I am enjoying this satirical 19th-century novel recounting the life of the Count of Abranhos. This #Portuguese magistrate/statesman is a horrible human being, although his secretary (who's the narrator) doesn't see it... The sarcasm might be a bit heavy-handed, but it's fun and full of social criticism.

His writing is lyrical & mysterious, chronicling a story that is ultimately about women's oppression. 🦁
