I've read several of Kingsolver's books and it's not the most exciting, I'd give that to The Poisonwood Bible, but the story is solid and made me curious about the real Mary Treat. It is clearly trying to connect the Vineland story to current events, which is a little weak, and gets preachy at times, but overall I enjoyed it.

Told by way of a dual timeline, the story of two families living in a ramshackle old house now and in the 1800s. There were parallels between the difficulty many have in accepting change in society and status, and scientific thought, then as now. I loved Thatcher‘s neighbour, real life scientist Mary Treat, and the strong female characters. This didn‘t grab me at first, but slowly grew on me until I realised I was thinking about it all day!

Rachel.Rencher That's exactly how I felt about it, too! Great review. 3mo

Switching from ebook to audiobook was the only way I could get through this book. I had high hopes for this one but thought it was only ok. Other members of my bookclub agreed that the political and environmental issues addressed in the story were heavy handed and more like a lecture. That being said, we all really enjoyed Mary Treat and would like to know more about her.

#NatBookFest

Samplergal I loved it. I‘ve heard mixed reviews, but it struck a chord in my heart. 5mo
Aimeesue @Samplergal She talked about the real people behind one strand of the story. Mary Treat sounds amazing! And the guy who founded Vineland, NJ sounds a right horror show. Charles K. Landis owned pretty much everything, was a millionaire "land developer," made it a dry town, and shot the paper's editor in the head, in broad daylight, and was found not guilty. Hmmmmm. Remind you of anyone? (edited) 5mo
lynneamch Wasn't she super? She said, "A novel is the territory of the human psche." I've loved every on of her novels and definitely putting this one on my tbr. #NatBookFest 5mo

Aimeesue @lynneamch She was fabulous! @tpixie It was a GREAT day! Really, really crowded, though! But that's a good thing, over all. Just not when I need to use the restroom. 😄 5mo
tpixie @Aimeesue glad it was fun!!! Yes short lines to the bathroom or better! Especially when there are other places to go stand in line!! 5mo
Aimeesue @tpixie I'm incredibly lucky in that I live in the area so I get to go every year. This is the biggest crowd I've seen there, but I'd bet that RBG was a big reason for that. It's SO much fun, though! 5mo
Samplergal @Aimeesue LOL. It does remind me of someone.... 🤡 5mo
Aimeesue @Samplergal She was pretty clear about that resemblance. ??? And she also said that the book is kind of a défense of Millenials - people talk about Millennials "ruining" everything (paper napkins, golf, homeownership, "and, I don't know, avocados?") which, given what we've left them to deal with makes no sense! Wow 😮 this one has so many different opinions.
I absolutely loved it. I thought the two storylines were great: 2 new scientific paradigms that people didn‘t want to accept (Darwin and climate change), feminism, patriarchy/rise of the right wing.
And the house just falling apart.

Totally get that folks found this one tedious. It‘s painfully pedantic at times & the protagonist frankly drove me nuts. But there‘s a whole feminist scientist theme going on that was fab, plus I‘ve gotta “pick” it just for the Jersey locale!

A house and a way of life that both turn out to be without foundations. This is the second book of hers that I've read and, to my surprise, loved. I can't bear being lectured in a novel and she certainly doesn't pull any didactic punches. Yet still I feel, reading her, that I'm in a safe pair of hands. I haven't got to the bottom of why I'll let her preach so: the characters? the satisfying patterning of her prose? She is GOOD, is all I can say.

This was a “low and slow” book for me. I didn‘t consume it in great, greedy gulps, I savored it and let it simmer. It has all of the classic hallmarks of a Kingsolver novel - science, nature, politics, humanism, family. It was like a big comforting bowl of soup.

I want to have Barbara Kingsolver‘s baby. All the elements of a BK book are here: science & nature, complex characters & relationships, living & dying, past & future, disappointment & hope. Grown up stories for grown up readers. I mostly enjoyed the ways she wove the two story lines together, focusing on residents of one New Jersey town from two different centuries. Her lilting narration on the audio was a bonus for me. Which BK book to read next?

I hate reading something by a favorite author and not loving it. The good news is, I did not hate this book; but, it was a huge disappointment. The two story lines did not gel for me as I believe they were intended. While I see the parallels meant to weave the two plots into one, it just didn't work.

While social commentary is expected from BK, it did feel very heavy handed in this book. It made the conversations feel forced and unnatural.

Cinfhen Felt the same way!! Very disappointing. Expected MORE & BETTER from this author 9mo

I was a bit nervous after a few lukewarm reviews on Litsy, but never fear, for me Kingsolver did not disappoint! I absolutely loved this book, which reminded me a bit of The Lacuna in its return to historical fiction, yet of course it's different because of the alternating present-day time-line. So many themes are close to my heart: reading the Bible responsibly and not as a scientific text, the environment, consumerism, waste... Gorgeous.

I am surprised that I‘m bailing. I really liked the idea of sheltered and unsheltered and what that can mean to different people. But, 1. I didn‘t enjoy her narration and 2. it seemed overwritten in places & “lectury” in effect on various topics. The struggle is real!! I‘ve joined the library book club and totally dislike this month‘s selection. The author went from one topic to another in different time periods. Darwinism and politics mixed with unlikeable characters make for a long read. #booknerd #bookaddict #bookaddiction #bookclub #twothumbsdown 👎🏻👎🏻

Chelleo Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it but I find the best book discussions are usually based on books people don't like :) 10mo
Bookwm85forever @Chelleo Very true! I‘m hoping for some interesting discussion tonight. The age group in the club is quite diverse. 10mo
