A Bad Case of Stripes | David Shannon

This hilarious F book is a fun read for students. It would be grade as a PR, IR, and RA. This story is about a girl who loves lima beans but she was afraid to let people know how much she truly loved them. She was worried her peers would make fun of her but little did she know what would happen if she stopped eating them. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Bad-Case-of-Stripes-Descriptive-Writ...

amyqualk The website takes you to teachers pay teachers website. Although it does cost money it could give you great ideas for your own lesson plans. I would use UDL 1.1 customize the display and ESOL 1 teach questioning for clarification. These strategies can be used to help students understand what is happening in the story. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
CaseyL I love the theme of being true to yourself! Although it could be a perfect RA, I read it to my VPK students this past summer and a lot of the children were scared of the way the girl looked as the story went on. A lot of the children never wanted to see the book again and the message of being yourself was lost on them. :( I still love this story! Great post! 6y
JanaLL My daughter got this book at her school book fair. Cute story!!! 6y
emilykwilkins Great resource! I think that this is such a great book! 6y

Knuffle Bunny | Mo Willems

The adorable Caldecott award winning F book is about a little girl who has a bunny that gets put in the washing machine. She tries to tell her dad but she can't speak yet so he has no idea what she is trying to say to him. I don't want to ruin this story for anyone but it is a wonderful book that you should read. https://buggyandbuddy.com/knuffle-bunny-art-project-for-kids/ takes you to a cute assignment that students can make their own bunny.

amyqualk I would use UDL 3.4 support memory and transfer and ESOL 8 Use direct instruction: modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it. I would ask my students questions through the story. This would be great for a DR or RA. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
CaseyL I also posted about this book. I used a similar teaching strategy and I said it would be fun to use a RT! A DR would also be really cool for this RF story! 6y
ashley.v I love this book. I read it to the little girl I babysit all the time and she loves the parts where the little girl is trying to tell her dad that they forgot the bunny 6y

This John Newbery award winning book is wonderful for a CR. This book is a fun F book for children to read. This book has a number of short stories throughout the book. The Frog and Toad Together is a cute story that will help students learn different lessons. The stories are cute and fun to read. The link https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/frog-and-toad-... will take you to different

amyqualk Activities that you can do with your class. I would use UDL 3.2 highlight critical features and ESOL 10 teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups. These strategies will make the students pay more attention while they are reading the story. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This Caldecott award winning would be wonderful for a DR. This book is about a boy who is continuously getting into trouble. He has a lot of energy and his mom gets upset but of course she loves him. The link https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/No-David-Paper-bag-Puppet-2297560 this will take you to teachers pay teachers and it's a lesson plan. It does cost $2.00 but it's a cute project. This is a fun book for children to read.

amyqualk I would use UDL 1.3 alternatives for visual and ESOL 3 encourage self-talk (positive thinking) for this F book. This book is easy and fun for the children to read. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y
CaseyL I thought it was so interesting to learn that David Shannon wrote this story when he was only a child! I think it‘s so relatable for young children which is why it‘s such a great book for primary classroom libraries. 6y
Susancruz This book always reminds me of my 9th grade social studies teacher! His name aaa David so he read this in our first day! 6y
JordanHull I loved this book, this would make a great AS too. I could already see kids writing their own books after finding out that he was just a kid when he wrote this! Nice choice, great post 👍🏻 6y

This wonderful book is about an imaginary friend who waits for his turn to be chosen by a child but is continuously overlooked. He goes on a journey and ends up finding a match that names in Beekle. This Caldecott winning book is wonderful for a IR. This F book is wonderful for children who have a strong imagination. http://www.literaryhoots.com/2017/04/15-fun-extension-activities-for.html will take you to a site that shows how kids can make their

amyqualk Imaginary friend go on an adventure. I would use UDL 8.3 foster collaboration and community and ESOL 42 have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information. These are important while they are putting together their own imaginary friends journey. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This Caldecott award winning book is a F book that can be used for a DR or to storytell. The story is about a little boy who was sent to bed without supper. Max's room turned into a forest and took him on a journey. This book is one of my favorites. After students read this story they can use their imagination to figure out where they would want to be. The website http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/where-the-wild-things-are takes you to

amyqualk A website that has different teaching ideas for different subjects. I would use UDL 6.2 monitoring progress. I would use this to make sure the students are able to use their imagination when they are writing their short stories on where they would go. I would also use ESOL 6 continually monitor students' comprehension. This would be a great addition to any class library. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
Radams This has always been a favorite of mine. I really like your focus on getting students to connect their imagination to writing short stories, sounds like a great lesson! 6y

Martins Big Words is a wonderful B book written by Doreen Rappaport. This book could be used in the class as a IR. This book tells about Martin Luther Kings life and the things be believed. This book would be great for any classroom and for a lesson about past historical figures that changed the world. I would use UDL 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships and ESOL 2.4 incorporate culture & the language of second

amyqualk Language learners in your curriculum. The website http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/martin-words-thin... takes you the a RWT page that has lesson plans and classroom resources. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers is a Caldecott HF book. This book would be good for storytelling. The book talks about a man who walks between the twin towers in New York City. The story teaches a little bit of history about the twin towers. The man sees them when he is in the park and has to walk on a wire between the two. He knew that he wouldnt get away with it so he had to sneak up to the top of the twin towers and set up the wire

amyqualk I would use UDL 3.1 activate or supply background knowledge and ESOL 38 assign short reading for homework. The students will never know the significance of the twin towers and this could teach them an idea of what 9/11 was like and how important it is. The link takes you to a lesson plan https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/man-who-walked... definitely would recommend this for a class library. 6y

