Mythos
Mythos: A Retelling of the Myths of Ancient Greece | Stephen Fry
PREORDER Mythos, to be one of the first to discover Stephen Fry's magnificent retelling of the greatest myths and legends, ever told . . . No one loves and quarrels, desires and deceives as boldly and brilliantly as Greek gods and goddesses. They are like us, only more so - their actions and adventures scrawled across the heavens above. From the birth of the universe to the creation of humankind, Stephen Fry - who fell in love with these stories as a child - retells these myths for our tragic, comic, fateful age. Witness Athena born from the cracking open of Zeus's great head and follow Persephone down into the dark realm of Hades. Experience the terrible and endless fate of Prometheus after his betrayal of Zeus and shiver as Pandora opens her jar of evil torments. The Greek gods are the best and worst of us, and in Stephen Fry's hands they tell us who we are. Mythos - smart, funny, and above all great fun - is the retelling we deserve by a man who has been entertaining the nation for over four decades.

“Sorrowing at the death of her beloved servant, Hera took Argus‘s hundred bright eyes and fixed them onto the tail of a very dull, dowdy old fowl, transforming it into what we know today as the peacock—which is how the now proud, colorful, and haughty bird came forever to be associated with the goddess.” 🦚

Dammit, Stephen Fry, you got me to rejoin Audible. You and your fancy, plummy, velvety smooth voice, you devil.

Aimeesue @jillrhudy made me jealous when she got a copy, then I listened to this Guardian Books podcast (In Which Stephen Fry Reads A Bit of a Book): https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-guardian-books-podcast/id168200814?i=1... (edited) 1w

Linsy Listening to that one right now! So good!! 1w
ljuliel That sounds like me. I stop Audible due to expense , thinking I‘ll just borrow library audiobooks, then Audible has a new one that I really want, and the library wait is 6 months, so I join back up again and again. I think I should just keep my membership since resistance is futile. 1w
Aimeesue @ljuliel Audible is half price for the first 3 months right now, which was a major factor. But really, ONE audiobook a month + some pretty lame Audible Originals? I doubt I'll keep the membership past 3 months. I have 6 Library cards, though (local counties reciprocate with mine) so I don't usually have to wait very long for ebooks or audiobooks. Aid I don't audio listen that often. Still have tons of audio bks from the last time I was a member! 1w
ljuliel Yes, I have hundreds I have yet to listen to. I know one book a month isn‘t much, but when I see how much kindle books are now, they‘re both about the same cost for me. I usually read on kindle if not audio. It‘s kind of a toss up. It‘d be best to use only the library, money-wise . 1w

My #20BooksBy2020 Update: Added another book early this morning! Stephen Fry is hilarious 😆 His narration was superb 🙌🏻 I absolutely ♥️ listening to his explanation of the Greek Myths. This was a great audio to dip in and out of. I feel like I learnt a lot of cool factoid trivia. Highly recommend as an audio 🎧
PS: made a few changes to my 20 picks as I‘m still waiting for a box of books to arrive from States that I sent in August 🤬

Fry covers the Greek origin myths from creation through the Titans and then the major gods plus a lot of fun smaller ones like the Muses. As always he has a gentle wry style with the odd pop culture reference or double entendre. A light and easy way to read about Greek myths. I think I‘ll get the next one on audio though because his voice is 😍.

Hestapleton Way to set a PB! Sounds like a great week to me! 3mo
sudi You did so great on your goals especially the yoga one 👏👏👏. But i'm intrigued by the cow story, how did almost get chased by a cow? 3mo
Hufflepuffle @sudi @jenniferw88 @IndoorDame On my usual route there is this big field which often has cows. There is a group of new young cows (with horns) and one was just staring me down. I carried on warily and it started pawing the ground with its hooves and edging towards me. So me being me waved at it and introduced myself and talked to it hoping it would realise I‘m not a threat but surprisingly that didn‘t help! 3mo
Hufflepuffle @sudi @jenniferw88 @IndoorDame so I kinda froze while it stared me down and then decided I would edge slowly away and out of the field. It stared me down the whole time but luckily it didn‘t come after me! As I went I was trying to decided whether I would make it to the gate quicker than it would get to me!! 3mo
sudi @Hufflepuffle sounds scary, that is one mean cow. You should probably not wave at it the next time you go through the same route, what if she remembers you ? 3mo
IndoorDame eeek! Glad you got by safely. Hopefully you won't need to negotiate any more bovine peace treaties on future runs. 3mo

Managed to get an #audiowalk in before the rain came.... went to the Post Office to send some #bookmail.

I think I‘m finally starting to enjoy listening to a book rather than reading it. This is my first ever audio book and my 3rd audio walk. I really wasn‘t sure at first but now I‘m getting into it. I‘ve chosen This is Going to Hurt as my next one - what do you all think? It might be more attention grabbing?

IamIamIam It's a great alternative when you can't just sit and read. I've found great books I probably wouldn't have picked up if the library didn't have it available on audio. Narrators are key so don't feel bad if they just don't catch you. There are lots to choose from! 6mo

To my mind, this is everything a retelling of ancient myths should be. It has personality, humour and a lot of references to modern life, such as how the Greek gods have given us certain words. If you don't add something of yourself to the myths, then you're simply copying, which is pointless.

Lemme start by saying that despite his charms I often find Stephen Fry to be a pompous, problematic snob. HOWEVER, if I was ever gonna let him give me a lecture it‘d be on this subject. And it‘s a good instinct! Fry loves these stories and his love breathes all the life into them they deserve. Funny, unpretentious, accessible, and entertaining.
