This book follows the life of Tauilopepe in his Samoan village as he strives to build a great plantation. We see the lives of his son and grandson as well. It‘s terrific and gives an interesting look at Samoan village life. The end is searing.

(That‘s a banyan tree in the background of my pic. 😬)

julesG Samoan life sounds interesting, because it is so far away. I once had the pleasure of spending a few days with people from Oceania and I learned so much about the different islands and their cultures. Banyan trees remind me of Bali. Some of the old ones had red checked sashes wound around them. 2mo
Hooked_on_books @julesG The Oceania reading challenge has been fascinating because the cultures in the region are truly interconnected despite the islands being so far flung. It‘s cool, because it feels like each book builds on the others. I live not far from Hilo in Hawaii, where I took this picture, and there‘s a street there called Banyan Drive, lined with the trees. They are beautiful. 2mo
Librarybelle That is so awesome capturing the banyan tree in the picture! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2mo

Albert Wendt is a Samoan author and considered to be a giant of Oceania literature. Really interesting info about him here:

A Pattern of Islands | Arthur Grimble

Pickpick

The Gilbert and Ellice Islands were part of the British Empire from 1892 to 1976. The Gilberts include #kiribati and the Ellice Islands became #tuvalu, so I‘m using this book for both prompts for #readingoceania24.

Arthur Grimble was sent to the islands in 1914 as a colonial administrator and I was worried that the book would be very ‘colonial‘ but, although there were a few concerning tales, it seems as though he became very respected ⬇️

squirrelbrain …and an expert in the traditions and language. The book started off quite dry, but soon became rather fascinating and I may even try the sequel. I‘d also like to have learned more about his young wife, and the four babies (all girls!) she had while they were stationed there. 3mo
Librarybelle Good find! 3mo
BarbaraBB Wow. An unexpected surprise! 3mo

This is not a fun book like all of the author‘s books from Oceania—you will learn he‘s sadly and desperately recovering from alcoholism, which isn‘t much of a surprise if you read his prior books. So trigger warning. He takes a solo trip to follow Robert Louis Stevenson‘s travels to his final resting place in #Samoa, with stops in #Kiribati and islands in #Micronesia. Having listened to his other books, this is a sharp departure from his ⬇️

Texreader fun-loving days in Kiribati, Vanuatu, and Fiji. But it‘s still him doing half-witted things like a very short swim with sharks. His candor and insight are appreciated. It‘s a well-written book. By the way, if you haven‘t guessed by now, the titles of his books are only very remotely related to the substance of his books, here even less so. I hope his recovery continues. #readingOceania @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB (edited) 3mo
Librarybelle Good to know about this one! 3mo
5feet.of.fury I always loved the 1st chapter, “Good luck seeks no antecedent, but bad luck demands an inquest.” “Bad things happen to me on large land masses” I agree with you on the tone, it‘s 1 I‘ve hardly revisited because of the intensity of the self reflection vs the wild adventure of the 1st 2. 3mo

The author is touring islands in Micronesia in this book. At the museum yesterday I took photos of some of the artwork from Micronesia including this “Carved Male Figure,” from early 20th century

I visited the Oceania gallery at the San Antonio Museum of Art, so be prepared for a few interruptions for pictures of artifacts from the regions I‘m reading about. #readingOceania @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

I did a better search tonight for books for the #readingOceania challenge, especially for audiobooks, which really help me knock out lots of books. So here‘s part 1 of my anticipated reads for the challenge this year. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB I am surprised there are so many choices! 4mo
Librarybelle Hooray! 4mo
Larkken In case you are still looking for possibilities from the Marianas Islands, the tagged is by a poet/activist from Guam and is nonfiction. I‘ve not read it so would be interested to hear what you thought of it! 4mo

marleed I discovered Libby while I was living in SA because the library did such a great job encouraging people to try their e-lib. It opened up doors to many more options to experience books! I lived less than a mile from the fascinating Central Library but it was the e-library I was most grateful for. Funny thing is, I purchase more physical books because audiobooks allow me to experience so many more authors and genres! 4mo
Texreader @marleed I discovered Libby late last year during jury duty!! 😊 and I work about two blocks from the central library but never go. I keep telling myself it would be good to go walk there but I don‘t. I think it‘s been closed for construction too. 4mo
Texreader @Larkken Thank you!!! 4mo
marleed @Texreader omg - I was called for jury duty about 3 months into living in SA and I walked down from my Pearl apt to the courthouse (because I could). The ordeal was fascinating since hundreds of potential jurors for many cases gathered. Coolest thing though, as the morning kicked off this older man (bailiff I suppose) welcomed everyone and explained how proud he was of us for showing up for our civic duty. He made me proud to be there. 4mo
Texreader @marleed I served on a jury many years ago here in SA. I got lucky this time. But I think it‘s a great public service. And as a litigator it was fascinating to be on that side of it. 4mo
