@Laughterhp @Catsandbooks @Meshell1313
Legendborn has made it back home safe and sound!
Thank you @5feet.of.fury @mrsmarch and @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks for such a fun round of #LMPBC ! I had a wonderful time and I can‘t wait to look through all of your notes! 💖
So far I‘ve finished 4 books in 2024, 2 audio & 2 physical! I just finished Legendborn last night for #lmpbc & OH BOY is it a rollercoaster! In a good way! Also, Baba Yaga for #auldlangspine — I loved it but sometimes felt like I didn‘t understand Baba, but I decided that was because she was not speaking to me at that moment. Maybe she‘d make better sense if the question was more relevant, so this is a good dip in and out over time book.
Guess what both showed up today! The good news is that it seems like @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks is okay! I had been worried! But now I need to figure out where Legendborn should go. Should I read it quickly - immediately - and send it to Becky, or should I send it on and then let it come back to me? Option 1 almost sounds more logical - take advantage while it is here. Then I will read Lavinia and send it to @BookmarkTavern . . . .
I ate this up. So good.
The world building 👩🏼🍳💋
I‘m going to need to get into book 2 QUICKLY, I‘m so glad this ended up in our #lmpbc group because I heard great things but kept passing it by (I keep saying I don‘t like YA, my reviews beg to differ)
@BookmarkTavern @mrsmarch @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks
When Bree learns there may be more to her mother‘s death & of the existence of a secret society of reborn Arthurian knights, everything she knew comes into question.
I really loved this. The twining together of Arthurian myths & an examination of past & present racism in the US & grief & self discovery was so well done. I‘m less a fan of cliffhanger endings & a very quick romance, but I‘m so excited for the second one! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I‘ve got two Arthurian options and one Greek! Any of these look interesting to you? @mrsmarch @5feet.of.fury
#LMPBC #GroupG
Opened my #mws today and to my surprise my sister got me as a swap! I got the book I‘ve been wanting and I already put on the nails 💅 thanks @Catsandbooks for the goodies and thanks @BookwormAHN for hosting!
This may be spoilery but I'm trying to work out the characters here. Legendborn have a secret society which fights demons (Shadowborn); they are descended from the Round Table. Onceborn are humans.
There are 13 Lines descended from knights and they can take Onceborn Pages and Squires who become part of the society. There are also Vassal families who don't get involved in the fighting but are pledged in service to one of the Lines.
More-ish; enjoying this. I'm not keen on the instances of intolerance Deonn creates for 16 yo black-American Bree (starting at Early College, Uni of North Carolina), though I understand why the author put it in (I feel it detracts from the story). It's not contributing to the story (yet)*
Bree saw something supernatural and has now stumbled on the secret society called the Order of the Round Table which we are now (ch 9) discovering more about
So good! Awesome premise, perfectly paced, and touches on many important topics that just enhance the story even more.
Just me finishing another reread of my favorite book❤️❤️ I‘ve actually lost count how many times I‘ve read this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
For some time, I‘ve been wantonly recommending this book without having read it, solely because of a couple of friends who spoke very highly of it! One of those friends is my former English professor, who‘s a medievalist & an Arthurian scholar—when she said it‘s one of the best modern Arthurian-influenced fantasies she‘s read in a long time, I took note. And I‘m glad I did (I hope my other recommendees are as well). This was a fascinating take ⤵️
Secret societies, hidden magic, and an unflinching look at grief and family loss. Our black protagonist winds up in a secret society run by old-money white families, and all the racism and status struggles that implies. A fascinating through-line in the book of legacy and how that looks different between plotted genealogies and families interrupted by slavery. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Gah. BOUGHS. Trees have BOUGHS. Not bows.
#Two4Tuesday
1. School starts Monday
2. Tagged book is a recent favorite with a school setting. Second book in the series, Bloodmarked, is even better. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson is another great one (& the start of a fun series). And, the graphic novel Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang chronicling a high school basketball team‘s season was compelling & surprisingly emotional—maybe I was a little teary by the end.😬
@TheSpineView
A modern day twist on the legend of King Arthur and the round table, filled with grief, loss and growth. I wasn‘t sure I was going to like this book despite the rave reviews at first, and then it even ended with my biggest book irk and set up for a sequel (I don‘t know why, but I like first books to be able to stand alone) but I still loved it and can‘t wait to read the second. It‘s ya in the way I needed a good ya story.
