When We Left Cuba | Chanel Cleeton
post image

I‘m determined to like this book because I was looking forward to the sequel of Next Year in Havana. But I swear if I have to read Beatriz wax on about the burden of being so beautiful and so young one more time I‘m going to do something rash - like maybe break the binding on this brand new paperback. #YoungAndBeautiful

Cinfhen Ha!!! 6y
Rachel_nyc Oh no! I have been looking forward to this one too but that sounds annoying! 6y
marleed @Rachel_nyc don‘t let it stop you because the continued story of Beatriz is worthwhile. Maybe you can go in taking a tally and then you‘ll find it amusing vice annoying! And I was engaged in the history of this time period. 6y
Rachel_nyc @marleed lol that sounds like a good idea. I‘m definitely still going to read it and always appreciate knowing flaws like this in advance so I can manage expectations. 6y

The Dumb House | John Burnside

I'm reusing The Dumb House because I came across this line today and it jumped out at me and made me think of the #youngandbeautiful prompt: "Ten years before, she would have been considered pretty; now, with the lines around her mouth and the stain of persistent disappointment in her eyes, she was almost beautiful."

I think that's a compliment?? ?

I‘m sorry to say I have yet to read this one. I definitely plan to . . . someday.

CoffeeNBooks I have this on my bookshelf, but haven't read it yet. 6y
Leftcoastzen Love it 6y
Cinfhen Read it for bookclub this year...it wasn‘t terrible. Sad because this was probably autobiographical 6y
RohitSawant On my TBR as well. 6y
gradcat Like @Cinfhen I, too, found this one very sad, but I really liked it. 6y

Cinfhen What a great passage! Blake Crouch has a new book coming out. Can‘t remember the title 🤔 6y
LiterRohde @Cinfhen I will definitely be looking to read more of his books in the future. 6y
Cinfhen I think it might even be a somewhat sequel to Dark Matter!! I‘m so annoyed that I can‘t recall the title. Someone posted on Litsy in the past week or so 6y

Pickpick

This is a fantastic book about a #youngandbeautiful genderqueer person. I wanted to learn more about individuals of this orientation. As with any human, each is different, but I feel a special kinship that he went to Duke as well, & I got a lot of the references. #yesterday (12 years before him) when I was there, it was somewhat difficult to come out as gay, much less genderqueer. He helped forge a path for others, & that makes me very happy! 4⭐️

JackOBotts I finished their memoir last month and thought it was honest and funny and important. Also: Happy to find another #Dukie! #classof2004 🙌🏼 6y
Megabooks @JackOBotts They wrote a great memoir for sure! #classof2003! Did we know each other?? 6y

JackOBotts Lol! I don‘t know! 🤔 It‘s possible?! 🤷🏻‍♀️I was in an a cappella group and lived in Mirecourt. No sorority affiliation; was a cultural anthropology major...any overlaps? Despite being a smallish school, it‘s still “big” enough. My sister and I were there together for a year and only saw each other when we made plans. 6y
Eggs Nice combo! 6y
Megabooks @JackOBotts I was a cultural anthropology minor 👍🏻👍🏻, but I only started taking those classes the last two years. I took a class one summer because my best friend did and got hooked! I can‘t sing at all! 😂😂 I wrote for The Chronicle all four years. I vaguely knew Dan Mallory (one who wrote tagged book), but wasn‘t in his department until he was nearly gone. 🤔 We may have crossed paths. 6y
Megabooks @Eggs Thank you! 😊 6y
Reggie Looks like I‘m not the only one multitasking. Lol nice!! 6y
Megabooks @Reggie Thanks!! 👍🏻 6y
Cinfhen Well played and memoir sounds entertaining and informative 6y
Megabooks @Cinfhen It was both! I definitely recommend it! 6y
RohitSawant Great pick! Stacking! 6y
Megabooks @rohit-sawant I hope you enjoy it! 6y
JackOBotts Dang! Chances are I saw your byline, then, but that may be the extent of it! 😁 LOL. Even so, fun to find another alumna on Litsy! I haven‘t been back to campus in over a decade 🤦🏻‍♀️; with all the new bldgs and renovations, it‘ll probably feel so foreign if/when I do get there! 😩 Woman in the Window is on my TBR...I love Hitchcock‘s Rear Window, so I think that book may be right up my alley. 6y
Megabooks It is fantastic to find you!! I was at Duke Hospital this summer and drove around the campus a bit. (As much as you can drive around Duke!) I mainly go to the off-campus places I like such as The Regulator, The Duck Shop, and I have a new favorite restaurant Arepa! @JackOBotts (edited) 6y

