The Word Is Murder | Anthony Horowitz
A wealthy woman strangled six hours after she's arranged her own funeral. A very private detective uncovering secrets but hiding his own. A reluctant author drawn into a story he can't control. What do they have in common? Unexpected death, an unsolved mystery and a trail of bloody clues lie at the heart of Anthony Horowitz's page-turning new thriller. SPREAD THE WORD. THE WORD IS MURDER.

This was a character driven mystery that reminded me of classic Agatha Christie. There wasn‘t a lot of gore or heart thumping action, but the story was well written and offered a very unexpected twist at the end. It took a while to really connect to the characters, but the story was appealing enough that I will read more by Horowitz. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

bexreadsbooks I loved Magpie Murders by this author! Definitely recommend if you haven‘t read that one already 1mo

I almost NEVER reread a book. However, I just re-listened to “The Word Is Murder” in anticipation of the sequel, “The Sentence Is Death.” I actually liked it better this time because between ‘listens‘ I have watched several of the TV shows referenced in the book. It wasn‘t essential to the plot, just made it more fun. Looking forward to the sequel!

Anthony Horowitz is new favorite writer for me, top 10 for sure. Magpie Murders was clever and The Word is Murder is even more so, Anthony is an actual character in his own book. Look forward to reading the second book in this series and other Horowitz's books.

Horowitz writes the story of Anthony Horowitz shadowing an ex-police detective Hawthorne as he solves the murder of a woman killed the same day she planned her funeral. Some fun playing of tropes and the 4th wall, but every time Horowitz grumbled about how “this isn‘t how I would write this if I were writing a novel” I got bored. Just because he called something out himself, doesn‘t mean I‘ll give him a pass. Hope he skips that in future books.

I had a hard time getting into this mystery. It was very different having the author write himself into the story and be the narrator. The style just seemed somewhat pretentious. Though I will say that it did keep me in the dark regarding who committed the murder. This just wasn‘t the right murder mystery for me.

Lcsmcat I too found the breaking of the fourth wall to be distracting. 4mo

This novel is told from the first person viewpoint of Anthony Horowitz. He refers to his previous work, his agent, and his family. I am curious if his family is onboard with this structure. Horowitz is partnered with a detective to write the story of his murder investigation. His detective, Hawthorne, is repulsive yet interesting. I had a delightful few hours reading, and I intend to read the next book in the series.

I read this between June 20 & July 7. I gave it 4 ⭐️ on Good Reads. It‘s a clever re-interpretation of the Holmes-Watson dynamic with Horowitz taking on the role of Watson. One of the better murder mysteries that I have read this year.

A fun twist on the classic murder mystery. Horowitz makes himself a character in role of a sidekick to the investigator following along as he tries to solve the mystery. Kept me guessing to the end and loved all the references to Horowitz other work such as Foyle‘s war. Looking forward to the next Hawthorne book. #audiobook #bfc #bfcr2. I just couldn‘t with this one, guys. It made a big deal about a subject I‘m not too fond of and the pacing was so. Slooww.
I simultaneously enjoyed the descriptions and almost fell asleep/overall generally annoyed by the long windedness. I stopped 1/2 through and idk. I‘d rather read a book I will actually enjoy instead of just painfully reading this one and it throwing me off my reading game. 🧐

TiffanyMichele Also Horowitz didn‘t make me care about annnnyyyyy of the characters at all. When our MCS are talking it almost feels like more descriptions... I was kinda waiting for Horowitz and Hawthorne to kick a puppy or something. Ugh. 6mo

I appreciated “The Word is Murder” more than I liked it. The whodunnit aspect of this book was fun, but I didn‘t enjoy the conceit of the author being a main character. Author Anthony Horowitz wrote about his protagonist, author Anthony Horowitz, meeting Steven Spielberg…it was a little too cute for me. I think I‘ll give the rest of this series a miss, but then again, the actual mystery was fun so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I picked this up the minute it was out because I LOVED The Magpie Murders. And then I heard really mixed reviews so I let it sit on the shelf. And then picked it up and read it in a day. I can understand why people were disappointed in it but for me, making himself the protagonist was such a fresh take on the traditional murder mystery really worked. Looking forward to more!

I loved this clever murder mystery. It‘s written from the point of view of the author trying to write a book about the case. A woman plans her own funeral & is murdered in her home later that day. A cranky, rude detective is hired to consult with the police on the case. There were fun random scenes, like those with Peter Jackson & Spielberg, and the whole thing was entertaining start to finish. I cared more about the characters than the mystery.

The conceit is that the actual author is compelled to involve himself as a chronicler of a police consultant‘s case; the story is well plotted, reader clues fairly played, but I just hated the snarky tone of this fiction. Both author and consultant were unlikeable, at least to me. The only saving graces are the author‘s digressions into his writing life and the film industry. As I freelance a bit in film jobs, the Spielberg meeting was a hoot!

gradcat I really agree with your take on this book, but I think I liked the plot a bit more than you did. However, the “conceit” that you refer to almost drove me crazy—it seemed like such a gimmick to me. (edited) 10mo

I really liked this book. I was surprised by the murderer and the motive, but the clues were there all along. The idea of the author being a character in his own book was really interesting and different (this is the only thing I‘ve read of his, so I don‘t know any of his references to his own work but still cool). The character of hawthorn was definitely unlikable but it worked.
