laurenslibrary I wasn't crazy about it either 2mo

Two because of the season and two because they have been ALMOST for a couple of months.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m curious about the Greenwood book! I wasn‘t a fan of 4mo
OriginalCyn620 👌🏻😊📚❤️ 4mo
Tex2Flo @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I DID like Ugly and Wonderful, but have still been putting off this new one. I have to balance the heavy reads with some lighter ones. 4mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Tex2Flo I was in the #Unpopular opinion vote on that one 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4mo

And time to bail . . .

RamsFan1963 I knew it wasn't just me. So much Litsy love for this book, but I found it very underwhelming to say the least. #unpopular opinion 5mo
C.Perone @RamsFan1963 Nope, you're not alone in this #unpopularopinion I love the idea of it, but it was drowned in a sea of overwriting. Glad I didn't waste more than 35 pages worth of time on it 5mo

#Unpopular opinion time! But this is me, not the book. This book has some beautiful writing but is written in a style that is keeping me at arm‘s length. Each time I read a passage and feel I‘m about to get sucked in, it jumps to something completely different, pushing me away again. I can actually see why so many love it, but after reading half of it, I know I‘m just not compatible with this book.

Cinfhen Ha!! I spy a possible candidate ☺️💕 5mo
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen 🤔Hmmm…could be! Time will tell. 😎📚📦📫 5mo

Exceptionally late review, and probably an #unpopular opinion, but I bought this to continue the series and although I was still impressed, it felt a little rushed, disjointed and just not quite there for me. Perhaps it's the ending, perhaps it's something else. But for me it's 3.5 ⭐. #recentlyread #nospoilers #YAfiction #YAFantasy 👸

#Unpopular opinion: I didn't like it. The writing felt flat and there was a lot of telling rather than showing. The characters seemed more like archetypes than real people. There was a lot of speechifying that I found off-putting. I think the theme was interesting, but it felt to me that the characters and story were in service to it, rather than it emerging from the story, if that makes sense. Thanks for the buddy read @Cinfhen #EoE 👇

CarolynM I'm off to look at the discussion questions now 6mo
suvata Not every book is for every person. Personally, Steinbeck is one of my favorites. 6mo
Cinfhen I LOVE an #unpopularopinion 🙌🏻I see what you‘re saying and your criticism is valid. I don‘t think this is the perfect novel or THE GREAT AMERICAN novel that Steinbeck thought it was, but it was definitely engaging, thought provoking and held my interest all 600 pages. So that makes it a TOTAL pick for me. Plus all the discussions really elevated my enjoyment. Thanks for joining in. 6mo

CarolynM @Cinfhen I certainly don't think it's bad and I wasn't bored which is why it's a so-so not a pan. I think I just don't find Steinbeck's characters very sympathetic (I hated ALL of them in The Grapes of Wrath). 6mo
Cinfhen I think I‘m ready to revisit GoW! I haven‘t read it since HS and I HATED it back then 6mo
batsy I'm with @Cinfhen I love this unpopular opinion, as well 😁 A lot of your criticism rings true for me but I found it engrossing, all the same. The narrative pulled me in and I became invested in certain characters. I found the speechifying asides quite tiresome, as well. 6mo
Kalalalatja I definitely agree about the characters feeling like archetypes, and the telling, not showing. I‘m glad there are some suffering opinions, it makes for livelier discussions 👍 6mo
Susannah It‘s strange how a significantly flawed book can still get a high rating. I see a lot of what you‘re talking about, and I had my own issues with the Steinbeck family thread, which I felt was shoehorned in with the Trask‘s story, but I still gave it four stars. Reading is so subjective, isn‘t it? Great review! 6mo
jillrhudy I can't stand Steinbeck! I feel like it's a character flaw or something! Melville either! 6mo
rubyslippersreads You‘re not alone. I gave it a “pick” because it (mostly) held my interest, but it left me feeling that I need a palate cleanser like Betsy-Tacy or Anne of Green Gables. 😊 (edited) 6mo
RaimeyGallant Great review. I love the word speechifying. I'm going to use it in a sentence today. 6mo
UwannaPublishme Yay for your #unpopularopinion! Really appreciate your honesty. I agree it wasn‘t a perfect novel, but this Steinbeck fan was deeply engrossed in the story and the symbolism. And our provoking discussions doubled the pleasure! 6mo
erzascarletbookgasm I agree about the archetype characters..some parts are like lecture notes to me, but it held my interest to the end. 6mo
mrp27 Great review and I can see your points! 6mo
Ruthiella *breathes a sigh of relief* I disliked this book too! I found the biblical parallels OTT and Cathy too one dimensional! I liked GoW better but mainly as a historical perspective of America‘s ugly history. 6mo
CarolynM @Ruthiella I liked the bits of GofW that described the general situation but I HATED the characters and couldn't have cared less what happened to them. 6mo

I was soooo excited to read this one and it left me feeling a little let down... I expected the twist that came and was just underwhelmed with the entire book... I‘m sure this is an #unpopular opinion!!! I really wanted to love it though!!! 😏😒😞

Kaila-ann I felt the same way, very underwhelmed. 🤔 7mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Kaila-ann a big disappointment!! 7mo
Godpants Yep. I feel like it expects you to be blown away by how “charming” the characters are and therefore unable to figure out what‘s coming. 7mo

I was spoiled on one part of this, but even if I hadn't been, I still might only give this a so-so, which I know is an #unpopular opinion. I felt like the underlying plot was so much like so many other YA books. It just wasn't as good as as her Six of Crows, set in the same world, completely different plot and style. #yareads