Look at Me: A Novel | Jennifer Egan
post image

#youngandbeautiful #MayMovieMagic
I'm 2/2 with Jennifer Egan, so looking forward to trying this one. But it does sound like a tough read: the story of a fashion model who is in a car accident and after recovering must come to grips with the change in how people react to her appearance.
@rohit-sawant @Cinfhen

merelybookish What have you read by her? I adored Goon Squad but haven't read anything else by her even though I own a couple. 6y
Billypar @merelybookish I read Goon Squad and The Keep- loved them both, but I think I liked The Keep best- so inventive and it had me hooked all the way through 6y
merelybookish @Billypar Oh cool! I own that one so will bump it up the TBR! 🙂 6y

Billypar @merelybookish Nice- hope you enjoy it! 6y
batsy I found it quite a difficult read, pretty savage. Egan is pretty uncompromising in depicting how society can be. No warm fuzzies here. 6y
Reggie Have you ever seen that movie Amores Perros? Where there‘s 3 intersecting story lines but ones about a model who is kept by a married man whose wife she used to call at night. Then the model gets in an accident and loses her legs. Then she loses her dog under the floorboards and can always hear it but can‘t get it out. After the married man comes to live with her, now she starts to get phone calls at night. It‘s crazy. 6y
Cinfhen Reminds me of the true life story of the model who had her face slashed ~ Marla Hanson 6y
Billypar @batsy Yeah, I think I'd have to be in the right reading mood. But I'm interested where it could go from the description. 6y
Billypar @Reggie I saw it a long time ago and remember really liking it, but not a lot of the details. What you mentioned sounds vaguely familiar- definite parallels with the Egan novel. I've enjoyed every Inarritu film I've seen- one of my favorite directors. 6y
Billypar @Cinfhen I don't think I heard about that one- how awful. Hearing those kinds of stories on the news makes you shudder, but I value novels that can put you in the mindset of the survivor who has to overcome the trauma a horrific event like that can cause. 6y
batsy Definitely recommend it. I've only read this one and The Keep (which I think we've swooned over before :) and really liked both; she's an intriguing writer. @Reggie Thanks for the reminder of that one! Such a good movie. Want to watch it again. 6y
Reggie @batsy I used to have the hugest crush on Gael Garcia Bernal when I was younger. I had to see everything he was in. (edited) 6y
batsy @Reggie Me too! I still have a crush, but it's under control now 😂 I still haven't watched Mozart in the Jungle and younger me would be shocked about this lol 6y
Billypar @batsy @Reggie Yes, have definitely swooned over The Keep before. I haven't swooned over Gael Garcia Bernal but I get it 😁 6y

Ted‘s victims were all #YoungAndBeautiful 💔#MayMovieMagic This memoir chronicles the #Evolution of a serial killer.
🎶Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be, There's a shadow hanging over me Oh, #yesterday came suddenly🎶
Sorry, Beatles...I doubt you had a serial killer in mind, when you wrote these lyrics 😬

Megabooks I don‘t think that‘s what the Star Trek writers had in mind either! 😬🖖🏻 (edited) 6y

Eggs Nice combo! 6y
Cinfhen I know @Reviewsbylola can‘t wait to check out the film!!!! 6y
RohitSawant I usually avoid anything TB but looking forward to the film, too, mainly because of Efron's performance. Stephen King once described a serial killer named Charlie Starkwether as having the emptiness of a deserted planet behind his eyes, and I get the same feeling whenever I see a picture of TB and it creeps me out to no end. 6y
