zillion different version of The Phantom of the Opera. We have to learn French now, I guess. 🤣 1mo
Bookwomble @MariaW Zut alors!! More work to do! 😄 1mo

Trying to get hold of my actual book piles - yep, there‘s more than one (and more than the two ins this picture) - and the virtual ones. I am switching from one to the other.

Gissy Welcome to the ones happily trapped in a book maze📚🙌😂I hope translated right😳🤷🏽‍♀️ 1mo

I don‘t generally get along with impossible crime mysteries, and this was unfortunately no exception. I preferred the supernatural explanation. Also the “romance” between Rogan and Sherry made my skin crawl (which is why this is a Pan raher than a So-so).

Started out slow, ended with a bang. Hated most of the characters, but they made great antagonists.

I started this a few weeks ago but it was a bit frustrating so I dropped it for a couple other books. I had a couple hours left on it and figured “what the heck, let‘s bash it out for the finished total.” Honestly, this book is a very HARD pass. It‘s advertisement of “cozy mystery” is anything but that. With lots of abbreviated triggers (SA, R, DV, to name a few) this really fell short of coziness. A modern spin on Orient Express. 2 ⭐️

An old seaside mansion. Dark gothic atmosphere. An exotic setting. Sinister locked-room mystery. Depraved and broken characters. A public prosecutor in search of the truth. Unreliable narrators.
Japan, unsettled nation during the aftermath of WWII. Multiple elaborate murders. Elegant, refined prose. An outstanding translation.
...

Yuki_Onna Continued:
Eerieness creeps through the pages like the seaside mist underlying the story.
Historical murder mystery, social commentary, character study, domestic thriller, gothic literature.
Maybe the perfect book for the perfect time exists. The Noh Mask Murder has it all.
