The Psychology of Time Travel
The Psychology of Time Travel | Kate Mascarenhas
1967: Four female scientists invent a time-travel machine. They are on the cusp of fame: the pioneers who opened the world to new possibilities. But then one of them suffers a breakdown and puts the whole project in peril... 2017: Ruby knows her beloved Granny Bee was a pioneer, but they never talk about the past. Though time travel is now big business, Bee has never been part of it. Then they receive a message from the future a newspaper clipping reporting the mysterious death of an elderly lady... 2018: When Odette discovered the body she went into shock. Blood everywhere, bullet wounds, flesh. But when the inquest fails to answer any of her questions, Odette is frustrated. Who is this dead woman that haunts her dreams? And why is everyone determined to cover up her murder?

I finished my first book of 2023! This is a clever and thought-provoking sci-fi mystery that is unlike any other time travel book I‘ve ever read. At the centre of the story is a classic locked room mystery but this book is so much more as it explores how time travel affects time travellers and what sort of culture they may develop. Original and enjoyable!

Had a migraine today so I've mostly been listening to the audiobook of The Psychology of Time Travel, a murder mystery with a time travel twist. I really like it! Luckily I perked up enough to make some ravioli for dinner. #20in4 #readathon

Having looked up reviews for this one I was a bit sceptical. However I really really enjoyed it . A story of strong female leads and time travel, a murder mystery and a little romance. Not my usual choice of genre but a book I will be returning to in the future 🥰 5 stars for me ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

2.5⭐️ - this was a quick read, but just not my cup of tea. I liked seeing how the stories overlapped with one another, but didn‘t feel overly invested. #doublespin for January - now I can delete it from my Kindle. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I enjoyed this book, and wasn't expecting to because I don't seem to like speculative fiction. It had a really interesting exploration of time travel and the rules governing travelers. I also thought the characters were interesting and I'm always delighted to find queer representation in random books I pick up. I grabbed this as a Hoopla Bonus Borrow last month. #LGBTQ #TimeTravel #SpeculativeFiction

My partner read this book and isn't a big reader but when he told me how much he loved this book, of course I had to read it! Bloody incredible, granted I don't know how the candybox returned to the place it did at the end of the book (please can someone explain it??) The rest of the plot was gripping. I found the time lines easier to follow than I thought and my god was I desperate to find out what happened to Margaret 5 Stars all the way!

I had high hopes for this book, but was sadly disappointed. It jumps forwards and backwards in time (which I have enjoyed in books in the past) and flits from one character to another with complete disregard for the reader. I was left trying to work out what on earth is going on. It does make an attempt to explain the reasoning behind why things are able to happen, but in a complicated and seemingly meaningless manor. Not one I would recommend.

I was intrigued with this novel initially but as time went on the plot started going awry. It became less about time travel and the central mystery and more about relationships, and my interest started to wane early.

The further I got the more convoluted and nonsensical for me and I just stopped caring about the characters. The central mystery was eventually solved but by then I was just sick of everything.

When my partner asked how I knew I hadn‘t read the tagged book in another dimension, I told him that if we were going down that route, then thanks to time travel, I have read it, but I‘ve read it in about 2 weeks time. And the Siri made the most sensible statement of the whole debate....

#35 just now realizing that this is a work of fiction so unfortunately it will not count towards my goodreads goal of reading “smart books” 🙇🏻‍♀️ but I‘m still going to enjoy it and If I could time travel right now I‘d still go to a Nirvana concert and mosh while Kurt Cobain sang his heart out 🖤

Caffeinated_Reader That was awesome. Yes the way the book was edited made it annoying to read at times, but, it was worth finishing. For a time traveling book of fiction I thought it was well done. It didn‘t end like a dream or in any way I thought it might, which was wonderful. 5y

It's a weird fluke that I picked this up on the first weekend in a while where my mental health was just horrible. It's less about time travel and more about a murder mystery, how complex relationships get with time travel, and how businesses and companies handle mental health. It's a medium to slower pace so it may not be for everyone and it's definitely not a high sci-fi time travel book but I did really enjoy this.

pythoness I genuinely loved how the author handled the mental health aspect of this book, tbh? It felt very real, to me. And the whole book in general was damn good, really. 5y

I liked this book, but I did not love it. It was fun, character driven, almost 100% female, LGBTQ representation, and a fun genre crossing premise of mystery and sci fi elements. I did not love how some things were over simplified or “given” to work in the story. @cobwebmoth this will be heading back to you in next couple days. I really enjoyed this #LMPBC group and appreciated reading with all of you!

