Welcome to Dead House
Welcome to Dead House | R. L. Stine
11-year-old Josh and 12-year-old Amanda just moved into the oldest and weirdest house on the block - the two siblings think it might even be haunted. But of course, their parents don't believe them. 'You'll get used to it,' they say. 'Go out and make some new friends.' But the creepy kids are not like anyone Josh and Amanda have ever met before. And when they take a shortcut through the cemetery one night Josh and Amanda learn why.

These are random picks from my bookshelf. Some are from my youth, and some are newer because I'm always adding on to my collection when I can.

I could not believe and was sad that Goosebumps books would be on the ban list!

It was stories like these that compelled me to read books when I was a kid. Author's like Avi, Christopher Pike, Cate Tiernan, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, Garth Nix...and yes, R.L. Stine.

👇

AnnCrystal While I don\\\'t mind a content warning on a book, to outright ban is too extreme and unacceptable!

Without these books I would have never began my book journey, which led me to the understanding that I too can become a storyteller and see my own work in print.

The power of ink infused pages released into the world 🪄✍️💼📄🌬️📃💫📚🙏💝.

KadaGul I was so hyped about reading every single Goosebumps book as soon as it dropped. I was always eagerly waiting for the next one to come out. I had no idea it was banned at the time. I guess I was living on the edge back in grade school. (edited) 2mo

3✨ If I would have read this one as a kid I would have had major paranoia! Creepy house that they are seeing things in it. Then when they make friends that have something in common that seems a little weird. Very quick read, but predictable. #DogsofLitsy even Tess looks creeped out! Well, she probably heard what happened to the dog. 🫢

Finished this yesterday. I had to re-listen to parts of it because I was so exhausted after my COVID vaccination (in the past, they had knocked me down for about 24 hours, so I expected this).

I didn't read a lot of R.L. Stine because when it came out, I was already pre-teen, so I moved onto SK (as Gen X peeps do).

#ChildhoodFavorite

KateReadsYA I remember when I got my vaccine and my body hurt sooo bad. Like my back felt like it was full of knots. Hope you feel better soon. 10mo
ElizaMarie @KateReadsYA So day one, I was just exhausted, like I couldn't lift my head. Day 2 I felt sick, like body aches, fever, chills. Ugh! I mean.. this happened with all the others - but - I did fill its important to keep getting them.

Feel much better today (Day 3) - I think I am past it.

KateReadsYA @ElizaMarie It's a tough one to get through. Glad you are feeling better. 10mo

Today I had the privilege of meeting RL Stine and listening to him speak about his craft!! I still can't believe it! He is HILARIOUS!!! Such a treat to listen to him speak.

I also got the chance to listen to Kendare Blake and Dana Swift, as well as many other authors speak about writing. I learned so much valuable information today and had such a great time doing it! Authors really are the nicest people. :-)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So #overduepod is reading Goosebumps as their next longreads project #90snostalgia This book really highlights the selfishness of parents and how that can be extremely dangerous and unhealthy for their children. Also gaslighting. A lot of gaslighting going on in this one. Reading this one reminded me how great R.L. Stine is!

This one was a bit of lag in the first chapters but it was a cool little exciting read in the end and actually really creepy for a children's horror novel.

Overall, I'm glad I decided to give the Goosebumps series a try.

This one was actually pretty good. I love how RL Stine ends his books, like you don‘t actually know what happened.

MAJOR SCORE! 🎉🎉🎉 Look at all the treasures I found in the donation bin today at work! 💕📚💕 I'm especially looking forward to rereading the Goosebumps books, I was obsessed with Goosebumps when I was in middle school! I'll probably start them in October! After that I'll most likely pass them on to my niece - she loves spooky books! 😁 #bookhaul

Cute and seasonally appropriate. I bought it for my daughter, a budding daughter, as an example of a creepy kid‘s story. But I couldn‘t resist seeing what all the hype was about. Over all, it was pretty decent. Not too scary, but with just enough suspense to make it exciting. I think she will like it.

Here‘s what I know about her: her name‘s Gretta; she‘s super-nice; she wore clunky black shoes & striped socks today, which made her look like a hip witch (obviously a good thing in my book).

#1 "It will just kill you."
The old house that Amanda and Josh just moved into with their parents is not haunted... Or is it? Things get crazy in this ghostly tale of the ominous haunted house.
As the first book in the series of the Goosebumps franchise, while not my favorite, I'd have to say it's still one of the great ones.

For Episode 11 of my podcast (out today!), I reversed my former scaredy cat ways and finally read a book from the Goosebumps series! Sarah Slusher, founder of the Really Into This pop culture blog, joins me to chat about helicopter parents, reading purely for entertainment, and how scary is *too* scary. Check out the link in my bio or search The SSR Podcast on iTunes/Stitcher/Google Play! 👻

Plot: 4/5. A good old-fashioned American family moves to a new home mysteriously inherited—oh, and the whole town is trying to kill you.

Characters: 4/5. The brother/sister duo in this book are believable in their sibling rivalry.

Style: 3.5/5. The writing was to-the-point and simple, but it's also a book that will increase a kid‘s (or an adult‘s!) vocabulary.

Originality: 4/5. A nice modern spin on a spooky archetype.

Overall: 3.5/5.

The Goosebumps series started in 1992 when I was in 5th grade. I was obsessed with these books and eventually moved on to Fear Street in junior high.

I was into creepy/thrilling/strange stories before Goosebumps, but reading this series is what actually made me aware of it. Both of Stine's series helped me identify what I enjoy as a reader.

I was in elementary school when this series started, and I remember my parents buying this debut installment for me from #TheScholasticBookClub. God, I loved that when I was a kid. This book resonated with me because we had moved several times when I was a kid, and there's the natural fears and awkwardness associated with a new town & new friends to make. Best book to start your kids with in this series! #PairWith: Bug Juice Spider Juice, chilled.
