Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories
Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories | Roald Dahl
Fourteen terrifying ghost stories chosen by the master of the macabre, Roald Dahl. 'Spookiness is the real purpose of the ghost story. It should give you the creeps and disturb your thoughts . . .' Who better to choose the ultimate in spine-chillers than Roald Dahl, whose own sinister stories have teased and twisted the imagination of millions? Here are fourteen of his favourite ghost stories, including Sheridan Le Fanu's The Ghost of a Hand, Edith Wharton's Afterward, Cynthia Asquith's The Corner Shop and Mary Treadgold's The Telephone. Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. These delightfully disturbing tales have often been filmed and were most recently the inspiration for the West End play, Roald Dahl's Twisted Tales by Jeremy Dyson. Roald Dahl's stories continue to make readers shiver today.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ • Like any short story collection, some hits and misses. Note that this is a collection curated by Dahl, not written by him. The into he writes is great and points out that he feels that women make better ghost story writers.

This was my #bookspin for February @TheAromaofBooks
I've read it a while ago. I initially bought this book because I thought these were stories written by Roald Dahl himself, so that was a bit of a dissappointment. Some stories I enjoyed. Some were okay. I gave it two stars on Goodreads.
249 pages.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 1y

'- the idea of eternity is tiring; you feel that you want to stop. But that's because you are thinking of eternity in terms of Time, and mumbling in your brain, "And after that, and after that?" Don't you grasp the idea that in eternity there isn't any "after", any more than there is any "before"? It's all one. Eternity isn't a quantity: it's a quality.'

Of course, I want to hear ghost stories sitting around a campfire. The tagged has a good selection.

BookmarkTavern Dahl wrote a collection of short stories?! Awesome! Thanks for posting! 2y
wanderinglynn @ozma.of.oz it‘s a collection chosen by him. Apparently, he read 749 supernatural tales from an array of writers at the British Museum before choosing 14 that he considered the best. (edited) 2y
BookmarkTavern Equally cool! I will definitely have to look for a copy! 2y

A fabulous collection of Roald Dahl‘s favourite ghost stories, with a great foreword by him. The two stories of imaginary friends gave me the most chills; my daughter had an imaginary friend when she was three, she told us he couldn‘t come with us when we moved house! Thank you @Emilymdxn for another hit.

LeahBergen Your daughter‘s imaginary friend!!! 😬😬😮😮 4y
veritysalter @LeahBergen I know, it really spooked me for ages, we‘d completely dismissed it as a normal childhood thing until she said that, fortunately it was after we‘d left that house. 4y
LeahBergen Was it an old house that you left? 😬😬 4y
veritysalter @LeahBergen A late Victorian terrace, the house I‘m in now is over 400 years in parts, but it just feels homely. Evie can‘t remember it at all now (she‘s 16). I still don‘t know what to make of it. (edited) 4y

1. I‘m normally not big on milk chocolate BUT I do like fun size candy bars like Snickers, Twix and Butterfinger.
2. Oh man, both!
3. Shot glasses from travels and Funko Pops.
4. Sanderson sisters, Oogie Boogie, Pennywise. I‘m big into ghost stories too. Oh and scariest monster villains ever are the Skeksis from Dark Crystal and The Gentlemen from Buffy.

KatieDid927 @bullbunny Lotsa Disney ones, a few Harry Potter, Buffy and Rick & Morty plus some randos like Dorothy from Golden Girls, Dean from Supernatural, etc. I have a villains shelf that I love. Some I've been wanting for it are the B&W Norman Bates variant, the new Madame Leota from Haunted Mansion, Ursula and Yzma. I've had my eye on the Rupert Giles pop too. I also don't have any Hocus Pocus or Nightmare Before Xmas ones yet! 5y

My last pick for #spooktober was perfect. This isn‘t a book of ghost stories written by Dahl, but rather a collection of the best ghost stories by others that he edited. His intro explains that when developing a show that never came to fruition he read basically every ghost story ever. This is the compilation of the best ones, and they‘re pretty great. Highly recommend.

Book of collected short ghost stories with a slightly misogynistic introduction by Dahl. Women write good ghost stories and children‘s books, not so much other kinds of books. Most of the stories were written quite awhile ago, and there are a couple that dragged a bit, but generally pretty good.

I'm probably not the best person to judge this book as I'm not keen on short stories! I find them superficial and kinda pointless; I read to get lost in a story, short stories don't give you enough time! Reminds me of speed dating!!!

TrishB I don't do short stories either! Although I have read Stephen Kings!! 7y
JacqMac I‘m not a fan either. Speed dating is a great way to describe them. Unfulfilling. 7y
Caroline2 @TrishB oh totally agree, Stephen King short stories are defo the exception!! 😆 7y
Caroline2 @JacqMac yes!! Unfulfilling is the perfect way to describe them! 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled The only short stories Ive ever liked are Ray Bradbury‘s. They‘re actually stories, not excerpts (as I find most short stories to be!) 7y