I‘ve been reading a lot lately (even if I haven‘t posted much) and this is one of the few books that I feel the need to mention.

I just finished this novel in one sitting, and it was—quite frankly—fantastic. The way it unraveled was unusual and kept me hooked, and I was both surprised and delighted when one of the main characters turned out to be a lesbian.

Definitely recommended, especially if you‘re sick of tragic queer endings.

“Grace‘s complaints reminded Ruby of her own feelings about university friends. People you‘d once die for take appalling paths. It‘s not that they become unrecognizable. This is such an interesting read. In the 60s a group of four women invent time travel. After a few trips one has a mental breakdown and is hospitalized. From there we jump around in time to other characters‘ POV and look at how the Time Conclave stigmatizes mental health issues. There‘s also a murder mystery? Could be uncomfortable read if triggered by bad opinions of mental health, but the author is a psychologist so the topics are in good hands

This book was just okay to me. I could tell it was a debut novel and I found the writing to be uninteresting and very young adult. I did still give this one a 3/5 stars, but probably would have DNF‘d it if it wasn‘t for #lmpbc.

A note for those reading the book after me: the binding is very loose at the bottom of the book. It seems that no matter how I held the book, pages started popping out. Be careful!

I was quite disappointed. The concept is good - brilliant women scientists pioneer a method of time travel. The biggest problem for me was the lack of time travel. Instead The story revolves around the wooden characters with a meandering plot line. Blah. But the cover design is nice.

Great addition to the time travel/sci-fi genre. Through an almost all female cast, Mascarenhas delivers a brilliant and page turning murder mystery with a squad of female scientists, queer romance, and beautiful tales of ambition, betrayal and love.

New Book! Time travel is now possible but it comes with many mysteries and drawbacks. This novel traces the arc of the 4 women pioneers as they travel throughout time and wrestle with their places both in and out of their respective timelines. This is a mystery of a murder that hasn't happened yet and what that means to time travel.

I went into this with high expectations based on recommendations, but sadly it didn't really work for me. I found the first half pedestrian - the prose style kept me distanced from the characters and made the events seem reported (and not in a particularly interesting way) - so I found it rather frustrating. I became more engaged in the second half, but it never entirely won me over. Some really interesting thoughts on time travel tho!

shanaqui Aw no, this one had a pretty cover IIRC (embroidery patterns?). I was hoping for something good! 5y
imyril @shanaqui it does have a pretty cover and honestly, your mileage may vary - lots of people I often overlap with absolutely loved it. But... meh? The psychology is interesting but the storytelling didn‘t work for me 5y

Has anyone else been having trouble with goodreads lately? It takes forever for things like “my books” to load. And when I try and pull up lists (I use the YA of whatever year list pretty heavily) it often doesn‘t load my rating if I‘ve read the book. Or other lists won‘t load the visual of the average rating. It‘s little things, but it‘s driving me batty. I‘m noticing it on both mobile and my laptop.

Great ideas, but not well executed.

All of the main characters were women, and this could have been so good. Sadly, the prose style was so plain as to be dull, and I just did not care about what was going to happen.

I loved this book! How do you deal with the psychology of time travel? The flexibility of concepts of death, predetermination and how the past and future impact each other? Dealing with mental illness, heartbreak, jealousy, grief, revenge… our protagonists learn that there is a whole lot more to jumping through time than just science and paradox. It is an amazing story that will tickle your fancy and tug at your heartstrings.
