Scholastic Warehouse Sale 2018: Haul 1 of 2. This is what my volunteer hours afforded me after one 8.5 hour shift. I took advantage of the BOGO Build a Box (24.95 for 2 boxes!) and used the remainder in the general sale section. After reading half of this book, I let it collect dust on my bedside table for 6 months. I‘m glad I picked it back up, although it wasn‘t extraordinary. McCourt isn‘t much of a role model for teachers, but he redeems himself through this honest account. Rising teachers will relate to his inner dialogue and fear of failure. I‘ll admit it‘s refreshing to read about a teacher who‘s less than perfect for once. Since when does their story get told?

I can‘t get enough of Mary Karr. Her memoirs are full of familiar, raw emotion. Attempting to read anyone else after 3 back to back Karr memoirs is trying, but I‘m doing my best to reset my expectations.

I am Abraham Lincoln by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos, is a biographical picture book that‘s perfect for a GR lesson. Students will make text-to-self connections when learning about Abe‘s childhood and his successes as the 16th POTUS. The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrations by Leonard Weisgard, is a P picture book that would be great for SR. The book would be a fantastic model for introducing a lesson on main idea & supporting details. Finding Winnie by Lindsay Mattick, illustrated by Sophie Blackall, is the Caldecott award winning NF telling of how the world‘s most famous bear came to exist. The Day the Crayons Quit written by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, is a F picture book full of beautiful illustrations and humorous text that won the E.B. White Read Aloud Award, and therefore would make a wonderful RA in the classroom. No fits, Nilson! by Zachariah OHora is a fun F picture book for RA in the classroom. Zachariah OHora‘s illustration style is simply mesmerizing and the characters will have students and teachers laughing out loud over their dramatic tantrums. Students will learn the benefits of controlling their emotions (even when they don't get the last banana ice cream).

I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen is a dark and humorous F picture book, winner of a Theodor Seuss Geisel award and E.B. White Read Aloud award, that would make a fun RT in the classroom. The humor of Jon‘s Hat Series is adored by both children and adults, and there are enough characters to include lots of students in the script. Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is a classic P anthology full of humorous and relevant poems that children adore, best used for GR. Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña is beautifully written RF book that has won a Corretta Scott King Award, a Caldecott AND a Newbery Medal. It would make a wonderful RA to celebrate diversity in your classroom. Wonder by R.J. Palacio is the best RF YA novel I‘ve ever read, which explains its #1 spot on the NYTBS list for 36 weeks, and would make a WONDERful LC or IR choice. Auggie‘s courageous spirit is inspiring to both children with disabilities and to those without, changing their perspective on how they treat others. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs written by Jon Scieszka (illustrated by Lane Smith) is a hilarious MF picture book, great for S in the classroom. The book portrays the classic fairy tale from Alexander T. Wolf's perspective, and is a great mentor text to teach about point of view. #UCFLAE3414F17

The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney is a beautifully illustrated TL book (great for GR), which has won a Caldecott Medal, NYT Best Illustrated book, and a BG Horn Book Award. Jerry's version of this classic Aesop fable is a nearly wordless picture book, which can be a wonderful resource for your #ClassroomLibrary when thoughtfully introduced to students. #UCFLAE3414F17

The Duckling Gets a Cookie?! by Mo Willems is the perfect RA F book to share with your students. Although Mo claims that his books are not meant to be instructive, there is a lesson to be learned from each book in this best-selling series. In this particular story, kids learn how asking for something nicely is the best way to get what they want (a skill the pigeon has yet to learn).

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, illustrated by Patricia Castelao, is a fantastic Newbery Award-Winning F novel to add to your #ClassroomLibrary and makes a wonderful LC choice.
