Where the Wild Things Are | Maurice Sendak
post image
Pickpick

This modern fantasy book by Maurice Sendak is one of my all time favorites. Great for use in the classroom by RA, S, GR, or SR. AWESOME!! It has now been made into a movie!!!! (I‘ve seen the movie, it‘s great). This book is about a boy named Max who‘s bedroom transforms into a forest in the middle of the night. He then meets many “wild things” and makes new friends. Imagination is key when it comes to this book. #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro UDL 2.5 allows students to illustrate images that go along with the site above. EL strategy 46 is great because it allows students to use hands on activities and open their imaginations to the book😃 6y
juliette_kathleen This book sounds so interesting! And the crafts look awesome! I really need to read this because as you‘ve explained this looks like a great one for the classroom! 6y

Such an inspiring book! Brown Girl Dreaming is a poetry book written as a novel. It is based on the author Jacqueline Woodson‘s childhood. I would use this book as a RA, or IR. A RA would be most effective because you would be able to discuss each poem with the class and get their point of views. Awesome poetry book to include in your classroom. #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro Great lesson from read write think! Used to study the civil rights era. http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/exploring-perspec... 6y
V.DeQuattro UDL 2.2 will help students understand the syntax and structure of the poems. EL strategy 27 will allow students to use headings to describe each poem and read larger print to clarify vocabulary and take notes. 6y

The girl who drank the moon is a SF story written by Kelly Barnhill. I would use this book as a LC, or IR. This book is about good witches, evil witches, and the people of the protectorate. They leave baby Luna to the witch so they won‘t get terrorized by her. But Luna ends up getting feed moonlight instead of starlight. Read to find out what happens to Luna and the rest of the town. #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro This website includes a description of the book & tons of activities to go along with it. It includes everything from coloring pages to jeopardy! https://suzyred.com/The-Girl-Who-Drank-the-Moon.html 6y
V.DeQuattro Great UDL strategy would be 8.3 which is used for literature circles. EL strategy 50 would be great for students to use KWL Charts, learning logs, and strip stories. 6y
AndreaG This one is sitting on my pile of books to read. SF isn‘t a genre I love, but I‘m trying to be sure I read a variety so I can give good options to my students. 6y

V.DeQuattro I‘m not a big fan of SF either but this was a good one! @AndreaG 6y
paulettevp I think that many people were surprised when my literature circle didn‘t like the book. However, I can see how you can use it in the classroom with students for RA, GR, or SR and not just IR. Your activities definitely helped me visualize how to use it with my students. 6y
DrSpalding SF or F I would accept both. Neat resource but too expensive...$19.95? (edited) 6y

I love this story!! Someone recently used it as a S in class which inspired me to re-read it. This story has been told in many different ways. It is considered to be TL/Folktale. I would use this book as a DR or S. So many cool ways this story can be used in the classroom. Using it as a S would be fun for all the kids and they would really enjoy it. I have read this story by Marcia Brown and Ann McGovern. I would include it in my classroom library

This is a classic RF book. I remember reading this book as a kid. I recently read it to a kindergarten class and they loved it. I used it as a RA but it could also be used as a GR, or S. This book teaches kids about animals and colors. Super fun book for K-1st! Bill Martin Jr. has other books that are very similar to this one. #UCFLAE3414SP18

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a classic modern fantasy book. This book is about a Grinch who decides to ruin Christmas for the citizens of Whoville. This book has been made into a movie several times and was written by no other than Dr. Seuss. The movies have one several awards which include best hair and make up, as well as best costumes. This book is great for Christmas time. One of my favorites from Dr. Seuss!! #UCFLAE3414SP18

Actual size is a nonfiction book written by Steve Jenkins that talks about all sorts of animals and their sizes. It teaches students about measurement and the different animals that surround us. I used this book as my TeachLive book and I loved it!! I think it is a great book to include in your classroom, especially if you‘re learning about measurements. #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro A great UDL strategy to go along with this book would be strategy 2.3 and 2.1. Both strategies clarity symbols, vocabulary, and mathematical notations. It is important that students underpants the terms of measurement while reading this book. A great EL strategy would be 20. This strategy is great because it will allow the students to understand what they are about to read and prepare to identify the vocabulary in the story. 6y
LisaMart @V.DeQuattro Puppy paws!!! I love the incorporation of mathematical concepts with this book. 6y