I adored this book! I‘m so glad I read it! Finally working my way through my bingo card! #spinbingo #doublespinbingo
I saved this for summer holiday and hooooooo boy it was FANTASTIC. Believe the hype. A retelling ish of the Arthur legends but in modern times with some romance and tacking real issues like race and generational trauma, this book is also just fun and exciting too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved this book! It was so good and enjoyable! I loved the way that Tracy Deonn wrote it. It was amazing! The only thing that I didn‘t love was the tiny print in the book. But that was it. Everything else was incredible! 5/5⭐️
Whilst reading in the pool I‘ve officially made it to part 3! #achievingboolgoals
I started reading Legendborn a little more than a few weeks ago, and had a few things getting in the way of my daily reading! I‘m 1/3 of the way through the book and it‘s very diverse. I really recommend it! I continued reading it last night and again, just like every time, I‘m hooked on the book. It‘s YA, and I love it because it really speaks about the modern world. A way for me to understand the world just through a book. :)
This was my #bookspin for April and I loved it! It took a turn in the middle that I was unsure about and normally avoid, but I am so glad I stayed with it. This turned into a 5⭐ read for me! Now to get the next in the series...
@TheAromaofBooks
Really enjoying this listen. It was alittle hard for me to get into at first.... but now I'm invested!!
Ok I didn't plan on buying any books today.....but erm..... I went into the works and they called to me 😅 in my defense I needed a new puzzle book haha. @Cupcake12
Wow. I never imagined a book could twist and turn like this one and now I need the second one.
I have my lofi-hiphop playlist going on in the background and my next book ready for what I hope to turn into a late night reading session! I‘ve already started on the first few pages and I‘m hooked!!!🦉📚💖 #legendborn #latenightreading #fantasyYA
The first 1/3 was a bit slow and confusing for me, but im glad I stuck with it. Rad story, and so so much development (characters, plot, social analogy) - in fact, this is probably why I didn‘t like the beginning- everything felt too “one note”, and then BAM the whole thing just happens! Maybe this coulda been written differently, I dno. I almost let it go but decided to stay after reading some reviews, so thanks y‘all, keep up the good work 🫡
Getting my 2023 Book Release whiteboard started.
Light Bringer, Red Rising 6, and The Brothers Hawthorne, a new The Inheritance Games book are among my most anticipated along with Hell Bent on Tuesday.
Reading Legendborn right now and absolutely loving it.
Congrats @wanderinglynn that‘s so exciting!! 🥳🎉 I‘m still new to Litsy and I‘d love to have Legend Born by Tracy Deonn #300kbirthdaygiveaway
@BarbaraJean Thank you so much for these wonderful gifts! Also, I received Olivia Twist in the mail last night. That was so sweet to gift me that as well! I hope your holidays are filled with happiness and love and your new year as well.
@MaleficentBookDragon thank you so much for hosting #jolabokaflodswap
Finished book 90 of the year! In this story, the legend of King Arthur lives through the bloodlines of the original knights to their present-day descendants. However, Deonn makes the story even better with a black heroine. Briana suffers the loss of her mother while struggling to find a place in her own university and the Order itself. It adds reality to the fantasy - how discrimination persists today. I need more reminders if what I don‘t know.
Having a black female main character that I can relate to was already an amazing thing to me. But the characters and concepts in itself is interesting and complex. The book kept me wanting to read more and the fact that it centers around a character within an unfamiliar environment made me relate even more. Bree, the main character, does seem to lack sympathy to others situations but it could either just be her age or her own trauma.
I loved characters and I really could relate to them. I felt for them.
This was magical and mysterious, I really loved the atmosphere with dark tunnels and woods.
This was long book, there is no denying it, but there happened something all the time and that kept reading interesting.
#SeriesRead2022
Reread this one and it's still just as amazing as before!! I think Tracy does such an amazing job at creating characters that are both flawed and in pain, and loveable. Bree is such an amazing character and her growth is 💯. Likewise, the world and #magic building is so well thought out. EVERYTHING counts for something and I was always engaged. Also, Sel 💕💕 #arthurian #fantasy #family
My #November reading! It was a busy month, but I‘m proud of how many books I got through. Reviews are forthcoming, but I‘m a bit behind on my website. 😅
#novemberwrapup
This is an interesting fantasy, and I loved the magical world building around the King Arthur legend. There is a side romance between Bree and Nick. Luckily they don't proceed to a sexual romance, because Bree is far too young for that. A larger focus is Bree discovering her place in the world, and exploring her grief over her mother's recent death. This book also had a fair amount of action, especially at the end. 3.5 stars
Every bit as good the second time as it was the first and now I‘m even more excited to read the sequel. I also really enjoyed the short story from Selwyn‘s POV. This is a really, really smart YA urban fantasy and its mix of Arthurian legend, Black Girl Magic and southern Black culture is not only an adrenaline rush but also a really thoughtful exploration of grief, loss, power, identity and more. Can‘t wait to see what happens next!
Sequel is out on Tuesday which means a reread of the tagged book is in order… I really enjoyed this book the first time I read it and I‘m definitely excited to see where Deonn takes the story in the second book.
