Picnic at Hanging Rock | Joan Lindsay
post image

My illustrated edition of this Australian classic 😍❤️📚.

“Whether Picnic at Hanging Rock is fact or fiction, my readers must decide for themselves. As the fateful picnic took place in the year 1900, and all the characters who appear in this book are long since dead, it hardly seems important.”

Jeg @MrsMalaprop just saw this and said to Kathy look what S has got ,a beautiful edition, she said we have it too! 😊 seems she gave it to me in 1989! Inside there is writing and a card. So much for my memory. Now I‘m going to enjoy the book again. Thank you! 😍 7y
ReadZenRites Oh, a NF mystery from the turn of last Century! That‘s very cool. And old. 😁 7y

The Call of the Wild | Jack London
post image

This 1910 edition of Jack London‘s Call of the Wild may not be a #spinefreezer in the customary sense, but it sure kept me awake at night when I first read it as an 11-year-old. (That might have had something to do with illustrations like the one above...of course, just the thought of a beloved family pet being mistreated would have given me nightmares as a child!)

Linsy Some things that scare us as kids stick with us the most. Beautiful copy! 7y

I think some of the darker Grimm's Fairy Tales are spine-freezers--and so many of them are pretty damn dark. I remember how much they scared me growing up between the stories and the pictures and usually read before bed. 😱😆This is one of the two Grimm's Fairy Tales books I have from my childhood. It was published in 1945 so well before I was born. It's beat up, but I love the illustrations. ❤️

rjsthumbelina Agreed! One of the second grade teachers at the school where I work read her students the Grimms' Little Red Riding Hood, and they were so freaked out! And that's a pretty mild one - they ddomt 7y
rjsthumbelina Sorry, I'm not sure what happened there! 🤷 7y
rjsthumbelina They didn't even want to write their comparisons between the Grimm version and the one they knew bc they were so upset! 7y

emtobiasz Ooh I own this one too (from my parents)! @wanderinglynn this is the Grimms book I was describing that matches your Andersen fairy tales one! (edited) 7y
DebinHawaii @rjsthumbelina Yes, I was flipping through thinking of the Disney version of Cinderella compared to this one. 😱How the stepsisters made the glass slipper fit them & the birds at the end... 😵 7y
BeansPage Gorgeous edition 😍😍😍 7y
wanderinglynn @emtobiasz Very cool! 😀 7y
Linsy That‘s so true! Just look at that wolf! 7y
Linsy P.S. I‘m very jealous right now. I love this edition!!! 7y
ReadZenRites It‘s always interesting to see the reactions of my teenager when she hears the real (non-Disney) version of fairytales!😱😂 7y
