The Count of Abranhos | Eca De Queiros
post image

I am enjoying this satirical 19th-century novel recounting the life of the Count of Abranhos. This #Portuguese magistrate/statesman is a horrible human being, although his secretary (who's the narrator) doesn't see it... The sarcasm might be a bit heavy-handed, but it's fun and full of social criticism.

Statue of the author from Wikipedia - if he could see it, he'd probably roll his eyes at it 😂

Swe_Eva Envious that you read in Portuguese. But your handle does suggest that you are Portuguese, so perhaps it's not too strange. 😉 I'm trying to learn Portuguese and it is SO difficult (for me at least). I can read children's books, barely. 😂 6y
iporto @Swe_Eva 😁 I'm Brazilian, só yeah.. portuguese comes easy and I love my language so much. And even being my first language I agree that learning it is so so hard! But be strong, and I'm here to help you! 😉 6y
Swe_Eva @iporto 😂😂 Thank you!! 6y

Swe_Eva @iporto I'm just happy it's a little difficult for you too - makes me feel slightly less stupid. 😂 6y

SqueakyChu @iporto @Swe_Eva Portuguese is such a beautiful language. I can almost make it out because I understand Spanish. 😄 6y
Swe_Eva @SqueakyChu I thought it'd be easier to learn because I have some Spanish, but I just keep mixing them up. 😂 I'm OK with written, but understanding spoken is a looong way away for me. 😕😂 6y
SqueakyChu @iporto Can I count as an honorary Brazilian because I have a cousin who lives in São Paulo? ? 6y
iporto @SqueakyChu Portuguese and Spanish have a lot of things in common and they are both beautiful! I understand most of Spanish because they are similar.. 6y
iporto @SqueakyChu really?! You totally can! 😁😁 Have you ever came to Brazil? If not, please do it!! 6y
SqueakyChu @iporto I never have, but my younger son has made two summer trips to Brazil. He has many Brazilian friends he met while in high school. He is great at understanding Portuguese. His best friend is from Brasilia. 6y
iporto @SqueakyChu wow!! I live near Brasília, in Goiânia. Your son is a smart boy. Brazilian friends are awesome 😜. Next trip you should come with him. We have so many beautiful places! 6y
SqueakyChu @iporto No more distant traveling for him. He‘s now married with two young kids. He did most of his traveling in his single days. 😃 (edited) 6y
iporto @SqueakyChu 😂 or he can plan a huge family travel when the kids are a little older. 6y
SqueakyChu @iporto I‘ll suggest it to him! 😊 6y

Pickpick

Beautiful tale originally written in Portuguese. Lions are killing girls in a Mozambique village, but no one knows why. Told in alternating perspectives between a married woman & a hunter hired to find the lions, Couto paints a tapestry of village life, marriage & relationships, sexual desire, mourning, & African folklore in Mozambique. His writing is lyrical & mysterious, chronicling a story that is ultimately about women's oppression. 🦁

vivastory Excellent review. I've had this one on my TBR for awhile now. 7y

It is about time to get started with this fine #portuguese writer sitting on my shelves for a while. And what could make of a smoother start with this "Book of Disquiet" other than a nice glass of porto #portugal #pessoa
