Pickpick

The ending felt very unsatisfying. The whole book I felt like the ending was going to involve divorce, but the ending didn‘t even involve a proper ending or closure. This book is funny in the way of a Troost book, but it had a much darker tone because, ultimately, this is his addiction and recovery memoir. It‘s actually heartbreaking in some ways, and it‘s hard to put my finger on exactly why.

GingerAntics I honestly wish there was one more Troost book after this one (this is the last he published), just to have that happy, goofy, inquisitive feeling of the first two books in this trilogy, and to know how things turned out. #JMaartenTroost #HeadhunstersOnMyDoorstep #addiction #recovery #alcoholism #audiobook 2w
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury yes, very different tone to the first two. I have mixed feelings here. The ending was almost just “well, the deadline is in five minutes and I have to attach it to the email first.” Did that happen in his little one bedroom or efficiency apartment or at home with his wife and children? Who knows? We may never know. I really hope it‘s the latter. 2w

5feet.of.fury @GingerAntics yeah he seems to have fallen off the map entirely after this (&there was@supposed to be another book) The opening of this book is amazing. His wife was such a trooper too (hiking on remote islands heavily pregnant, etc) so you just know he was putting her through it. 2w
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury I love how she said if he ever drank again she‘d make him a eunuch. 🤣😂🤣 that makes me think she probably didn‘t divorce him… but then he ran away from home. I don‘t know. Last updated bio I saw say he lived with his wife and 2 sons in California. 2w
Bookwormjillk I wish there was another book too. I enjoyed these. 2w

I‘m not sure if this is funny or tragic. He‘s returned to Kiribati without his wife and children (apparently they have 2 sons now), having seemingly run away from home after going to rehab for alcoholism (at least he‘s not drinking), and he‘s waxing poetic about how things are just how they were when they left. It‘s funny in its way, but it‘s also heartbreaking. I seriously feel like this is a harbinger of divorce ahead.

GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury how am I not surprised he‘s an alcoholic? I‘m really hoping this doesn‘t end in him getting divorced. (edited) 2w
Texreader Once you read one you have to keep going right? 😁 2w
GingerAntics @Texreader seriously! Yes! I even want to read the one on China. 2w
GingerAntics @Texreader I‘m just hoping he‘s not divorced by the end of this book… that shouldn‘t exist because they cancelled his contract for it?! 2w

#Readingoceania2024 #samoa Although the plot is contrived and the pacing erratic, the main characters/narrators had charm enough for me to keep reading. Plus, the invention of the stories around Robert Louis Stevenson and Mary Shelly was a nice addition. I even learned a bit about Samoa.

Librarybelle I didn‘t realize this one took place in Samoa…good find! 5mo

This book is a fictional account of the lives of Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife Fanny, told from her perspective. I‘ve tried unsuccessfully to read Treasure Island, and really don‘t have any great desire to read his books. Even so, this book was fascinating! It explored his very sickly life and his very independent wife who quite literally saved him by taking to the high seas despite her awful sea sickness. And it‘s a story of Fanny‘s own ⬇️

Texreader traumatic life experiences and frightening health scare. Ultimately, moving again and again to find a place where RLS will not just survive but thrive, they build a home in #Samoa. This was a well-written and very interesting novel that I highly recommend even for those who are not RLS fans. #readingOceania #litsyAtoZ #letterU 7mo

Big News! I finished this book, which means I completed the #LitsyAtoZ challenge!! I‘ve read books that start with every letter of the alphabet this year for the seventh year in a row! This book was for #Samoa #ReadingOceania, a challenge I finished much earlier this year but for which I still have more books I found and want to read. Review to come.
