Very dry to begin with but then gains traction.

Today, I made Karelian pasties, using mainly this recipe: https://www.saimaalife.com/recipe-finnish-karelian-pies/ I was very bad at shaping them 😞
I served them with mushroom soup, which although not specifically Finnish I thought would go well with them. Quite nice.

Dilara @lil1inblue yes that was quite a discovery 😋. I‘ll definitely make it again. What other Finnish food do you like best? 2w
lil1inblue @Dilara I love Finnish cabbage rolls with lingonberries or lingonberry jam. I also love Pulla, which is also called Nisua depending on the region and time period (cardamom bread). And salmon soup. I can share some recipes when I get home this evening! My mom's nisua recipe is both delicious and entertaining. 😂 Oh, and there is a Finnish oven pancake that is to die for, as well. 2w
Dilara @lil1inblue Thanks! There's definitely a pulla recipe in the Moomin cookbook I got from the library: I was planning on making it. But I'm not sure the other dishes are included, so I'd love pointers or recipes 😋 2w

Mark Galeotti provides a detailed analysis of the combat in the Panshir valley during the Soviet Afghan war, offering insight into the Soviet 40th army and the Mujahideen fighters, accurately portraying the events leading up to and following the campaign. This work is recommended for Cold War enthusiasts, military history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the history of Afghanistan.

Svetlana Alexievich's “Zinky Boys“ offers a firsthand perspective on the experiences of Soviet veterans from the war of the 1980s. The English translation effectively conveys these accounts, providing American audiences with valuable insights into the Soviet experience during the conflict.

One of the rare cases of movie is better than book.I saw Juho Kuosmanen‘s adaptation&was not aware that he‘d taken some liberties which make the film compelling&emotionally engaging. The book is not convincing bc the girl character is too aloof&the man-much older than her-a despicable misogynist, antisemitic drunk who beats his wife.In the movie the girl and man are the same age&he‘s rough&rude but also kind&gentle&thus believable that 👇

Anna40 they connect&she‘d develop feelings for him. I wanted to see that tenderness&that bond&connection in the novel but it seems impossible to me that any sane woman could connect with that scumbag. What I really enjoyed was the descriptions of landscape&the Soviet Union, the journey from Moscow to Mongolia was what kept me from bailing. 7mo
CogsOfEncouragement I won this book in a readathon years ago and did not like it at all. I didn‘t know there was a movie, but I sure wouldn‘t have wanted to watch it. lol 7mo
Anna40 @CogsOfEncouragement I don‘t blame you, I wouldn‘t have bought the book if I‘d known … the film has flaws but I loved the relationship&connection between the characters & was curious to see how the author conveyed that in writing … well she didn‘t. The man is a scumbag I‘d be scared of. I‘d certainly wouldn‘t want to hang out or spend several days&nights! alone in a compartment with him 7mo

45/150 This was an interesting moment in American history, when the Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev visited the United States, toured the country, was welcomed by Hollywood stars and generally treated like a ally. The book is a bit repetitive, Khrushchev acts the buffoon, then loses his temper and throws a tantrum, apologizes and then it starts again at the next location visited. 3 ⭐⭐⭐💫
