When Hannah‘s husband Owen disappears, leaving her with her stepdaughter, Bailey, and a cryptic note saying, “Protect her,” Hannah is plunged into the high stakes mystery of husband‘s hidden past. Heavy with suspense and claustrophobic with “who can I trust?” anxiety, Dave has written an engaging thriller with believable protagonists in Hannah and Bailey, who are learning to navigate each other while uncovering the secrets of the past. #BOTM

I am late to the party but I‘m really glad I finally read it. It was very good & kept me interested to see how it would all play out. There were some twists & turns and I think a predictable ending but it was a very good story. I liked it & now I want to watch the show.

New to me author, but I would certainly read her again! This was a good mystery/suspense novel. It wasn't full of sharp turns or major action; however, the pacing and intrigue felt spot on. And the fact that the narrator for this #audiobook had a lovely cadence and was easy to listen to made it an all around solid 4 star reading experience.

This was a fun read. The plot was interesting and the characters complex. The pacing was a bit helter skelter and there was one piece of the story that felt bungled and unrealistic.

This book gripped me immediately. I loved the suspense and trying to solve this mystery right with the characters. The step-mom and step-daughter, I think, was done beautifully. I loved the mom, I loved the way she dealt with everything. But, I absolutely hated the ending. It felt as though the author didn't know where to do with it and just did the first ridiculous thing that popped into her head. Also, there were some clues just tossed aside.4/5

I ended up feeling pretty ambivalent towards my pick for this month's #ReadorDonate challenge. There are a lot of positive reviews for this one, but I found the pacing to be slow and never particularly warmed towards the characters. I never felt a sense of urgency, or like time was running out or that something bad was going to happen. Just... oh, your husband isn't who you thought he was. I guess we should find who he really was. Oh. Awkward. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) The End. I personally didn't care for the sad ending, either, even though it technically worked.

So far, this challenge for me has been read AND donate, but that's working, too 😂

TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - It gets a lot of positive reviews on GR, but it just didn't work for me. Although I may just be in a mood, because I'm noticing a lot of “soft picks“ and “so-so“ reads on my page this month 😂 8mo

SpellboundReader @TheAromaofBooks - Are you doing the #ReadTheUSA as an ongoing challenge or a yearly challenge? I'm curious as I just added a similar post, initially using a different tag. I've been working on my USA challenge for years. Wishing you the best of luck with yours. 🤗 📚 8mo
SpellboundReader @TheAromaofBooks - I think I answered my own question, as I just found the original post by @aperfectmjk from January. Sometimes there are so many different tags on Litsy that it's hard to keep track. 😃😬 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @BeeCurious - I do it every year just because it's a fun and easy thing to track, but wasn't aware of their being an “official“ challenge this time around haha You're right, there are so many different tags and craziness going on around here that it can be hard to keep track!! 8mo
SpellboundReader @TheAromaofBooks Thanks so much for answering and have fun with the challenge. I'll pay more attention to the books you list for the #ReadtheUSA tag. 🙂

A few reviews on Goodreads gave this 1 star. It does start off slow. But as you get through it, as much as you'd want to stop reading. You are still curious as to what happens.

I‘m not sure how to rate this one…

Do you ever feel like maybe you just weren‘t in the right mindset? Or you finished a previous book that was just so different and you still had a hangover from it?

I feel like this was what happened to me while I was reading this one.

I will say, interesting premise. Wished there was more of a focus on the main character‘s marriage relationship. But then again, maybe that was the point…

I was intrigued by the premise of the book (husband disappears under mysterious, possibly criminal circumstances) and I wanted to know how it would turn out but ultimately the plot and the actions of MC Hannah didn‘t make sense to me.

Good read!! Husband/Dad Owen disappears and leaves new stepmom Hannah the singular feat of protecting his daughter, Bailey. A good mystery of life that deals with love, loss, hurt, betrayal, and harbored feelings. Caught myself having to pay extra attention but enjoyed it!!

I was so looking forward to this book and raced through it as I was watching it on Apple TV. Read a few reviews about the ending being far fetched and a swift end to what turned out to be a not very interesting mystery. A shame because it starts off well and seems intriguing.

While it does get slow at times, overall it‘s a decent read. My only frustration is that the “mystery” has a lazy wrap up where instead of bringing it out in pieces, the author just paused mid book and explains it all in 2 pages. Second half definitely better than first half.

It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a truly absorbing suspense novel. This one definitely fit the bill. Great pacing combined with an intriguing story makes for an excellent start to my summer reading. I figured out part of the mystery just before the MC did. But from there, she was way ahead of me. I was rapt until the full story unravelled to its satisfying conclusion. I‘ll definitely seek out more books by this author! 5/5⭐️

I enjoyed the twists & turns, and the character dev. I never understand why people just don‘t cooperate with law-enforcement, when this happens in books/TV it drives me crazy, but then we wouldn‘t have such a captivating story. I‘ve seen many characters make stupid mistakes, but Hannah did such a fantastic job for her family. The last line in the book might have been my favorite & it sealed the deal for how much I truly liked this one.Book#38in2023

This book is a big page-turner and I wanted to know what happened, but I didn‘t love the writing style. Then the climax felt like it happened faster than it needed to with an information dump, and that felt very unrealistic. Did not love the ending.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever finished a bookspin book this early in the month! Hannah‘s husband disappears and she has a mystery to unravel. I turned the pages quickly because I really wanted to know what happened next. I enjoyed it for what it was but it‘s not a compelling story that will stick with me.

3½ ✨

Fast paced and engaging with a very interesting premise.
Even if it does seem a bit too unrealistic at certain points.
The fact that Hannah seems to know exactly what everyone thought and felt worked a bit on my nerves, but I could look past that and focus on the story.

I liked the gradual revealing of who Owen really was. Kept me wondering throughout. I didn‘t mind the non-conventional ending, but the whole last portion of the book felt kind of weak, like it could‘ve been MORE. But still eager to see it on screen.
