Lillian reminded me so much of my Gram—magical, complicated, rebellious and a poetry lover. They would be about the same age, and both have a tremendous love for New York City. So my whole experience with this book was colored by that connection. I loved it so much, even though it meandered (seemingly) aimlessly across decades, experiences and city blocks.

Fleishman Is in Trouble: A Novel | Taffy Brodesser-Akner
post image
Pickpick

This shines a light into the darkness of dysfunctional marriage and divorce. Brodesser-Akner captures the feelings and realities of shared parenting gone horribly wrong. She develops Fleishman from a horny divorced dude with kids to a full-time dad conflicted about love, sex, and kids. Sometimes I grimaced, others I laughed. And occasionally I thought the author was quite wise.

Finished three this week. Two felt like slogs (for different reasons), so I‘m pleased with myself. (Reviews to come soon!) Three more in progress. Is it wrong to be most interested in the kids‘ book I‘m reading b/c my granddaughter is reading it? Nah ... I‘m good with that.

Litsi Not wrong because it is The Tale of Desperaux! One of the best books ever. 4y
Cinfhen I used to love reading along with the kids!!!! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Litsi Right! I remember when our grandson read it a few years ago, and that he loved it. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Yes, it should help me escape for a few hours! 4y

Haven‘t posted a #bookreport or #weeklyforecast in an age. And it was a GOOD reading week and month.

#ARC - Knock at Midnight and Our Malady (both excellent) & User‘s Guide to Democracy
#readblackauthors - Knock, Hood Feminism, Passing, Proof of Love (also all excellent)
#indigenousauthor #nonfictionnerds - Braiding Sweetgrass (lovely)
#irlbookgroup - White Fragility
#bottomofmyTBR: Autobiography of a Yogi
#litsypolitico - Unbelievable

LiteraryinLawrence That‘s awesome, Barbara! 4y
Cinfhen Hi!!!! So glad to see you had an impactful reading month 🙌🏻♥️ 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen It was a good month - 13 total plus two Audible Originals. Heavy choices though, man ... 4y
Cinfhen I noticed there wasn‘t any fluff in this bunch 🤪 4y

Cathythoughts I was wondering about Red Head ... just looked up your review! Sounds like a good palate cleanser as you say ❤️👍🏻 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @eraderneely Thanks—I think I picked it up on NetGalley after reading a review here. It‘s such an important issue! 4y

As my friend dropped her copy at my door last weekend, she said, “I can‘t even remember if I finished this. It‘s like all Tyler‘s other books.” Not ringing praise. But I enjoyed my venture into the power of the palate cleanser, which is how I‘d qualify this book. It‘s a small character study of a few days in a quirky man‘s life. Two sittings to finish—max. Some LOL.

This short, middle grade true story is an affecting story about genocide, fighting, refugee life, and the importance of water in Sudan. It‘s just the kind of book that reminds kids and adults that life is wholly different in other parts of the world, and that's something we all need every once in a while.

#thebibliophage2020 #irlbookgroup #weneeddiversereads

alisiakae I am probably going to listen to the same book for the #genocide prompt. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft It‘s very short but that makes it a good choice for a tough subject. (At least to me, in these difficult times.) (edited) 4y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage I also actually just realized my current read, a graphic novel memoir about an artist working with Syrian refugees, also fits the prompt. My brain hasn‘t been firing on all cylinders lately. 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft Even better! I totally understand the brain stuff. Can‘t say mine is much better ... 4y

My #bookreport for the week. I‘ve had a little more time on my hands, as business changes wind down for now. And I just wasn‘t motivated to do any business tasks. Hence ... baking and reading!

#finished 4, 2 of which were super short.
#starting 3 more this week

kspenmoll You can do it! 5y
Hooked_on_books It‘s a wonderful book 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Hooked_on_books I‘m enjoying it‘s quirkiness. But I‘m also concerned that she won‘t ultimately present transgender in a positive and appropriate way. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kspenmoll So far, I‘m on track. Crossing my fingers. Life has been so busy. 5y
Hooked_on_books I think she did in the end. And of course the main focus is on this family and their efforts to do the “right” thing for their child, without having any idea what that is. 5y
