Ok, I‘m going to have the #unpopular opinion here, but I thought this story was way too slow. I liked the characters, the beachy small town setting, even the premise. But it was just a little *too* cozy for me, and I liked the first book much better.

#unpopular opinion
The Great Alone: I listened to this during the storming of the capitol in January, and just couldn‘t take the unrelenting suffering.
The Girl in the Mirror: There was too much I couldn‘t buy into, and the main character really grated on me.
The Cracked Spine: Just a big letdown because it had all the things I love. The protagonist was interrogative in an annoying way. But it‘s the first in a series and I would read others.

megnews Thanks for sharing. I‘ve only read one by Hannah and thought I‘d read more. There‘s definitely something to be said about the timing of reading a book. 2y

#WORSTOF21 @megnews

I realise some will be an #unpopular opinion.
Stink stank stunk ..

megnews Oh no! I had high hopes for The Personal Librarian. 2y
TheBookHippie @megnews I‘ve read her real biography and taken the tour at The Morgan Library. This author mixed up facts timelines and although she admits it at the back of the book to do that with a well known person turns me off entirely it‘s not the first time this author has done that. Either write fiction or nonfiction she blurs the lines and turns facts to the detriment of the people she‘s writing about. 2y

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

The Outrun is almost like a meditation. It‘s beautiful but very slow going, and not much plot.
The Truth About Animals is full of busted myths about all kinds of creatures early naturalists had wrong. So far I‘ve learned about sloths, vultures, bats, beavers, and storks. Similar to Mary Roach‘s writing, I‘ve laughed a lot.

I‘m going to give The Chosen and the Beautiful another chance before I totally bail. Then 🤷‍♀️.

Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts on this one 👉🏽it started strong for me but by the end it was too ridiculous / but my opinion seems to be #Unpopular 3y
Soubhiville @Cinfhen not that unpopular, it only has a 65% rating here. It sounds interesting, we‘ll see! 3y
BookNAround The Truth About Animals sounds like a lot of fun. 3y
Soubhiville @BookNAround I almost always enjoy nature writing. Especially if there‘s some humor to it. 3y
Larkken I agree, stacking The Truth About Animals! 3y

#unpopular opinion. Way too wordy and I predicted almost everything. I wouldve bailed but everyone said it was a great book. To be honest, the beginning story of the missing kids was more interesting than the murder that was the plot.

GloVerdino Same! I did not like this but kept reading because other people love it 3y

2021 started with me finishing this. So, #unpopular opinion time! 🙃😂 WHY??!! Just why???!! The ending. Like 🙈🙊#nospoilers #whatdidIread #reallyover

aa_guer2021 For those that don‘t care and want to know more, I speak of the ending. And giving in, and wanting something more instead of something simple, and why couldn‘t it be what it was tantalizingly possible. It‘s a popular one, so just why?! 😢 #depression ⚠️ 3y

Ugh, so frustrated with my #unpopular opinion. On one hand, I so appreciate the honest discussions regarding the countless traumas of sexual assault. On the other, I found the writing to be sloppy (So...many...repeat...words...), the plot had holes, and for a podcast-based narrative, the audiobook wasn't impressive.
Yet, this story is important--so important, and society needs to hear it. And for that alone, I give the author full kudos.

2.75⭐️

I didn‘t hate it let me start there but did I find myself wanting to continue it because I wanted to desperately know what was next? Absolutely not. I started this thinking that I would love it because it‘s about this guy who loves books and stories and far off places. Then thanks to luck and the tiniest bit of courage, he actually gets to go on an adventure to the greatest far off place of his dreams. Sadly it wasn‘t for me.

Trigger warnings for just about everything - family violence, child abuse, sexual assault, drug misuse, sexist, racism, infidelity... The list goes on. And I'm okay with all that, as long as there is some sort of redemption or even just a point to it all.

But no.

This is my pick for #BookClubWorthy for #booked2020 because it was my pick for book club. There was definitely a lot to discuss but I'm sorry for making people read it.

Cinfhen Ha!! We read it for #BookClub too!! Very good discussion 😄we all agreed these were really AWFUL people 4y
LibrarianRyan Isn't this the book they made the TV show on. It was an interesting TV show. I remember it was based on a book. It was quite controversial, and only lasted one season (it should of, it kind of sucked). 4y

Reagan I hated this book. Awful. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I hate when I pick an #unpopular book for book club. But, like you said, there's lots to discuss. 4y
CarolynM My book group read this a few years ago. I refused to read it because I'd read one of his earlier books. Subsequently I have read another one (tagged) - I think he writes quite well, but he writes ugly stories about uniformly awful people. I think that's just as unrealistic as lovely stories about uniformly nice people, but I know which I prefer to spend time on. 4y
