In the Dream House
In the Dream House: A Memoir | Carmen Maria Machado
A revolutionary memoir about domestic abuse by the award-winning author of Her Body and Other Parties. In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural represetations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it's that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope--haunted houses, erotica, bildungsroman--in which Machado holds the events up to the light and examines them from different angles. She looks back at her religious adolescence, unpacks the stereotype of lesbian relationships as safe and utopian, and widens the view with essayistic explorations about the history and reality of abuse in queer relationships. Machado's dire narrative is leavened with her characteristic wit, playfulness, and openness to inquiry. She casts a critical eye over legal proceedings, Star Trek and Disney villains, fairy tales, as well as iconic works of film and fiction. The result is a wrenching, riveting book that explodes our ideas about what a memoir can do and be.

WOW YES In the Dream House is everything people tell you will be an more. Experimental in form, this memoir is part theoretical analysis, part literary reference, part deeply personal narrative of a traumatically abusive relationship. It is a critical contribution to literature and discussion of abusive relationships, including in queer contexts. I also found deeply engaging, the interrogation of the question; who gets to tell stories and why?

This, maybe, was the worst part: the whole world was out to kill you both. Your bodies have always been abject. You were dropped from the boat of the world, climbed onto a piece of driftwood together, and after a perfunctory period of pleasure and safety, she tried to drown you. And so you aren‘t just mad, or heartbroken: you grieve from the betrayal.

This powerful memoir relates Machado‘s experience in an abusive queer relationship. It‘s painful to read in places but a great book. She uses a unique structure with each passage, playing with literary devices. I thought it was terrific.

Compelling, evocative, reflective. This #memoir was difficult at times to listen as the abuse suffered by Machado was recounted. "Dreamy" is definitely the way to describe the style, just as the title suggests. I loved it and will be reading her short story collection "Her Body and Other Parties"

Five Stars. The most inventive memoir I‘ve read. The only one that comes close is Sherman Alexie‘s You Don‘t Have to Say you Love Me. Machado tells her story of an abusive relationship through a series of vignettes and fragments taken from her own life, pop culture,
Poetry and queer history. My 2020 reading year is off to a great start.

With In the Dream House, her new memoir of an abusive same-sex relationship, Carmen Maria Machado continues to blow up the concept of genre. As in Her Body and Other Parties, Machado weaves and winds, distorts and subverts genre, tropes, convention, and expectations, knowing that as Emily Dickinson wrote “Tell all the truth but tell it slant,” or as I think of Machado‘s writing, it‘s only through the fun house mirror that you can get a clear view.

TW for domestic violence, emotional manipulation, physical threats, inability to escape.

Carmen Maria Machado writes in a creative way about her own experience in an abusive relationship, and also within the broader context of lesbian and/or queer domestic abuse. All the pieces of her life, experiences, and relationships create this Dream House that also in some ways creates a structure that surrounds the experience. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy Some of the sections are just one page, exploring a fragment of an idea that connects; she eventually explains why the book is written this way.⤵️ 1mo
ReadingEnvy Many of the sections connect to the Motif-Index of Folk Literature put out by Indiana University, which was uncanny to me because in my year in their Folklore PhD program, this is something we used often and comes from their scholarship. Her girlfriend from this violent time also lived in Bloomington and was doing a writing program there. ⤵️ 1mo
ReadingEnvy If you know Machado's previous works, which were dark fairy tales and dark folktale retellings, it is an unnerving connection to the life experience she was having while she wrote those stories, something she connects inside this memoir in the struggle to understand how in some ways this violent relationship fueled her writing but of course she couldn't say so at the time.⤵️ 1mo
See All 7 Comments
ReadingEnvy I couldn't read this all at once. It creates a feeling of claustrophobia. Her use of the occasional second person pulls the reader into the lived experience and I actually felt a little panicky at times (particularly in the Choose Your Own Adventure section.) ⤵️ 1mo
ReadingEnvy I'm glad she was able to write about it, it's important for people in the lgbtq+ community to have resources if they encounter abusive relationships, and it points to the importance of understanding domestic violence beyond visible bruising and the old "battered woman" stereotypes. 1mo
Reggie I really appreciated the chapter on queer villainy. And the other one that had me go down the rabbit hole of watching Voices Carry on Youtube, lol. 4w
ReadingEnvy @Reggie ha! I listened to that again this morning! 4w

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my most anticipated new release of 2019, and now it‘s made my top books of the year. 🙌🏽 I loved it. Machado‘s writing is excellent, as expected, and the experimental aspects add to the layers of her story rather than detract from it. Also, the choose your own adventure chapter was brilliant. I would highly recommend this.

Just finished up Carmen Maria Machado‘s IN THE DREAM HOUSE. I don‘t really know where to start with this one. On the one hand it‘s an incredibly personal account of domestic violence in a lesbian relationship and on the other it‘s an explosion of genre and folktale tropes. A really fascinating piece that I fully recommend!

I was very taken by this experimental memoir that covers a period of domestic violence against Carmen by her girlfriend. The chapters are short but are very meaningful to the form mentioned in the title. Also, there are these footnotes that pertain to certain tropes that let us know these parts of her story aren‘t new but seen through her lens feel very fresh. I read and loved her short stories, and if this is what her nonfiction looks like, I👇🏼

November recap—33 books & comics. Favs: In the Dream House was hands down my favorite—powerful, lyrical, & really all the things. Machado is fast becoming an automatic buy for me. Loved Rogue Protocol & Murderbot! An Unkindness of Ghosts was very good once I got into it. The Toll was a fitting, very good conclusion to the Arc of the Scythe trilogy, I liked Our Dark Duet even better than the first book & Monstress just gets better & better.

Part memoir, part exploration of cultural queer representation, and it also asks important questions about who gets to tell a story and how. Machado, as would be expected if you have read her fiction, does all of this with imaginative style. Writing from two perspectives; first person for herself now, then second person for the painful past, she uses different styles and language for different chapter heading and somehow makes it all feel natural.

This memoir about emotional and psychological domestic abuse was written in such a unique and compelling way. The author explores the myths and the cultural beliefs that abuse doesn‘t happen in lesbian relationships. The memoir is told through multiple vignettes centered around the time her girlfriend lived in a particular house while enrolled in an MFA program. The unique structure bolstered the powerful and impactful writing. 5⭐️