Where the Sidewalk ends is a Children‘s Poetry book written and illustrated by Shell Silverstein. This book includes short poems and drawings to go along with them. This book is great for CR, or SR. I think kids would love to read this in class because the rhyming and interaction will keep them entertained. This book is also great for teaching students about poetry and how it works. Super cute poems!! #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro I found this great PDF to go along with the book and Shel Silverstein! The attached website is a bunch of poetry activities that coordinate with this book. Super fun and cool activities!!https://prod.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/Shel-Poetry-Month.pdf 6y
V.DeQuattro A great UDL strategy would be 2.2 which clarifies the syntax and structure of a story. This will help students to learn how to break down a poem and understand what is being said. A great EL strategy would be 16. I think it is important to include speaking, reading, writing, and listening activities when it comes to poetry. It can be used in classrooms as a IR, AS, or GR. The book is about a young bunny who struggles to balance her deafness and her childhood. Read to find out how she tries to overcome this. #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro The following website is a great resource for this book. It includes a bunch of ways on how it can be included in the classroom. https://www.abramsbooks.com/pdfs/academic/El_Deafo_TeachingGuide.pdf 6y
V.DeQuattro A great UDL strategy to use for this book would be 3.2. This strategy allows students to understand the critical features in the story and express their ideas and opinions. A great EL strategy would be strategy 30. The use of diagrams and drawings are helpful with this book and will allow students to connect with the book especially since it is a graphic novel. 6y
Laura.S @V.DeQuattro I love that this book reads like a comic book! Jack and the bean stalk is a famous Traditional Literature story. I‘m sure most of us grew up hearing this story being told many times. This book is great to use as a storytelling or read aloud book. There are many awesome activities I found for this book. The following website includes great activities for rhyming, learning beginning sounds, and syllables. https://www.pre-kpages.com/jack/

V.DeQuattro A great UDL strategy for this book would be strategy 3.1. A great EL strategy would be strategy 4 which also links the lesson to students prior knowledge. Also strategy 16 is great for the activities that I attached. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

My favorite!! This realistic fiction book is a great for S or RA. This book is about a boy named Alexander who is having a really bad day. He gets gum stuck in his hair, no dessert for lunch, no prize in his cereal..etc. But he has to overcome those obstacles and realize that every once in awhile everyone has a bad day but it gets better! This book was actually made into a movie and it was super cute! Steve Carell and Jennifer Gardner star in it.

Magic tree house books are amazing modern fantasy books written by Mary Pope Osborne. This book would be great for an AS, or even as an IR. This book is about two siblings who discover a magic tree house! It sends them back in time when dinosaurs were alive. Throughout the book it teaches them about different historical events. And they have to try and find their way home. #UCFLAE3414SP18

V.DeQuattro EL strategy 16 is great for this book and an AS. It allows students to speak, listen, read, and write about the book and the author. A great UDL strategy would be 4.1. Allow various opinions of the book and how students found information on the author. 6y

A wrinkle in time is my LC book for class. The image shown is one of the pictures I drew for LC. This book is an amazing science fiction novel. It won the Newbery award and would be an excellent book for LC in the classroom. This book does concern me with younger and lower level students because it has a lot of content that can easily confuse students. Since this book can get a little confusing, being able to discuss it with your peers is helpful.

V.DeQuattro There is also a movie coming out about this book. am really excited for the movie to come out!! Attached is the trailer for those of you who are interested: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kZ3bYBPlR2g (if you love Oprah then watch!!) #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
V.DeQuattro EL strategy 2 would be great with this book. Allowing students too come together and discuss what they have read. A great UDL to go along with it would be strategy 8.3. It is great for fostering LC. 6y
DrSpalding I love that you included your own image. I agree that the content in this book could be confusing but that makes it perfect for literature circles and group discussions. I do feel the movie will bring the book to life and possibly make it more comprehensible. 6y

I LOVE THIS BOOK. Wonder is a novel written by R.J. Palacio. Wonder is an incredibly inspiring and heartwarming book about a young boy with Treacher Collins syndrome. Auggie has been homeschooled his whole life and that is about to change. The upcoming school year is Auggies fifth grade year. His parents have decided that he his ready to face the real world and go to school with other children. Read about all of the obstacles that 5th grade holds.