Mehso-so

Alistair in Outer Space is a SF book about a little boy who was taken into outer space by two Goots. The Goots really liked Alistair. This book would be wonderful for a IR or a PR. The students could work together to read and think about what they would do if something like this happened to them (even thought it's not real). It could be a fun activity for the students. I would use UDL 2.2 clarify syntax and structure

amyqualk I would also use ESOL 14 simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. This book has some strange words in it so I would make sure the students understood how to read the words. The link provided takes you to a YouTube video that reads the story out loud. http://youtu.be/WjNJu56Mnyc Alistair in Outer Space was a good book but not on my favorites list. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

The story Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! Is a F Caldecott award winning book written and illustrated by Mo Willems. This story is about a pigeon who wants to drive the bus. The bus driver had to leave the bus for a little while and wanted to make sure we don't let the pigeon drive the bus. It's a great book for storytelling in the class. I would use UDL strategy 5.3 support for practice and performance and ESOL strategy 22 give enough time

amyqualk For second language learners to respond to questions. I will have the students create an idea for storytelling and then ask them each questions about the book. The link provided take you to a website about the series of the pigeon books. http://pigeonpresents.com/books/dont-let-the-pigeon-drive-the-bus/ These would all be great books to have in your classroom library. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs written by Jon Scieszka is a TL book about the big bad wolf's side of the story with the three little pigs. The wolf was trying to cook a cake for his grandma's birthday and he didn't have sugar so he needed to ask his neighbors for some sugar. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't read this book. I would use this as a RT or storytelling in my class. I would use UDL 1.2 alternatives for audio

amyqualk And ESOL strategy 16 integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/true-story-3-l... The link attached will take you to a lesson plan from scholastic. The story is great for the students to listen to and then listen to the original tell of "The Three Little Pigs" then they can compare the two stories. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
DrSpalding Comparing the original to this version is a common activity. However it is also a good idea to use this book for point of view. The traditional tale is told from the perspective of the pigs while this one is from the point of view of the wolf. 6y
JordanD I haven't read this book but based on your review it sounds great! I bet this would be great to use with a history lesson comparing two different perspectives of the same event! Great review! 6y

She Persisted is a story about 13 American women who changed the world. This non-fiction book is written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. The story tells what each of the 13 women did and how they persisted to make their dreams and beliefs come true. I would use this in my class room as a read aloud. I would use UDL 5.2 tools for composition and construction and ESOL28 provide biographies of significant men and women from

amyqualk Different countries. After reading the story to the students I would have each of them go through the book and think about who they know that has persisted through something. The website linked will take you to another lesson you could do with the students. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/She-Persisted-Writing-Activity-and-B... #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a wonderful book about a town called the Protectorate. Every year this town sacrifices the youngest child to a witch named Xan. The people of Protectorate hope that by sacrificing the youngest child they will keep their town safe. However, Xan means no harm. When Xan took in the baby girl she fed her moonlight instead of starlight and the baby girl (Luna) became magical.

amyqualk This Newberry award winner is definitely a book you could use as a IR or an LC. I would use UDL 2.1 Clarify vocal and symbols and ESOL 13 use preview/ review activities. The website https://suzyred.com/The-Girl-Who-Drank-the-Moon.html will take you to different activities that you can do with your class. Wonder by RJ Palacio is a a great RF book about a boy who isn't like most children his age. He is an extraordinary person and not many people are willing to give him a chance. It is a great book to help teach children about being kind to one another. http://wonderwebbook.weebly.com/wonder-ful-activities.html

amyqualk The link takes you to different activities you can do with the book. I would use UDL strategy 1.3 alternatives for visual and ESOL strategy 6 continually monitor students' comprehension. The book Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin is a Caldecott Award winning picture book. This book is a F story that is super fun to read to your class. The book would be wonderful as a RA or a RT. You could have all the students join in when they say "Click, Clack, Moo". The UDL strategy I would use is 6.1 guide appropriate goal setting. This would be a wonderful book to read before they come up with a request from Farmer Brown.

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a wonderful book! This book was my favorite growing up. This book is a F story that all kids will love. The story is about a fish who didn't want to share his scales but he changed his ways and is happier for it. This book would be great for kids in a younger grade when they are learning how to share and make friends. I would use UDL 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships.

amyqualk And ESOL 2 promote cooperation (small groups) I would use these two so that the students can get into groups and talk with their peers what they think a friend is. I would use this in my class as a RT and I'm sure the kids would love it. It's crazy to think that this book has been around for 25 years! http://i.pinimg.com/1200x/91/ac/9d/91ac9d2845cd92103210378adf0811cb.jpg This link is a photo that you can do with your class #ucflae3414f17 7y

The book Sail Away, Little Boat is a P book about a little boy that makes a sail boat and the sail boat goes on a little journey and makes new friends. I would use this in my classroom for a dramatic reenactment and have all the students create their own little sail boats to have them sail away while we are reading our book. https://www.publishersweekly.com/978-1-57505-821-4

amyqualk this website gives you the option to buy the book and read the review. I would use UDL 4.1 vary the methods for response and navigation because they are making their own sail boats and ESOL 17provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions so that they can understand as much as possible. It's a cute little story. I loved it. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is a LF Christmas story. I would use this as a readers theater around Christmas time. I would serve hot chocolate and decorate my classroom like the train. I would use ESOL 14 and UDL 2.5. This book won the caldecott award back in 1986. It's a wonderful story about a boy who isn't sure if Santa was real and he got to take the Polar Express to see for himself.

amyqualk This book teaches kids not to give up on their dreams. The scholastic website linked below is a lesson plan you can use in your classroom. 7y
