Scratch One: A Novel | Michael Crichton, John Lange
Pickpick

Is this book original & unique? No, not really. It's a pulpy crime thriller from the 60s.

If I had to sum it up, I'd say Cars 2 mostly used the plot from it but made it family friendly, less globe-trotting, and added the power of friendship to the movie.

Mistaken identity, secret agents, & lots of dangerous people that a lawyer ends up facing against - all to try and get the girl.

It's not the most unique book ever but it kept me reading

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.

The Mad King | EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS

Time for pulp fiction and Casey snuggles. THE MAD KING‘s cover led me to expect pseudo-medieval fantasy, but it‘s actually a contemporary-to-publication adventure novel about a young American who is mistaken for the runaway king of his mother‘s European homeland. The first three chapters were fun.

Bookwomble I've had this on my tbr shelf for a couple of decades! From my memory of the blurb when I bought it, I think it's ERB's nod to the Ruritanian romances of Anthony Hope. Good to hear you're enjoying it - I'll try to bump it up my list! 1mo
dabbe Casey, you simply slay me. 🤎🐾🧡 1mo
xicanti @Bookwomble I‘m almost halfway through now, and it‘s still good! If it were a novella, it‘d be at its natural end point, but there‘s still enough left that I expect lots of twists and exciting confrontations. 1mo

#weekendreads

Definitely enjoying the cooler temperatures today.

📕I will finish the Matt Helm today. I picked it up at a FLL along with the James Bond books last week.

📘Handling Sin is my last #Roll100 for September and a bit of a struggle.

📗Loving my revisit to Brideshead for #HashtagBrigade and am reading far, far ahead of planned as a result.

Leftcoastzen 🥰love Brideshead 2mo
Ruthiella @Leftcoastzen It‘s a true classic.👌 2mo
RamsFan1963 I remember the Matt Helm movies with Dean Martin. He's played like an American James Bond, Martin wasn't much of an actor, but they could still be enjoyed for their campiness. 2mo
Ruthiella @RamsFan1963 I used to love Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis movies as a kid. 😅 Apparently the Matt Helm movies were quite different from the books. But for sure I can see a tie to Fleming‘s Bond, who is also quite different from his film counterpart. (edited) 2mo

Pickpick

A brutal, unflinching dive into the psyche of a teenage boy unraveling amid the violence and neglect of Yokohama‘s slum. Stark and relentless, it‘s a haunting portrait of innocence lost and a society in decay, and pretty well written too.

Mehso-so

I had bought the second book at a used book store, but I'll be donating after having finished book one...

It wasn't necessarily bad, but I think the character in the cultural zeitgeist has outgrown the original story. You probably know all you want to know about Tarzan without reading this and spoiling your mental image. Overly long, pretty racist, way too many mentions of sinew, and a depressing ending took away from the overall enjoyment.