V.DeQuattro This book is a #1 New York Times best seller. Wonder is a realistic fiction book that will make you laugh, cry, and smile from ear to ear. I would love to use this as a RA OR LC book. I want to hear what my students reactions are to this book. I believe this book will inspire every kid that reads it. This book was recently made into a movie. The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate

The one and only Ivan is a novel written by Katherine Applegate. This book is a #1 New York Times best seller. This realistic fiction book was inspired by a true story. The one and only Ivan is about a gorilla who lives in a shopping mall. The gorilla is so accustomed to living in a cage that he really has no idea what his real home is like. Until he meets a baby elephant named Ruby. Read to find out how Ruby has an impact on Ivan‘s life.

V.DeQuattro I would prefer to have this booked be used as an IR so that students can really react to the book in their own way. This story is truly incredible. But you can also use this book as a LC, RA, AS and much more. The following link is where you can purchase the book and watch a video of the author talking about the book. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/search-results/?search=1&filters=&text=The%2... 6y
V.DeQuattro The UDL strategy that works well with this book is 7.2. For an IR it is important to the relevance of the book you‘re reading and what it‘s value you. When you read a book it is important that you enjoy it and it makes you wanting to keep reading more. Because of Winn-Dixie was written by Kate DiCamillo and it received the Newbery Honor. This book would work well in LC, IR, as well as AS. Because of Winn-Dixie is about a girl named Opal and her father who were abandoned by her mother. The two move to Florida which leaves Opal in need of new friends. Opal ends up becoming best friends with a dog whom she found inside of Winn-Dixie. With the dogs help Opal meets new people and changes their lives.

V.DeQuattro This realistic fiction book can be used in the classroom to benefit students. Literature circles is a great way to have the students interact with each other and learn and understand the vocabulary that they‘re reading. Another great way this book can be used in the classroom is through an author study. Kate DiCamillo is an outstanding author with many award winning books. The author study can allow students to explore Kate DiCamillo‘s strategies. 6y

DrSpalding I too, have a best friend that is a dog. ❤️🐕This is a popular title for children growing up in Florida, due to the setting. DrSpalding Sidenote: the movie is very funny. After reading this book with my own children, we watched the movie and laughed and cried. Special guest performance, actor… A popular musician. Find out who!!! 6y

This book was written by Molly Bang and it received the Caldecott Honor as well as the Charlotte Zolotow Award. This book would be great for RA or even GR. This realistic fiction book is about a girl named Sophie who gets angry when she has to share her toys with her sister. And when Sophie gets angry she runs to an old Beech tree, climbs it, and let‘s the worlds view comfort her. #UCFLAE3414SP18 http://www.mollybang.com/Pages/sophie_act.html

V.DeQuattro This book corresponds with the UDL 3.2 principle. The book shows the patterns and steps of Sophie‘s anger and how she overcomes it. The main idea of the book is based on Sophie‘s anger. 6y
Laura.S @V.DeQuattro I definitely want this book for my classroom! It sounds like it has so many lessons and values included in the plot. I love how Sophie gets angry and finds a way to calm down. I feel as though many kids need to learn that lesson! 6y
V.DeQuattro Yes! It is a great way to teach K-1 about controlling their emotions and how to express them. @Laura.S 6y

DrSpalding Wonderful post using the author‘s website as your resource. This is so wise. Molly Bang is an award winning author and has many other books of value for use in your classroom. She may be an excellent one to further study for your author study. 6y
V.DeQuattro She is definitely an author I would consider for my author study! @DrSpalding 6y
DrSpalding A good choice and I‘m not sure she‘s currently on my list but we can add her. One of my UCF colleagues knows her personally! 6y
V.DeQuattro That‘s awesome! @DrSpalding 6y
V.DeQuattro A great EL Strategy for this book is 3. Ask the student if they have ever felt anger or upset. Then ask them how did they make things better. Or ask if the way they reacted was right or wrong. 6y
