My mom bought me this book that she read in the 80s. It helped her overcome the damaging parenting that she went through, particularly as a kid of an alcoholic. Reading this book with that context in mind made me grateful she broke the cycle of not treating you children as human beings and the normalizing of abusive behaviour as 'good parenting.' I wouldn't recommend this book in any other circumstance other than the one I read it under, though!

I think the cover & title are awful, but I actually loved learning more about the enneagram in this book. It's full of humor & hard truths & helped me understand some of my own challenges & others' choices better. The structure worked well introducing each type & explaining how their childhood, work, relationship, etc. can be affected by their type. It wraps up each one w/ a list of ways they can work on spiritual growth & healthy decision making.

#AuldLangSpine
@KadaGul here are 10 random things about me. I‘m so happy we were matched for #AuldLangSpine by @monalyisha 🤓

In the spirit of #Auldlangspine, here are a few facts about me before we start this reading challenge ☺️ @Zuhkeeyah

Zuhkeeyah I‘m also from the mitten! 💚🤍 4mo
monalyisha Fun list! #MittenLitten might be the cutest hashtag I‘ve ever seen. That slow creep towards being just like your mom is *highly* relatable. And I don‘t play favorites; I love my wine and beer children equally. 😜 4mo
HOTPock3tt @Zuhkeeyah Oh nice!🎊😃 where in the mitten are you? I live near Ann Arbor 🙃 (edited) 4mo
HOTPock3tt @monalyisha Thanks!!☺️ btw I legit fought being like my mother as hard as I possibly could! 🤣 Also, for not playing favorites, we beer children salute you!! lol!🍺🍷😎 (edited) 4mo

A contemplative read about finding your place and offering a way to be that, in light of the world today, seems to make a lot of sense. This read was in stark contrast to Blood Meridian that I am reading also. These two books couldn‘t be further apart- this full of love kindness and respect- McCarthy‘s book a stream of blood, betrayal and depravity. This is a read that fixes.

I never thought of it quite this way. I never really got to that part yet. I didn‘t think about being “on the spectrum.” I was still in the self-discovery, ah-ha stage. This speaks to me, though. It makes far more sense to say that spectrum is part of us, inside of us, than something we are on. It certainly makes more sense with the fact that every single autistic person is uniquely autistic.

GingerAntics @julesG I KNEW SHE DIDN‘T KNOW!!! I didn‘t guess her mom had been diagnosed, but it makes sense, and I feel like it helped Cassy embrace herself. Her mother‘s unerring, unquestioning, unequivocal note on the back of that page almost let her mother speak to her/reassure her from beyond the grave that this was it. 8mo
julesG Reading the book was a bit like going through my own journey again. And getting Cassy's mum's reassurance that it's okay to be who I am. 8mo

julesG Really liked the idea of the spectrum being part of us. I mean it is. We're all mad (mad as in neurodiverse) here. Just depends on what degree of "not neuro-normal" it is. Where some people see a quirk, others see ASD. 8mo
GingerAntics @julesG so true! 8mo

I‘m new to learning about the enneagram and this was a great introduction.
It really is a joy to spend time thinking about the different types and where you and your people fall over the 9 types. I found it very interesting and will probably continue to think about it for some time.
The only problem I had with it was that I would‘ve preferred the spirituality parts to be spirituality without Christianity.

The first half of the book was hard to read with all the moaning about her weight and food, etc. But maybe that is accurate for some people battling obesity? It‘s nice to see Mary become somewhat independent (with the help of people in the small town in California she ends up in). The ending was left a little bit open, but I suppose in doing that, that might mean something, too.
