Quizá solo semienamorado. Porque ella dice que no, que no me quiere. Y para estar total, completa, absolutamente enamorado, hay que tener plena conciencia de que uno también inspira amor.

It took me a while to get through this weird little book, but I did like it. In the face of a weird fog/plague/catastrophe the main character does her best to care for her mother, her ex husband, and the little boy placed in her care. #ToBLonglist but not #ToBShortlist I‘m surprised by that.

Hooked_on_books I liked this one. I would have loved to have seen it make the shortlist. 4mo

I am so glad I picked this up! It reminds me a bit of In The Time of Butterflies but sapphic.

A group of 5 Uruguayan lesbian women buy a tiny cottage on the beach and we follow them for the next 40 years as they fall in and out of love and as the country changes - politically and culturally.

A country I do not see many books set in this was a lovely read.

I love dystopian fiction. I like them weird and pretty dark. Bonus points if they're translations from unknown authors. I definitely recommend this if those things sound good to you. I definitely finished this while at a bar drinking water because I no longer give any fucks apparently.

A situation causing sickness has devastated a community and caused mass evacuations. A woman is trying to keep living in her home with fewer and fewer resources to do so. I thought this was a brilliant way to look at human-caused climate change, overconsumption, and the resource degradation and immigration that goes along with it. I‘m so glad the NBA put it on their longlist for translated literature.

Another odd #nbalonglist (translated) choice. In costal Uruguay, fish suddenly started dying, birds left the sky, and people got sick. In this strange dystopian world, a woman is paid to care for a child with a syndrome that causes extreme eating while keeping tabs on her mom and hospitalized ex-husband. Honestly, I didn‘t get this at all until about halfway through. The pieces came together a bit but not a very enjoyable reading experience.

mdemanatee Oh no, I was planning on diving into this one next but I‘ll go in expecting an experience like Schweblin‘s Fever Dream where years later I am still like 🤷‍♀️ 7mo
BarbaraBB This sounds so weird. A bit too much so perhaps 7mo
Megabooks @mdemanatee it did not really remind me of that book. I‘m curious what more people will think since it did make the long! 7mo

Megabooks @BarbaraBB and she didn‘t explain major plot points/background until halfway or more through. Just really strange not in a good way. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
Suet624 When I saw your tag of nbalonglist I was so surprised that the National Basketball Association had a book club. (edited) 7mo
Megabooks @Suet624 no, no, it‘s a list of books preferred by their tallest players! The book stack must be at least 6‘6” to honor the league‘s average height. 6mo
Suet624 😂😂 Darn! I just finished Brittany Griner‘s book. She never mentioned it! 6mo
Megabooks @Suet624 patriarchy. The players didn‘t see fit to include a female athlete‘s story. Plus, I‘ve heard a few are colluding with Putin. 🤫 6mo

Who are the authors you get excited about when you see they‘ve blurbed a book? This is the third anticipated book I‘ve picked up so far this year to discover a blurb from Mariana Enriquez (and the Silvia Moreno-Garcia blurb definitely made me look too) and they haven‘t let me down yet.

1970s Uruguay in the midst of a dictatorship where family members disappear, where curfews keep people indoors and where secrets could get you killed - five queer women take a huge chance to escape to a deserted seaside village for a week where they can be free to speak and love openly. But can one week change anything? This novel is filled with heat - both passion and rage. All five characters are unforgettable I ADORED this book!

Ruthiella I‘ve had this on my list for forever. I even checked it out once but didn‘t get to it. I think I originally wanted to read it because of Jenny @ReadinEnvy ❤️ 14mo

Here‘s my review for a book I didn‘t finish. I had a feeling before I started reading this book that it wasn‘t going to be for me but I wanted to give it a fair chance. You never know if a book will be for you until you try reading it.

I also decided to start this book. I own a physical copy of this book that I won from a Goodreads giveaway but I‘m listening to it on audio. It‘s only 5 hours. I‘m feeling bored with this book but I‘ll stick with it for now.
